Columbia) April 5, 2005 - The main post office on Assembly Street will not have extended hours on tax day, April 15th. The post office will also not have a midnight drive-thru service.
It will be open regular hours, 7:30am to 6:00pm. The last pick-up from the boxes at the main office will be at 6:45pm. If people miss that deadline the last drop-off in the Midlands will be at the airport location, 2001 Dixiana Road, at 8:00pm.
The IRS says more than 50 percent of taxpayers are e-filing. In turn the post office says theres no need to stay open late. The post office also says that in recent years the late night turnout to beat the tax deadline has been sparse.
I think it is amazing to see the Post Office acting like a real business for once. If the service is no longer needed, then don't provide it. The cost savings on payroll alone are probably pretty significant.
I would also like to add for those who forgot that float time on a check has been reduced to almost nothing by a new law enacted near the end of last year.
