Bake sale brings probation at GVSU

A cupcake sale intended as a satirical jab at affirmative action has resulted in probation for the College Republicans at Grand Valley State University.

The Student Organization Review Board notified the group Wednesday its March 21 "Affirmative Action Bake Sale" violated a university rule that requires financial transactions to be nondiscriminatory.

During the sale, three members of the group -- who have resigned -- applied affirmative action principles to cupcake pricing. The students offered the treats for $2 for white men, 75 cents for blacks and white women, 50 cents for Asians and Hispanics, and 5 cents for American Indians.

Following last Friday's misconduct hearing, the five-member review board decided to put the student group on probation until Dec. 1.

Please note that the GVSU Republicans continue to grovel, rather than taking a stand for free speech and/or against affirmative action:

The review board also required the student group to make a public apology and create a leadership development plan to make sure club leaders are aware of university policies and procedures. The group will retain university funding and campus organization privileges.

The College Republicans say they do not plan to appeal.

"I'm hoping that from here, we can just move forward taking what we've learned," said Karen Hall, a 19-year-old sophomore and vice president of the organization.

In a prepared statement, the new leaders of the group explain that "the club did not support holding a bake sale with discounted prices as a parody of affirmative action. However, without proper support, individuals went forward with such a bake sale."

The group also apologized "that individuals using our club's name failed to adhere to university policies."

Talk about wasting a golden opportunity! Fight the suspension on the grounds that the University routinely conducts race-based financial transactions in their financial aid department!

Apparently the affirmative action based fees for school do not violate the above rule! In other words, some can discriminate and some can not!

Bull Hockey!

Bull. The pricing was clearly satire and protected political speech. These bake sales have been held at a number of campuses across the country. The local pubbies have the same courage of their convictions of too many RINO's.

The Young Republicans did the same affirmative action bake sale here at the University of Texas. It was really cool! $1 for whites, .50 for hispanics, and .25 for blacks.

Another funny thing that happened was the "illegal immigration tag/hunt" that was rumored to take place on Texas History Day. 200 protestors showed up with signs and everything, only to find 4 Young Conservatives sitting at a table with pamphlets about Texas history. The saddest part is, after realizing no such illegal immigration "catch and release" event was going to take place, the protestors stuck around and picketed the Young Conservatives. It was a hilarious read in the school paper the next day. Stupid hippies.

They undoubtedly have an in-state and out-of-state tuition schedule as well.

I graduated from UT in 1979. Looks like NOTHING has changed. Stupid protests took place on a daily basis on the campus back then. Iranian Students Assoc protesting the Shah, Maoists protesting capitalism, Anarchists protesting everything, Animal rights people protesting the biology labs, Anti-nukes protesting the Triga research reactor in the ME building and Austin's participation in the South Texas Project, ad nauseum........

The local republican party leader demanded that the student president of the college republicans step down. The local leader of the Republican party should be fired. I have send a letter to the Michigan Republican Party, but as usual, got no response from them. The Michigan party needs a whole new attitude, and that will only come with all new leadership.

I have said this for a long time and will continue to say it.

If students today were not being taught the culture of victimology and instead being taught self reliance, self worth, hard work, and achievement an enterprising minority would take advantage of these affirmative action bake sales. An American Indian, who has the lowest possible price available would buy up the entire stock and resell them at a nice profit.

But no. They have to get on the victim train instead of grasping an opportunity.

Since financial transactions must be non discriminatory, are they going to extend this non-discrimination to scholarships?
