Secretary Bolton's intimate understanding of these subjects has caused him to have strong views about them. On occasion, he has expressed those views forcefully and with a measure of rhetorical hyperbole. While some have seized upon his choice of words to disqualify Mr. Bolton, he is indisputably correct in arguing that the UN has rarely been united in the way and for the purposes its founders envisioned. He is also correct in noting that the international community has generally proven most effective in dealing with international crises when led by the United States. It would serve U.S. interests well to have the man charged with shaping efforts to reform and revitalize the United Nations guided by these insights.
John Bolton has been a steady and effective advocate for President Bush's policies inside often-hostile bureaucracies. That should hardly be a disqualifier for his promotion given that, in our government, agencies like the State Department are supposed to be part of an executive branch led by the President.

Treachery for sure!!! Once again an American that will stand up for Americans is stabbed in the Back, I'm sick of this Crap!!
Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US, The only sure cure!!
We can blame Dick Lugar who lets the Democrats run rings around him in the committee and George Voinovich and Chuck Hagel for their lack of spine by listening to RAT charges as gospel.
the problem is, presidents come and go, but the folks at the state department stay.
Excellent insights. I agree. I've always thought that Richard Lugar was Caspar Milque Toast. He's so weak and mealy mouthed.....and so far, I'm not impressed with the way in which Bill Frist is running things, either. Oh dear. Oh dear........we need a "man on a white horse!" Quick! Where is he?
Alas, what we truly need now is RONALD WILSON REAGAN! No clones anywhere. He was "an American original." One time only. I miss him so much.
I watched CSPAN and saw how they just pushed Lugar around.
Republican Senators are weak kneed sissies.
Hagel is a joke.
I am not shocked at his line on this stuff.
The "rumors" about Bolton are turning out to be false.
The people who made the accusations....now won't come out and give any evidence....some have stated how they don't have any....and some have actually changed their stories.
Yet Hagel plays the patsy.
I am so tired of these Republicans who have no balls to just get to the nut cuttin'. Mealy-Mouthed losers who don't have the spine to tell the Democrats to STFU and sit down!!!
Damn if they haven't figured out that they should be in control.
You'd think the Republicans would realize at some point that they were the MAJORITY! but they aren't anymore they've splintered, the rats are simply staying unified. They won't accomplish anything, not like this!
I would spit on the feet of any Rep Senator. They are weak-minded men who deserve our contempt. The Reps in Congress repeatedly frustrate those who keep wishing day after day, week after week for one of this girlie men in the Senate to ACT LIKE A MAN. They are a pathetic lot. Bush needs to bring them all to the wood shed and kick them on the right path. We will lose Congress in 06 they way things are going. Amazing.
I'm so disgusted with the whole bunch of them. Republicans are either too stupid or too gutless to lead!!!!!!!!! They are an embarrassment!
It is hard to decide who is more dispicapble lying dishonest Democrats trying to block the nomination on poltical ground or moronic Republican Senators intent on betraying the President and giveng a cheap victory to the Democrats.
I am one failed nomination away from saying to the Republican office holders; 'a plague on both your houses', you will see me in the voting booth as soon as there is a real "conservative" party on the ballot not a day sooner.
I think we should elect a whole new Congress starting in 2006 of people we KNOW. Elect them as Favorite SONS or DAUGHTERS. Regular American People.
These FAT KATS of both parties have been selling us out for far to long. We need some regular ass busting people in the Congress to be AMERICAN!! Think American, and Pratice American.
This is the best thing I've heard all day. I have been pondering this idea for some time. The zillions of dollars spent on campaigns is nothing short of disgusting!
Think of all the chiillddrennn these fat cat millionaires could feed with what they would save on campaigns.(sarc)
Right on, but my solution is (since the dummies and rinos are going to sabotage any presidential appointment) for the president to let it be known that they can take their advise and consent and shove it.
Bush should announce that if Bolton is shot down then there will be no replacement appointment. He'll just leave the useless UN ambassador post vacant. Who needs it?
That goes for just about any other alphabet post in the government as well - FDA, FAA, ADnauseum. Any of those posts can function with an acting head or assistant head. Think of all the money saved too.
This won't work for the appointment of judges other than if the judgeships aren't filled there might be a public clamor for the senate to get a move on - but I even doubt that.
I've had it with the U.S. Senate - the most useless and unaccountable body ever devised by man, and the closest thing we have to a pampered aristocracy. They should have to run for office every two years! Who needs their advice and consent pontificating? Our forefathers envisioned a wise deliberative body. They never imagined that it would evolve to the point of having only one of those qualities. And yes, I am aware of the Grand Compromise.
What can a senator do that a representative can't for his constituents?
I'm ready for the nuclear option. Unicameralism.
Then we can go thermonuclear and do away with the Civil Service system and go back to the spoils system. At least we get to vote em in or out every 4 years.
Why not aim higher, my friend?
