My Norton is driving me nuts

I've had to uninstall and then reinstall my Norton Internet Security 2004, a total of four times in the last two weeks. I am at my wits end, which for me, isn't too far a journey. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

The Norton Commando is a motorcycle from the 1960s and 70s. It was notorious for breaking down--often due to Lucas electrical components. Troubleshooting the problem often caused people to pull their hair out (or so I am told--I only experience with Lucas on british sports cars, but the end result was the same. Lucas electrical rage).

So when I first read the headline, I thought you were getting an old motorcycle back on the road!

Have you by any chance downloaded the Microsoft Service pack 2? If you have that is probably your problem. It is not compatible with Norton's Firewall.All I have is Windows XP. I don't know what a pack 2 is.

Welcome to the club.

Norton Security blocks URLs with the word "advertising" in them. Hurting my web site traffic & annoying my customers. Apparently "advertising" is a dirty word to those idiots.

The usual shotgun approach to any problem. Jerks.

I wrote them about it. I expect an answer any decade now.

Seriesly,
Do the following and never run Norton again.

1. Use Trendmicro online free scanner.
2. Do not use outlook express for email--OR just never open attachments.
3. Do not go to nasty sites.

Do these and you will never get another virus.

I only run Systemworks from the CD: it does fine in that mode.

BitDefender and V-Catch work to keep the bugs out.

I came to the conclusion...after almost two years of trying to use Norton...that it was causing a huge number of errors on my CPU...and so I dumped it for McAfee. Never again....did I experience massive errors. I can't figure it out...and often wonder if some some special virus came into my system...that Norton simply couldn't handle.

I do not use Norton Internet Security 2004. I do use Norton Anti-Virus 2004 plus a personal firewall.

My Internet Security includes Norton anti-virus and Norton personal firewall.

What causes you to uninstall and reinstall NIS?

What operating system are you using?

A security warning from Norton would come on and it would tell me that my computer has developed an internal error.

What's an operating system?

I have been using macafee for three years now. It has been nothing short of perfect. It checks not just for viruses but anyother harmful file like malware and spamware.. Plus its firewall is pretty good, maybe not the best but I like it, since I have a nice router setup I dont have to worry too much about my firewall service.

I just bought and installed the 2005 version of Norton Systemworks.

I won't be buying 2006 Systemworks

My Norton expires in July, I won't be buying another.

It doesnt? Since when? Macafee has idetified malware and other similar programs many times, it doesnt protect against further programs but it does identify and delete, or quarantine.

Good thing for me I get macafee for free from the Army, so I guess I am a begger not being choosy.

HEY,...we found out what was wrong with our[less than a yr old] desktop , Norton went over the fantail with the rest of the garbage,...now that's better ps our son's G4 never had Norton,LOL!

Make sure you uninstall Norton Anti-Virus and the Live Update before you install any other packages.

Thanks. I was wondering if I had to get rid of it all before installing another kind. My Norton had me totally locked out yesterday. It showed errors in every list re: Anti-virus, firewall, spam protection, everything. I sat here for about 10 minutes totally depressed and confused on what to do. I poked and prodded about in the dark...but here I am. Don't ask me what I did. I don't know.

Get rid of all Microsoft products. . . replace Internet Explorer w/ Firefox. I've had no problems and no Norton since I did that six months ago. It's like being let out of prison!

Also .. Whenever I delete or add any software - I always run defrag. I've found it makes the transition to new software much easier and less problematic. After I delete the software - I run defrag - then after I reinstall the software - I run defrag.

Thanks, I'll write that down too. I'm making a list of things that are being suggested for me to do. I will follow them to the letter.

Norton is horrid! Macafee is a bit better but not by much. AVG is free and is very good. Another good one is called System Suite by V-Com. Its a all in one like norton that runs great and is only $40 bucks. Comes with Anti-virus, Firewall and a bunch of other stuff. Works fantastic! On my list. I'll check it out. Thanks.
