If Iran succeeds in building nuclear weapons, it could touch off an arms race that leads to the end of civilization, Henry Kissinger warned yesterday. The former secretary of state told a panel discussion in midtown that the world needs to be ready if diplomacy fails to dissuade Iran from halting its nuclear program.

"I do not believe that living in a world with 20 or 30 nuclear states is a situation that civilized life can support," said Kissinger, who served under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

Sir Harold Evans, editor-in-chief of The Week magazine, moderated the forum on Middle East peace, which the magazine sponsored. It was held at Michael Jordan's Steakhouse in Grand Central Terminal.

Ambassador Dennis Ross, a former U.S. envoy to Middle East peace talks, agreed that Iran obtaining atomic weapons could be a "tipping point" that turns the entire region nuclear. Ross scoffed at Tehran's claim that its nuclear program is simply for generating electricity.

In separate comments in Washington, Secretary of State Rice said the United States is waiting to see if Britain, France and Germany are able to deter Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

"If this does not work, then, of course, the Security Council remains an option," Rice said. "And we have made it clear with our European friends that that is, in fact, the case."

Iran is unlikely to produce a nuclear weapon before the next decade, Rice said.

A simple answer would be for Rice to tell Khatami that we will redirect half of our nuclear weapons if Iran gets the Islamobomb.

Kissinger is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the CFR and the Trilateralists. End of civilization, yeah right.

Kissinger is demented and no one in their right minds should listen to this blabbermouth.

Seems to me you've forgotten about what Kissinger has accomplished. He seems quite coherant to me and he's quite correct on this issue.

Are you advocating that we go to war with your former homeland in order to prevent Iran from getting nukes?

In the natural, Kissinger is right on. But God didn't create this planet so man could destroy it. He created it to be a paradise where man and God could live together for eternity. We will soon see who's "will be done, on earth", fallen man (total destruction), or redeemed man (eternal paradise), carries the day.

Maybe not civilization but if Iran had nuclear weapons the death toll would still be in the millions.

Thanks to Jimmy Carter's betrayal of the Shah, the world's premier state sponsor of anti-American terrorism was founded.

With aid from Russia, China and North Korea, Iran is becoming a nuclear power.

Sitting on the world's largest petroleum reserve, Iran's nuclear ambition is not energy, but weaponry.

We--America--are the Great Satan, while Israel is the Little Satan.

Kissinger is aware of the danger of an international player which does not recognize a concept of limits.

The power behind the Beirut Embassy and Beirut Marine barracks bombings in 1983 acknowledges no limit to its actions--for it is, after all, the vanguard of the Islamist revolution, an organizing principle which calls for the slaying of the infidel "wherever you find him".

Such a mad regime equipped with mass killing capacity by our historic enemies Russia, China and North Korea, viewing us as the main impediment to its acquisition of converts by conquest will engineer a series of deniable nuclear terror events creating unimaginable conditions.

Should the U.S. be decapitated by such a campaign, what will restrain China's hegemonic ambition to fulfil its cosmic destiny as the Middle Kingdom?

And, to be sure, Kissinger knows China.

I'm for indiscriminate killing anytime the opportunity presents itself.

I have heard a rumor that nuclear devices are detectable via sattelites and that this detection cannot be prevented.

Russia might have tried bringing nukes into the US by unconvential methods otherwise.
