Conservative take on sexual assault harms efforts to fix problems
The Digital Collegian (Penn State) ^ | Friday, April 15, 2005 | editorial

Posted on 04/15/2005 12:40:21 PM PDT by Willie Green

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.

Irony has never been so transparent.

The visit of conservative and self-proclaimed anti-feminist Phyllis Schlafly to Penn State Wednesday has been denied by Young Americans for Freedom as a counter to Take Back the Night but acknowledged as a "happy coincidence."

While 200 people marched through campus to fight rape and sexual assault, Schlafly spoke to a group of 100 listeners about why women should carry guns to deter such crime.

The absurdity that 20,000 female college students should need to carry firearms to protect themselves from rape is as obvious as it is outrageous.

In fact, it is hardly worth a rebuttal.

Truth is, rape and sexual assault are not political issues. They are issues of safety. No woman, conservative or liberal, should need to carry concealed weapons to ensure her safety.

Despite not mentioning Take Back the Night during her speech, Schlafly's presence on campus clearly demonstrates the need for such activism.

Those who participated in Take Back the Night should be commended for taking a stand against an issue that is too often ignored by public officials.

And those participants should be motivated by the festering ignorance of public figures such as Schlafly, who uses hypocrisy to gain a following.

This woman, who holds a law degree and was appointed to the Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution from 1985 to 1991 by President Ronald Reagan, says that women should stay home instead of pursuing a career.

It is ridiculous to ask women, half of this country's work force, to delay their careers until each of their children graduates from high school.

Schlafly said in her speech that feminists seek preferential treatment for women, not equality for all. She even said that feminism is the "big lie of the century." This is a statement made out of pure ignorance of the feminist movement. Ask any women's studies professor or student.

"Feminism," along with liberalism, has been thrown into the grab bag of progressive terms that have been twisted into carrying a negative connotation.

To be a feminist does not require one to participate in bra burning and flag-waving protests. So-called anti-feminists such as Schlafly perpetuate the myth of feminists being radical women.

True feminists speak up when they encounter discrimination. They fight for equality of all people, and they hold peaceful demonstrations against sexual assault. Feminism is about equal opportunity for women, gays and lesbians, minorities, and any other oppressed group.

Anything else is a lie.

In fact, it is hardly worth a rebuttal.

Then she should have ended the article right there, if it didn't need a rebuttal. But she chose to continue.

Women who aren't scared of guns are my kind of women.

As the so-called Million Mom March was letting out in Denver once, we lined up just past the gates of their rally and warned them that they were going into a rough neighborhood and their T-shirts would indicate to muggers that they were unarmed and unable to fight back.

For some reason, they didn't like that one bit. I wonder why, I thought it was good advice...

I think so too. Geez, if they don't want to carry guns, okay. But if they'd just shaddap about it, nobody would know and the concealed-carry laws would work for them too. Instead they put up their hands and say 'Me! Me! Attack me!'

One of the TRT boyz had made up some really nice, attractive, glossy yards signs proclaiming "This house is a gun-free zone". He offered them for free to the Millom Moms as they left. None took him up on his generous offer.

At least Schlafly is proposing a solution, istead of just whinging about the problem.

Try it and see if it works. (The problem with progessives is they are scared to change)

The only weapen women have is to be decent and say NO!

If you say so. I'd still suggest a handgun for backup, just in case 'no' doesn't work.

Actually, admittedly, carrying any kind of concealed weapon slightly increases the risk to the safety of the carrier. The point of a concealed weapon is that it dramatically increases the risk to the safety of predators, producing a net improvement for public safety!!!

Might as well change the sign to Safe house for burgalars as that will be the effect. In a perfect world women wouldn't need to carry any kind of protection. Note to liberals: In your desire to avoid God and black and white truths I shall kindly inform you that this is not a perfect world.

Written by the Digital Collegian, that is by the students of Penn State.

Did you really expect a coherent argument?

Most universities are institutions that keep people stupid. Case and point. The question is: how did we get here?

-No woman, conservative or liberal, should need to carry concealed weapons to ensure her safety.-

"Should" not need to? I totally agree, but the actual need outweighs what might take place in a perfect world.

Of course, if anybody's going to carry a weapon, they should know how to use it. No point giving anyone a gun if they're afraid to hold it.

Well if that's the truth then it seems that at Penn State there is a difference between the truth and reality. If there are rapists about, a gun is just what you need.

'20,000' of them don't have to. As long as a few do, or even as long as some might, the mere possibility of getting shot acts as a deterrent.

Absolutely. Carjackings in Houston went down dramatically when a few jackers got shot dead. In that case, the guns used to shoot the jackers were illegal to be carried in the car, but that didn't make the perps any less legally dead.

Hey, I am a women. Women are not helpless creatures! If their brain is funcioning at all, they can avoid situations. Men think women want sex as much as they do, so why not try? Its up to the women more than the man. to control. I'm not talking about rapists'

Your attitude is indeed amazing but not surprising. Women are usually more in denial and hateful towards women who've been raped. I hope your guardian angel works overtime my friend. The things you're saying could one day be said about you.

Of course, that an opinion is held by at least one "womyn's studies" student or professor is documentary proof of the rightness of that opinion and is actually admissible as evidence in court. No "womyn's studies" professor or student could ever be biased or incorrect. (slapping forehead)

Ah, the weapon I chose to have with me is a nice little 38 caliber, Smith and Wesson with a shrouded hammer, loaded with hollow points. Fits my hand well, and comes in and out of my pocket without snagging on my clothes. That tends to be a bit more effective at stopping a rape/robbery/mayhem than the word "NO". GROW UP!

You're kidding, right? If a guy holds a woman down and forces her to have sex, she's just as guilty as he is?
