Minuteman Project to issue major planning statement - Organizers reviewing project's future, direction

April 17, 2005 (Tombstone, AZ)---On Monday, April 18, organizers of the Minuteman Project will be issuing a major statement on the immediate and long-term direction of the project.

Rumors have been circulating that the project might cut short its originally planned month-long monitoring of a 23 mile section of the Arizona-Mexican border by citizen volunteers. The project's cofounders, Chris Simcox and Jim Gilchrist, said it would be a mistake to think the border will be abandoned. "However, our overwhelming early successes along with more recent developments have caused us to review how best to direct the project the rest of the month and beyond, " Simcox said.

The project has generated national-indeed, worldwide-attention and controversy. President Bush alluded to the project's volunteers as "vigilantes." Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO), Chairman of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and an outspoken critic of the president's immigration policies, said the volunteers were "heroes in my book." Tancredo has invited the leaders of the project to travel to Washington DC and report on the project to the members of his caucus.

Project organizers said they have been deluged with messages of support along with requests from citizens of the other border states to organize similar Projects in those states. Gilchrist said all issues would be addressed on Monday. The statement will be issued at 12:30pm in Tombstone from the office of the Tombstone Tumbleweed newspaper, 312 Toughnut Street.

Not happy about Tancredo's alignment - anti Speaker Tom Delay. Kudos to the Minutemen.

I think you are wrong. Since the MSM cant seem to slime the Minutemen, and the volume of immigration related bad news; any conservative with a conscience will see this is an issue that cannot be ignored.

You and the open borders folks are in the minority and on the losing side of this issue.

Folks who live in border states and have had livelihoods and lives disrupted by the illegals are making their case known.

You can minimize them as much as you want, the news will get out and you are on the wrong side.

Stop trying to drag those with an (R) prefix down to your Open Borders way of thinking. It's hurting them more than you can comprehend.

Tancredo's been in the news a lot lately. I admit to not knowing anything about him. Is he planning on running for Pres.? I admire his stand on the Minutemen Project but I think politicians are feeling the heat about illegal immigration and have figured maybe, for their own political sake, they need to read what the voters think about the Minutemen Project. And his criticism of DeLay that I've heard just makes it seem like he thinks he should step aside until an investigation is done. I certainly don't agree with him on that but he hasn't come out and said that he believes DeLay did anything illegal or unethical.

Well, as an example, prior to the Minutemen Project getting publicity (20 Mar 2005 or so), you and the OBL (That's Open Border Loons) Dane; bayourod; MikeinIraq; COEXERJ145 created many posts designed to ostracise interrupt and berate anyone who wished to defend the border to the point that intelligent discussion was impossible.

You have managed to enlighten many folks to the errors of your arguments, ad hominem attacks and minimizing any legitimate thought of defending the borders. My observations of posts indicate you are definitely in the minority.

Oh sweetheart, you're not up on the Minutemen are you? Apparently, they are not only not "shutting down", public opinion has been so high they are extending it past April 30 and now there is also a group in Yuma.

I'm still waiting for those polls from Tom about how unpopular the Minutemen are, judging from my area (not known from illegal immigration), they are quite popular here.

Anxiously awaiting....

Your first link:

52% think immigration should be curtailed
46% think it should be expanded or stay the same.

Landslide? No

58% of republicans approve of Bush's handling of immigration.

Your second link:

Virtually everyone is opposed to illegal immigration.
The problem is that if anyone disagrees with you about the solution to illegals, you accuse them of being OBL, which is dishonest.

You favor round-ups, mass deportations, militarizing the border, and building a fence.
I favor a guest worker program.

He sure is, Vidkun. Tancredo ran a poll and found that for those identified as quislings, opinion of the Minuteman Project was very low. He also found that, for those poll respondents among that same Benedict Arnold group, Osama Bin Laden was highly favored for President in 2008 and there was a disproportionate incidence of rectal-cranial inversion.

1. In many of the posts about "roundups" the illegals are already caught. Do you believe in catch and release as is the current policy for illegals, many whom are felons for being in the country?
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1384999/posts
2. Mass Deportations are a BUSH policy. Probably in repsonse to the Minutemen. Illegals get frequent flyer miles.

3. Militarizing the Border. Well Arizona has 3 military facilities on the border. Doesnt stop them. Wanna see the video?

MMP is very popular here in the midwest. I've not heard one voice against it.

The Minuteman Project is VERY popular in Cochise County. People see the Minuteman Project volunteers along the highway and they are constantly pulling over to thank them for being there. Many bring cookies, treats, sodas, coffee, doughnuts, and even soup. One resident near an MMP observation post cooked a bunch of them a lobster dinner last night.

County Supervisor Pat Call said in a letter that they've been the "perfect guests" and that he is pleased about the national attention they've brought to the border problem. Today, according to a conversation I had with Jim Gilchrist, Sheriff Larry Dever visited the Bible College to see the MMP and was pleased with the operations. He even gave Jim Gilchrist his signature cowboy hat right off his head and autographed it for him.

That is very nice to hear! I am one of many Americans who strongly support these brave and courageous individuals.

I remember reading that Tancredo asking the minutemen stop the project was just a rumor and that he and Gilchrest (not sure which project organizer...) were on the news and Tancredo said it wasn't true he asked them to stop. I would like to know if this is a rumor that Tancredo asked them to stop or if he truly did this. I'm really looking to support Tancredo, however if he did wuss out, I'd like to know.
