he will never be our POTUS
Personal life. Bad problem, for a Republican.

Would be a resume enhancement for a liberal, but for a Republican . . .

I agree.
Reagan set the bar higher than what it previously was and we should abide by it.

Reagan was twice-married and that didn't preclude him from leading the Right.
One thing to say that Reagan was divorced and remarried, and another to say that what he did was sinful. By all accounts Jane Wyman divorced him.
On a personal note, Miss Wyman has been married several times: Myron Futterman - married June 29, 1937; divorced November 1, 1938, Ronald Reagan - married January 26, 1940; divorced June 28, 1948, and Fred Karger twice - married November 1, 1952; divorced December 7, 1954 - remarried March 11, 1961; divorced March 9, 1965. She had a daughter, Maureen Reagan, born January 4, 1941; died of malignant melanoma August 8, 2001. She has a son, Michael Reagan, born March 18, 1945; adopted by Jane Wyman and Ronald Reagan on March 21, 1945. A daughter, Christine Reagan, was born prematurely on June 26, 1947 and passed away nine hours later. Her Best Actress Oscar for Johnny Belinda makes her the only wife of a future U.S. president ever to win such an award. Jane Wyman
If Wyman initiated the divorce of Mr. Reagan, that does not condem him but her. OTOH Wyman's first marriage, to Myron Futterman, would in Christian principle still have been binding on Ms. Wyman if it was not Mr. Futterman but Ms. Wayman who initiated it. If Wyman initiated both her first and second divorces, it can be argued from scripture that Reagan's marriage to Ms. Wyman was adulterous and the one to Nancy Davis was not.

If Wyman's first divorce was initiated by her husband and if (as I understand it) she herself initiated the second one, Reagan was just a victim of the second divorce rather than being a perpetrator. And if Wyman did initiate the first divorce, you might say that Reagan sinned by marrying her - and paid dearly for it when Wyman did it to him, too.

I've claimed neither the Gipper or Gingrich was sinning in their personal lives, my FRiend...that said, I'm not saying Gingrich's personal life won't be a consideration when we go about selecting a Presidential nominee, I just don't think it automatically disqualifies Gingrich.

Newt is one of the most profound thinkers in America today. He would make an excellent president because he knows how to win the political arguments and can teach others.

Unfortunately, the left-wing and MSM have tainted him and conservatives are wary of taking a chance despite Newt's stunning success in winning back the House after 40 years with ideas and actions embodied in the Contract With America.

Newt is also brutally honest--on welfare reform, the State Department, Social Security, Medicare, etc., and is almost always right as history has shown.

That means recognizing that Newt would be most effective serving as a member of a president's brain trust providing astute advice and valuable direction on a range of issues confronting this nation.

"A Conservative Plan for Victory"

The man for all seasons when writing TO RENEW AMERICA wrote "Balancing the budget is the right thing to do for America". But then again the book was dedicated to Marianne, his wife, so maybe all things pass.

"...recognizing that Newt would be most effective serving as a member of a president's brain trust providing astute advice and valuable direction on a range of issues confronting this nation."

No argument here...still, Newt's got an ego, and that trait has been known to propel folks to run fer the American Presidency in the past...MUD

I agree Newt has an ego, though much of that is simply his persona and some unflattering pictures circulated by the MSM.

Those who are uncomfortable with his high intellect claim (falsely, IMHO) he's arrogant. However, there are few leaders like him in America who are willing to engage people and share credit and recognition.

Though he has an eye for the ironic, he might do well to develop a more of a sense of humor that would win over more adherents.

Until he is able to generate mass appeal, he is not likely to overcome his past pariah image that Democrats turned against Republicans so effectively in 1996.

Then Ronald Reagan came along. A reporter said to Reagan, “What’s your vision of the Cold War?” Reagan said just four words: “We win, they lose.” Everybody in Washington understood that was goofy. First of all, “we win” is a hostile term, implying one side would do better. “They lose” was crowding them into a corner. How could you expect a dictatorship with nuclear weapons to treat you, if you say they’re going to lose? People like Strobe Talbott were on the edge of heart attacks for four years.

For the life of me I don't understand (There's that phrase again :-)) why this was "controversial". I always assumed we were going to win. Why because we were the good guys, ok naive I know, but that's what I thought.

I agree Newt has an ego,

Nothing wrong with that. You need an ego, and a large one to think you have "The Answer" and are willing to put your ideas out there for everyone to see.
Anyone who thinks a politican (any politican) doesn't have a well developed ego, I got a bridge I can let them have real cheap.

I agree with that. Ego can well be the driving force, along with a profound sense of history in Newt's case, that provides the motivation to persist.

Gingrich, you may recall, was found to have used his excellent nonpartisan video series for party-building and was levied a fine of $300,000. The special investigator was Jim Cole, roommate to the highly partisan and politically ambitious Eric Holden, Clinton's deputy attorney general.

(Compare and contrast that to Sandy Berger's penalties for stealing and destroying national security documents and lying about what he did, while continuing to refuse to disclose his reasons -- to the detriment of the findings and credibility of the 9/11 Commission investigation.)

Unfortunately for Newt, House freshmen such as David McIntosh, Steve Largent and Susan Molinari among others lacked the backbone to stand-up for Newt, thus allowing Dems and the MSM to demonize him.

The Big Question: Will conservatives again lack the spine to support Tom DeLay? The New York Times hopes so, if you can believe Maureen Dowd's column today.

Wow.... this should be posted every morning for the next month.

.....whether you are flowing with the natural stream of history.....

This is the reason I like Newt, he takes the long view and sees today as a part of the continuing process.

I'm sending this to my representative Bill Jenkins and to Senators Alexander and Frist with instructions to make copies and put them where they will be ready reference.

Newt has pointed the way as previously pointed by Reagen and Thatcher, we must take up and follow the course.

Oh yes, regarding the people acting, there is a host of FReepers this day in Washington doing a job...... showing the way. It is not just enough to say "good job guys", we must each make an effort..... spend some time and some money. We will prevail.
