Boy suspended from school for wearing makeup and lipstick

By Irma Lemus, Staff Writer

SAN BERNARDINO - In what is shaping as a battle between conformity and self-expression, Pacific High School has suspended a ninth-grade boy for wearing lipstick and eye makeup.

Officials are calling it a violation of school policy, which they seemed unable to find in writing...

James Herndon, 16, repeating his second year at the school, and his mother, Valerie Wallace, say James has been wearing black lipstick and red eye makeup the entire time he has been enrolled at Pacific. He also wears his hair in a dyed-red mohawk with the sides shaved. But that was not cited as part of the reason for the five-day suspension, which was imposed Monday.

...Kid is repeating a grade, has maintained poor performance, is disruptive but, yet, the ACLU wants to "protect" him from discrimination.

I'll bet he gets really mad when people laugh at him, too. Looks like a potential school shooter to me. Thanks a bunch, Mom.

My son wanted to dress like this kid when he was in HS but I said "N-O NO!" Instead, he snookered me into the baggy pants theme.

How dare you draw attention to that!! What are you, some kind of old timey do-gooder. That boy doesn't need a dad. He and his mother are making it just fine, thank you very much. Children today have the public schools and the rest of the village to help them along. The idea that input from the "biological" father might be required is an out-dated way of thinking and you, mlC9852, should never bring the topic up again, or expect mention of it from a newspaper.

School administrators have always gotten pissey over unusual clothes or hair.

In the early 60s I got suspended from Highschool for 3 days for wearing a coat and tie.

"If I can't wear makeup," James said, "then the girls or the staff can't wear makeup either."

Both freedom of expression and equal protection clauses of the constitution will make this a sure loser for the school system should the case go to the courts. These school systems always say they are following the law (it reminds me of the case in Upstate N.Y. where the young girl was suspended for wearing red, white, and blue beads as a show of support for our troops) but are too often breaking both State and Federal Laws.

These school administrators should be dismissed or worse for costing the taxpayers needless money to prosecute these idiotic cases.

While I wouldn't encourage anyone to dress in that way to express oneself, hey..."chacque on son goût" as the French say.

Jim & Mom would be better served if they kept their mind on his academic performance rather than these kerfuffles that have all the meaning of a fart.

3 cheers for this...uh, kid!

By dressing this way, he sends a clear signal to anyone who so much as glances his way that there's something just not right about the boy. (That IS a boy, right?) We should encourage all of the DUmmies to follow his/her/its lead.
