Abortion Clinics on Edge After Manifesto

ATLANTA - Abortion clinics around the country are bracing for attacks after Olympic bomber Eric Rudolph issued his manifesto justifying the use of violence to stop "the worst massacre in human history."

"When one of these extremists puts out a call to action, oftentimes, others do try to follow in their footsteps," said Vicki Saporta, head of the National Abortion Federation, which represents 400 U.S. clinics. "He clearly is speaking to the extremists who believe in justifiable homicide."

Rudolph will get four life sentences without parole after pleading guilty Wednesday to carrying out the deadly bombing at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and attacks at two abortion clinics and a gay nightclub. The blasts killed two people and wounded 123.

A federal prosecutor said Thursday she'll recommend that a $1 million reward go to two men who tracked Rudolph moments after the last deadly blast, and who provided authorities with a license plate number eventually traced to Rudolph's pickup truck.

In an 11-page manifesto handed out by his attorneys, Rudolph said the Olympic bombing was an attempt to embarrass the United States in front of the world for allowing abortion.

"Because I believe that abortion is murder, I also believe that force is justified ... in an attempt to stop it," Rudolph wrote.

Abortion clinics and federal agents are on a heightened state of alert.

"We're making sure our liaisons have kept up with the clinics and to make sure the security clinics have is up to date," said Mike Campbell, spokesman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. "Most of them are very cognizant they can be a target of anybody who doesn't like abortion."

Anti-abortion groups condemned Rudolph's endorsement of violence.

"It looks to me as if he views himself as a one-man army against the entire world or at least the United States," said Troy Newman, president of Operation Rescue. "I would concur with his opinion that abortion is murder. However, his frustration that leads to violence is never an acceptable way to accept this."

U.S. Attorney Alice Martin's recommendation on the $1 million reward will be forwarded to the FBI, but the final decision is up to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

"The witnesses have made no request for a reward, and it's not available until the prosecution has been completed," Martin said. "But in my opinion it is worthy of recommendation that those two witnesses be considered."

Martin said Jermaine Hughes, a 20-year-old college student at the time, and attorney Jeff Tickal provided the key evidence that led to Rudolph's quick identification after a fatal abortion clinic bombing in Alabama.

After the explosion, Hughes alerted police that he had seen a suspicious figure walking away from the clinic. He and Tickal then both followed Rudolph briefly in separate vehicles.

Tickal wrote down the license number of Rudolph's pickup truck and eventually provided the first eyewitness identification of Rudolph based on a newspaper photo.

After that, Rudolph spent more than five years as a fugitive before he was captured in 2003 in Murphy, N.C.

Lost amidst all this, imo.. The act of aborting a fetus is a violent act, in and of itself.

Advocating the cessation of violence against the defenseless isn't a violent act, is it?

I can't argue with that.

Violently murdering the unborn (just born) innocent is a peaceful and serene act, so says the bloodly handed abortionist killers.

Fighting violence with violence? Isn't that where you become them? Anyway, how he can justify killing and injuring people at a concert to protest abortion is a puzzle to me. A lot of these people were with their children they had chosen to birth and enjoying life.

An innocent woman was killed in the 1996 Olympic bombing. And no one who is Gay deserves to be murdered or bombed. There were innocent people including girls who really don't know what they're doing. I don't really care about these abortion doctors, but come on.

Just so Cindy. Let's call Eric Rudolph what he is...a terrorist, attempting to terrify people into compliance with his anti-abortion stance. We must separate the intention from the action. The intent to end abortion is good, the action of dispensing 'justice' vigilante style is not.

Applying social, economic, and other forms of pressure to abortionists and those seeking abortions is acceptable, as is voting and putting forth legislation to make abortions more difficult to get, hopefully culminating in the abolition of the practice. But when a lone individual chooses to take the law into his own hands and decides who lives or dies, that individual has left the reservation and must be isolated, captured, and in my opinion put to death. He is not an innocent, and deserves his punishment. Unborn babies are innocent, and do not deserve death.

How about that money be used for free sonograms? End of abortion problem, end of this vigilantism.....

Thankyou.

So basically, this man feels justified in killing the girls who make that stupid decision.

I don't know if they choose to ignore this, but he bombed a Gay club.

The reason I am against promoting homosexuality is that by encouraging homosexuality, you create homesexuals. These young men, are dying of AIDS and if it's not AIDS it's something else. The Left is responsible for their deaths in that aspect. This man had no right to kill innocent people.

I really could care less about an abortion doctor, though.

I agree about the homosexuals. I didn't deliberately omit them. I believe the behavior is wrong but we are all God's children so whether they knew what they were doing or not ....

How do you justify your first statement with the second?

I agree. Rudolph went and killed innocent people because he was protesting... the innocent killing of people. This guy is a nutbag.

Huh? Not all gay people have AIDS or HIV. Also, many people have AIDS who are not gay. There are plenty of orphans here in Thailand who have AIDS who are much too young to ever have had a sexual experience.

Even killing abortionists is wrong. I am a Christian and it's hard but I pray for them too. Despite what they do I don't want them harmed or killed. Just stopped.

I'm not an Eric Rudolph fan. But did you stop to think about what you are saying? Maybe the very act of killing innocent people who have no choice was the ultimate statement -- in Rudolph's mind. I'm not defending him even by a long stretch, but the way you worded your posts made it clear what his message was. Innocents should not die, but they do.

I can't argue with that.

If you agree with Rudolph, you can take up his cause, become violent, kill people, retreat the woods like a cowardly animal, beg to a Prosecutor that he spare your life and live the rest of your days in a 6x6 cell.

Or you can take a step back and see what a twisted POS Rudolph really is and how he has hurt the Pro-Life movement.
