BILL MAHER TRASHES POPE (Arianna Huffington Joins In)
Catholic League ^ | 4/14/2005 | William Donohue

Posted on 04/15/2005 2:43:25 PM PDT by Rutles4Ever

On April 8, and again on April 12, the HBO show, “Real Time with Bill Maher,” featured a verbal assault on Pope John Paul II. Led by Maher, the pope was also attacked by Arianna Huffington. Here is a sample of what happened:

Maher: “People waited in line for 24 hours to see the pope’s body and when they got to see the pope they smelled worse than he did.”

Maher: “For those who could not make the funeral, the Vatican has asked that in lieu of flowers, just stop touching your d---.”

Maher: “American Catholics say we love the pope, he should be a saint but he is kind of full of s--- on everything we believe.”

Maher also said that the whole story of Jesus, the Virgin Mary and the resurrection was “grafted from paganism.” He ended by mocking the death of the pope and the upcoming conclave.

Huffington egged Maher on, saying “this guy” [the pope] should be blamed for the sexual abuse scandal, as well as AIDS in Africa.

Catholic League president William Donohue remarked as follows;

“HBO bears the ultimate responsibility for this exercise in incivility. They must know that Maher is a man infused with hatred towards the Catholic Church, and that Huffington has long demonstrated that she has no ethical standards whatsoever. So what did they expect? Because Maher and Huffington have a total IQ in double digits, it is not worth our while to try to correct their ignorance. But that doesn’t mean we won’t try to persuade HBO to stop with the bigotry. Timing, as well as content, matters, and on these two counts, HBO failed miserably.”

How can one be insulted by Bill Maher?

His rants and insults are comparable to my toddler's bathroom-speak and pretzel-logic.

Mostly, I half listen and say un-hunh. It's best not to engage toddlers in too much conversation that invariably ends in the word, "NO."

Man, he is so radical and irreverent. What a courageous guy! Going after the Pope, man, that takes guts!

This jackhole is such a poor excuse for a commentator, just a worthless idiot. I can't believe anybody takes him as some kind of informed voice, but it shows how low the level of discourse has plummeted.

Is it only that they think they're being HIP? What else do they get out of such a stance? I literally have no idea!

Their audience is also measured in double digits, and half of those people fell asleep watching a movie, and forgot to change the channel!

And don't forget how he mocked John Ashcroft after the man went through serious surgery and wound up in the intensive care unit. It takes a really great guy and brilliant comic to trash people who are dead or hospitalized. Really, every time I see this guy on the tube I'm amazed a what a complete, total 100% A-hole he is.

I don't know. I'm thinking of blaming the whole AIDS in Africa thing on Arianna. They pay as much attention to her as they did to him so she's just as responsible.

People like Maher (comedians in general) have a need to be in the spotlight....to be "on". Having failed as a stand up comic he has turned to self-important, deluded commentary.

These people are from another planet. I'm convinced.

Frank Zappa always said that there were two things that were universal...Hydrogen, and stupidity. That was a stupid comment on Maher's part.

The very frightening thing was that in the two times i've seen him on O'Riley's programme, he's handed Bill O'Riley's @$$ to him.

Maher claims to be a Libertarian. Problem is that he's a faciast who wants to control every aspect of American life that he personally disagrees with.

Well Mr. Maher, i am a Libertarian, i've known many Libertarians, You sir, are NO Libertarian.

Mr. Mahr would be best advised to quietly meditate and contemplate the various images on the lower half of Michaelangeo's "The Last Judgement" in the Sistine Chapel.

This might give him pause as it could be for him, the Good Lord forbid, a "preview of coming attractions."

Maher who? Huffington who? The pope I've heard of; these doofuses are cyphers as far as I'm concerned. Maybe they think they will attract some attention by speaking incivily of someone with a name.

They should be careful with that approach; it can come back to bite you! Reminds me of one of the funnier incidents in the Book of Acts:

Acts 19
11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

13 Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We[a] exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches." 14 Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.

15 And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?"

16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered[b] them, and prevailed against them,[c] so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18 And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.
