My Norton is driving me nuts
April 14, 2005 | pbrown

I've had to uninstall and then reinstall my Norton Internet Security 2004, a total of four times in the last two weeks. I am at my wits end, which for me, isn't too far a journey. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have any idea what I'm doing when it comes to computers. I dig and poke around hoping I don't do more damage than is already done. My live update is running in the background...again. It seems to always be running. Explaining in as few syllables as possible would be a tremendous help.

A scottsman walks into a bar with a steering wheel hanging out of his fly.

The bartender says "Hey, you have a steering wheel in your fly."

The scottsman says "Aye, it's drivin me nuts."

I did OK with Norton Internet Security 2003. But when I upgraded to a newer version, it seriously hosed my machine, and would not let me uninstall it. I lost Internet connectivity completely.

Norton's advice line told me to log into their web page and download a fix. Idiots.

There is no doubt: Norton sucks.
But there is a solution: Buy another product.

AVG is free and great. Norton's best feature is the uninstall function.

If you downloaded & installed Windows XP SP 2, there are some known conflicts with Norton & ZoneAlarm.

Have you by any chance downloaded the Microsoft Service pack 2? If you have that is probably your problem. It is not compatible with Norton's Firewall.

I do not use Norton Internet Security 2004. I do use Norton Anti-Virus 2004 plus a personal firewall.

What causes you to uninstall and reinstall NIS?
What operating system are you using?

I just bought and installed the 2005 version of Norton Systemworks.
I won't be buying 2006 Systemworks.

Dump Nortons(Hasn't been worth 2 cents since Norton sold the company). Grab another anti-viral package like Mcafee or others. Make sure you uninstall Norton Anti-Virus and the Live Update before you install any other packages.

Here's my personal experience. First of all are you trying to install an older version of Norton with a newer version of Windows ..?? When I changed over to XP - I had to buy a 2004 version of Norton.

Also .. Whenever I delete or add any software - I always run defrag. I've found it makes the transition to new software much easier and less problematic. After I delete the software - I run defrag - then after I reinstall the software - I run defrag.

A scottsman walks into a bar with a steering wheel hanging out of his fly.

A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel attached to his crotch.

The bartender says, "Do you know you have a steering wheel attached to your crotch?"

The pirate replies, "ARRRRRRRR... She's drivin me nuts!"

If you're going to say it, say it right. :)

Norton is horrid! Macafee is a bit better but not by much. AVG is free and is very good. Another good one is called System Suite by V-Com. Its a all in one like norton that runs great and is only $40 bucks. Comes with Anti-virus, Firewall and a bunch of other stuff. Works fantastic!

How is AVG free? I notice my Norton constantly falls off auto mode so that it does not scan or update automatically, I have to do manual scans and updates.

When it expires I will go to something else.

What is incompatible is running both the MS and Norton FW's at the same time.

Regards, RW9 - Currently running Norton Systemworks Pro 2004 and SP2.
