Analyzing the AP's Pulitzer-winning photos

This year, the prize went to the Associated Press staff for, as the Pulitzer organization's site says, "its stunning series of photographs of bloody yearlong combat inside Iraqi cities."

I looked at the twenty photographs and broke them into groups on the basis of content. Here are my results:

• U.S. troops injured, dead, or mourning: 3 (2, 3, 11)

• Iraqi civillians harmed by the war: 7 (4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 18)

• Insurgents looking determined or deadly: 3 (6, 15, 20)

• US troops looking overwhelmed or uncertain: 3 (7, 12, 14)

• US troops controlling Iraqi prisoners: 2 (16, 17)

• Iraqis celebrating attacks on US forces: 2 (1, 19)

Equally telling is what the photos don't show:

• US forces looking heroic: 0

• US forces helping Iraqi civillians: 0

• Iraqis expressing support for US forces: 0

• Iraqis expressing opposition to insurgents: 0

Not only do the twenty photos consistently portray the American invasion and occupation of Iraq as an unmitigated disaster, but, as Michelle Malkin notes, at least one of them (number 20, depicting the insurgents' shocking execution of Iraqi election workers) has been exposed (by Powerline, Belmont Club, and others) as the result of at least some degree of coordination between the AP photographer and the insurgents themselves.

There hasn't been as disgraceful a Pulitzer Prize since NYT newsman Walter Duranty picked one up for sweeping Stalin's mass famines under the rug back in 1932. Shame on the Associated Press for its biased photojournalism, and shame on the Pulitzer Prize Board for "honoring" it.

This one is great.

It reminds me of some of these threads:

I would never accuse AP of showing bias, so I shall simply list the 20 award-winners. See if you can spot a pattern:

1. Bodies of contractors hanging from bridge.
2. Dead U.S. soldier.
3. Dead U.S. soldier.
4. Kid killed by U.S. soldiers.
5. Kid killed at car bombing.
6. Shi'ite terrorist with a dove on his shoulder
7. U.S. soldier on ground holding up dummy head to draw fire.
8. Woman at Abu Ghraib.
9. Rescued man at car bombing.
10. Mourners after a car bombing.
11. Dead U.S. Marine being prayed over.
12. GI Joe doll in backpack of U.S. soldier.
13. Displaced Iraqi children at Fallujah.
14. U.S. soldiers taking cover (on their faces).
15. Iraqi terrorists firing a mortar and machine gun at U.S. soldiers.
16. Marine forcing tied-up prisoner forward, head down.
17. Solitary confinement cage at (where else?) Abu Ghraib.
18. Youth running through car-bomb scene.
19. Iraqi man celebrating on top of burning U.S. Humvee.
20. Assassin shooting election worker in street.

Anybody else find this disgusting?

He should have used a journalist. They wouldn't even have to change the caption.

I do. Bush should throw the AP out of the White House.

Sickening Anti-US human trash. They should go work for Al-Jahzzera.

Denying the problems our troops are facing is very very Anti-US. My friend's cousin served bravely in Iraq and he came home in a wooden box with his left leg and most of his organs missing. He was ripped apart by shrapnel from a motorcade bombing. Am I Anti-American for witnessing his corpse?

Furthermore Dissent is an American Value- see Amendment 1 of the Bill of Rights!

Also:

"All Experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed." -The Declaration of Independence

Do you think that all copies of those should be thrown out of the White House?

Despite the good intentions of our nation's Administration, we must adress any flaws in its strategy or legislation. To deny them of advice would be negligence and treason of the highest order!!!!!

If any are inclined to call me a liar than I sincerely hope that they aren't expending all their time and effort on a cause that they don't really care about!!

Do you care or are you afraid to disagree?

7 is interesting. The Zaitsev technique, using dummies to lure out snipers.

12 is cool. I like toys!

16 is hands down the best. I call it "Butt Whompin'."

The rest of it is BS. I especially love number 6. "Ooh, it's the freedom fighters and the sympol of peas!" Barf. That's one stupid bird. Most animals know better and avoid murderers and scumbags. I'd shoot the terrorist sh!thead and the bird in one shot. Two idiots for the price of one.

Pulitzer must be rolling in his grave generating a magnitude 5 earthquake. Since when do propagandists of communism and terror win such prestigious awards. Liberals and their opposite Midas touch strike agian, rendering a great award into a meaningless scrap of metal and perverting the intentions of their founders entirely.

Big controversy on one of the award winning photos.

Do you mean the staged shooting the terrorist photographer took part in then sold to the AP?

Yes, that is the pic I was referring to way at the top of this thread. Thanks very much for posting it.

Some program on TV picked up this story last night, but I only caught the last couple seconds and didn't get to see the photo. It may have been BO'R or H & C.

Since you sound either drunk or nuts, put me in the do not care column.

I said at the time that they would have lost all credibility for not giving that one a Pulitzer--if they'd had any to begin with.
