The 'women like bad boys or jerks' is a strawman - it's mostly repeated by men who consistently don't do well in attracting women and sexually exciting them.

It's used primarily to give nice, lonely men the moral high ground - despite their inadequacy, they can be assured they are deep down a better quality of man.

Smart guy as Book smart or street smart?
If they are book smart, it seems to me to make alot of sense that they are not interested in women. They are home reading, studying and watching the history channgel all the time...and not interested in working at keeping up conversation with a woman. I can see that.
If they are street smart, it's because they have too big an ego and want the perfect woman.....which of course doesn't exist.

Don't oversimplify it - a lot of very men who are unsuccessful with women who have overdone the 'let her talk' advice and have just been percieved as girlfriends with a penis - nonthreatening sounding boards that seldom if ever get rewarded with sexual affection.
