On April 8, and again on April 12, the HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, featured a verbal assault on Pope John Paul II. Led by Maher, the pope was also attacked by Arianna Huffington. Here is a sample of what happened:
Maher: People waited in line for 24 hours to see the popes body and when they got to see the pope they smelled worse than he did.
Maher: For those who could not make the funeral, the Vatican has asked that in lieu of flowers, just stop touching your d---.
Maher: American Catholics say we love the pope, he should be a saint but he is kind of full of s--- on everything we believe.
Maher also said that the whole story of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the resurrection was grafted from paganism. He ended by mocking the death of the pope and the upcoming conclave.
Huffington egged Maher on, saying this guy [the pope] should be blamed for the sexual abuse scandal, as well as AIDS in Africa.
Catholic League president William Donohue remarked as follows;
HBO bears the ultimate responsibility for this exercise in incivility. They must know that Maher is a man infused with hatred towards the Catholic Church, and that Huffington has long demonstrated that she has no ethical standards whatsoever. So what did they expect? Because Maher and Huffington have a total IQ in double digits, it is not worth our while to try to correct their ignorance. But that doesnt mean we wont try to persuade HBO to stop with the bigotry. Timing, as well as content, matters, and on these two counts, HBO failed miserably.
Maher is an idiot and apparently a woman beater
How can one be insulted by Bill Maher?
His rants and insults are comparable to my toddler's bathroom-speak and pretzel-logic.
Mostly, I half listen and say un-hunh. It's best not to engage toddlers in too much conversation that invariably ends in the word, "NO."
I wonder if any of the 12 people watching were Catholic?
Boycott HBO!
Why am I not surprised.
I nominate William Donohue for comment of the year. This one is just too priceless to let go.
Actually, I don't think they hate the late Pope. They are in love with the idea of themselves being ultra-hip by trashing him so coarsely.
Poseurs.
This jackhole is such a poor excuse for a commentator, just a worthless idiot. I can't believe anybody takes him as some kind of informed voice, but it shows how low the level of discourse has plummeted.
These people have no souls, and if I am wrong may god have mercy upon them.
"I don't think they hate the late Pope. They are in love with the idea of themselves being ultra-hip by trashing him so coarsely."
Is it only that they think they're being HIP? What else do they get out of such a stance? I literally have no idea!
Their audience is also measured in double digits, and half of those people fell asleep watching a movie, and forgot to change the channel!
Maher is nothing but a contrarian.
I guess that's it, and not worth analyzing further really.
The best description I ever heard about Maher was that he looked like someone with a penis on his face...
I heard Rush say last week that within a week the Left would start trashing the Pope. Once again, Rush was right.
Maher is a Libertarian though.
and that's an insult to the penis
You hit it right on the head.
When Maher had his show on Comedy Central, which was before the whole Monica thing, he bashed Clinton. But ever since he left for ABC, he become the Rats butt-boy.
And don't forget how he mocked John Ashcroft after the man went through serious surgery and wound up in the intensive care unit. It takes a really great guy and brilliant comic to trash people who are dead or hospitalized. Really, every time I see this guy on the tube I'm amazed a what a complete, total 100% A-hole he is.
Bill Maher is just upset that he spent all that time hanging out at the Playboy Mansion and couldn't get laid.
He actually endorsed Bob Dole in 1996.
Can you imagine him saying anything similar about some mullah? He'd be dead meat.
I don't know. I'm thinking of blaming the whole AIDS in Africa thing on Arianna. They pay as much attention to her as they did to him so she's just as responsible.
People like Maher (comedians in general) have a need to be in the spotlight....to be "on". Having failed as a stand up comic he has turned to self-important, deluded commentary.
They're both just attention "Harlots"...they'll say and do anything for a headline, since they don't have the talent to earn the headline honestly.
He's trying too hard to be like George Carlin, just lest witty, even though Carlin hasn't been very witty lately.
Blamed for AIDS? How? The Catholic program in Uganda has had the best results on the continent, and it features a "Just Say No" type of message!
Was he naking these remarks seriously, or did he think he was funny. Amazing all the things people have the guts to say about someone once they aren't around to defend themselves.
Well then you'll love tonight's edition of Maher's usual Friday night pagan rituals. Everybody's favorite Dixie Chick, Natalie Maines will be saying whatever Howard Dean and Ronnie Earl write down for her to say. I believe the Chicks are about to foist their latest anti-Bush/DeLay/War talking points (and album) on us all. Do NOT take the bait!
Maher is a nobody who got to be a somebody who is still a nobody.
No. Maher is a socialist, Christian-hating libertine.
Maher used to be fun...not anymore...especially since the last Presidential election...he's become nasty. Oh well, his loss. No law that says I have to watch him anymore...and I don't.
At least Carlin was funny at some points throughout his career. Maher just comes across as bitter. His puffy red face suggests a drinking problem.
One can be both.
Boortz, for example, is a Libertarian, but he is also on the right.
That's what makes it so painful to watch him now. His wife's death, just sucked any joy he had left out of him.
Maher is a Libertarian though.
***
No, he doesn't even come close.
Maher is NOT a libertarian. He's a gun grabber and PETA nut. You can not be a libertarian and be anti-2nd amendment.
Big Rough Tough Bill Maher is just mad at Catholics because they don't condone his beating up women and abuse of his girlfriends. What a man! It takes a sophisticated liberal to beat the cr*p out of five foot petite girl. Such a strong virile guy!
This might give him pause as it could be for him, the Good Lord forbid, a "preview of coming attractions."
Carlin has become a sad and bitter old man who's not even in the same neighboorhood as funny.
But Brain Droppings was one of the funniest books I ever read. It skewered left and right pretty equally.
Maher who? Huffington who? The pope I've heard of; these doofuses are cyphers as far as I'm concerned. Maybe they think they will attract some attention by speaking incivily of someone with a name.
They should be careful with that approach; it can come back to bite you! Reminds me of one of the funnier incidents in the Book of Acts:
Acts 19
11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.
13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We[a] exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.
15 And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?"
16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered[b] them, and prevailed against them,[c] so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
