COVER STORY
Ms. Right
She is quite possibly the most divisive figure in the public eye. But love her or hate her, you do not know the real Ann Coulter

By John Cloud

Anne Coulter and I were well into a bottle of white Bordeaux—and I believe she was chewing her fourth piece of Nicorette—when it happened. From what little I knew of her—mainly her propensity for declamations such as “liberals love America like O.J. loved Nicole”—I thought it impossible for Coulter to blush. Many of her fans would later tell me it was her fearlessness they admired, her fully unburdened sense of outrage against liberalism, against anyone left of Joseph McCarthy (whom Coulter flattered in her best-selling book Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism).

But in person, Coulter is more likely to offer jokes than fury. For instance, you might ask her to name her historical antecedents in the conservative movement, and she’ll burst forth, “I’m Attila the Hun,” and then break into gales of laughter so forceful you smell the Nicorette. “Genghis Khan!”

So finally, I asked that she be serious...

Good article. Surprisingly objective account for liberal TIME. The picture on the cover brings to mind the old adage about never judging what's inside. And its good stuff about the 21st Century's Conservative Diva.

Coulter told me her most persistent stalker “is the one who will kill me someday.”

I wonder if he's a FReeper.

I tried to read the article, but was starting to gag by the middle of page 2 and quit. The sense is Coulter is the conservative b!t@h the left loves to smack. Let them think that, but she is much more and speaks the truth in plain terms.

Coulter accurately described partial birth abortion and gave that as an example as to how the left supports evil. The Time reporter then sneers, “The idea that she doesn’t coarsen our culture and make it more difficult to speak complicated truths is nonsense.”

the author was quoting a critic. you're missing out on a pretty good article.

unless, of course, you think ann is God incarnate.

Given the cover photo, I was expecting to see a nasty hit piece. It was a surprisingly even-handed item.

It isn't a hit piece and includes some good information about Anne's background - but it's Ann seen through the MSM filter.

They quote some mysterious conservative to say she's a liability. And the tone throughout the article is
"Coulter is so smart and funny - yet attacks liberals - is she just a dishonest hack/clown trying to make a buck, or is she nuts/evil?"

The reporter was quoting a snide comment made by someone else.

I read the article last night, so I'll be paraphrasing. Cloud said that many people misunderstand Coulter's wit, that they misunderstand that she uses humor to make points about facts.

He cites a few instances of her critics claiming she lied, pointing out that Ann was right and they are wrong. He says that many of the people trying to play gotcha with Ann take her words out of context.

He begins the article with the question of whether she's sincere or just a hack, and ends with the firm conclusion that AC is a woman who believes strongly in what she's doing.

It really is a pretty fair article which paints Coulter in an overall positive light. There were a couple of instances I thought the author wasn't able to "get" it, but he didn't hit her over the head with that.

The cover is clever in its "fair and balanced she isn't" message because of the imbalance of her body in the photograph. Nonetheless, the photograph shows a very feminine, attractive woman in a smart pose (and very smart shoes).

The article is surprisingly balanced, given the source. When reading it, my feathers were ruffled by some allogations against Coulter, but other comments make her out to be the intellectual charmer she is.

That Ann Coulter is seen as polarizing by a number of conservatives doesn't hurt our agenda, really. In my mind, there's a huge difference betweent the shrill butch Hillary or the raghead Barbara Boxer and the attractive and smart Ann Coulter.

This is the part you are referring to:
After all, one of her most voluble critics, writer Eric Alterman (What Liberal Media?) told Time, “The idea that she doesn’t coarsen our culture and make it more difficult to speak complicated truths is nonsense.”

So, you are wrong.
