"Breathtaking" Poll Sees Defeat for Canada Liberals

Canada's minority Liberal government is heading for defeat at the hands of the Conservatives after more than 11 years in power, a dramatic new poll is predicting.

The EKOS poll, commissioned by the Toronto Star, was taken after an advertising executive raised the stakes in a scandal about misuse of government cash by testifying he had paid large kickbacks to the Liberals in French-speaking Quebec.

The poll published on Monday showed support for the Conservatives rose seven points to 36.2 percent while the Liberals fell by nine points to just 25 percent.

But both parties played down the chances of a snap election, saying they felt Canadians wanted to hear more information from a public inquiry into the scandal.

It was the lowest showing for the Liberals since they took office in 1993. Public support for the party dipped as low as 29 percent before last June's election, but the party recovered to poll 36.7 percent on election day.

The Toronto Star said the figures suggested a late June election, and EKOS predicted that Conservative leader Stephen Harper would win a minority government.

"There is little immediately apparent in the political environment ... to suggest a way back for the Liberals," the paper quoted EKOS pollster Frank Graves as saying. He said the poll pointed to "a breathtaking shift in what had been a stagnant and listless political landscape".

Prime Minister Paul Martin sought to distance himself from the scandal, which occurred under his predecessor, Jean Chretien. "I was personally offended by what I heard ... this is not the way I would do politics," he told reporters.

Can the Conservatives provoke an election with a vote of no confidence, or is the power considered to be in Martin's hands, even though the Liberal government is a minority? Will the BQ opt for a new election too? They did extraordinarily well last time, I don't see if they have much more to gain.

Old school political thought in Canada is to do exactly the opposite what the United States would do or does. It's endemic to the point of being used as a means of political attacks i.e. "my opponent wants to do it the US way..." is considered the kiss of death.

Canadian parliamentary system runs based on minority goverment so the party with the most seats gets to control the ministries of government (rather than requiring coalition government to get a majority). That said, it is hard to get your bills passed while in the minority.

Canadian House of Commons Current Party Membership
Bloc Québécois Party 18%
Conservative Party 32%
Independent 1%
Liberal Party 43%
New Democratic Party 6%

Conservatives have to make a plan to break the corrupt stranglehold on the INSTITUTIONS of Canada.

Make a plan so this can never happen again.

Any party can introduce a vote of no confidence. BQ could make even more gains, given what the same poll shows in Quebec:
BQ 50%
Conservative 17.5%
Liberal 15%
(Last election: BQ 49%, Lib 33%, Con 9%)

I won't believe it until I see it. However, I will continue to remain optimistic that the good people of Canada will come to their senses and realize the damage a decade of hard socialism has brought to their country.

A conservative Canada can only help our efforts here in the United States.

Oh, I hope this ain't so.

If Canada goes conservative, then that means all those Hollywood liberals who said they were leaving for Canada since Pres. Bush won, will stay here in the States.

What a depressing thought...and I was having a good day!

Wow, FNC has only been in Canada a short time and already the libs are crumbling. No no wonder they fought so hard to keep it out.

Not sure my above opinion has a shread of fact but it sounds good in my twisted little brain.

I just saw the poll at www.thestar.com
Funny how every demographic has support for the Liberals down except the $100,000+ income earners........
I guess all the high income folks who are conservative already left for the US.

There are several things that have given us strength

FReepers helped GWB win the election.

Bloggers uncovered Dan Blather

The Captain's Quarters web site made Brault's testimony available to Canadians

We are on a roll...

I can see the MSM headlines tomorrow . . . .

"DeLay may have possibly been at the bottom of the leak that sank the liberal boat in Canada. Liberals say the "Hammer" used questionable tactics in having suspicious sources reveal supposed information about liberal government bribery accusations. Sensitive Liberal leader Martin is hurt by the harsh tactics."

Don't get too depressed or elated.

A Conservative government in Canada would, at least initially, be ideologically pretty much like a RINO one in relative U.S. terms.

Left-wing Hollywood hypocrites will stay where they already are - where the money is. However, if it cheers you up any, I doubt if any of the American draft dodgers and military deserters we've been stuck with for the past more than three decades will be going anywhere either.

Fellow Canadian Conservatives. I never would have believed the Liberals would implode so quickly. Our time is at hand to take back the country!!!

They could always head overseas...

That analysis seems correct, although names like Myron Thompson and Cheryl Gallant would want to drive the party rightward (especially if they get into cabinet)

To be fair and to encourage a swing to the right, for the first two socially conservative Liberals who cross the Floor, Harper should re-pay Martin by sending him Peter MacKay and gal-pal Belinda.

BTW, if Cheryl - in particular - had all that much drag in the area of policies, we'd likely still have a pro-life plank in our national platform.
