Robert Byrd Attempts to Re-Write Filibuster History (Novak rips Byrd on hypocrisy)
The National Ledger ^ | April 21, 2005 | Robert Novak

Posted on 04/21/2005 5:39:17 AM PDT by Coastal

While re-inventing himself at age 87 in his 47th year as a senator, Robert C. Byrd has denied his clear past use of parliamentary maneuver to force majority rule in the Senate. That fits the broader phenomenon of Democrats reinventing the senatorial filibuster, historically notorious for protecting racial segregation, into a weapon of liberalism.

Byrd's use of a simple majority rule to make Senate rules fit the wishes of dominant Democrats during the 1970s and 1980s was revealed by legal scholars in January. It took Byrd's lawyers until March 20 for him to claim he did not do what he did. In fact, there is no doubt Byrd led the Democrats in championing majority rights when they had a majority.

still your problem to manage with whatever it takes from you or anyone you can influence to do the same.

Which is exactly what I do. More reason that I don't deserve to be painted with that broad brush any more than the conservative West Virginians on this forum do.

Huck wants the Republicans to exercise the Beorthnoth option.

I love Janice Rogers Brown. She's the pick of the litter, if you ask me. As far as I can tell the battlefield's been set for sometime. All they have to do now is do it.

Seems to me you've got it precisely backwards.

From the article:

Usually, however, liberals were aligned against the filibuster, the bulwark preventing civil rights legislation until 1957.

While whatever he means by 'liberals' may have opposed the filibusters of civil rights legislation, it was democrats who conducted them.

That step will take place this very afternoon when Judge Brown is voted out of Committee and onto the Senate floor.

That's what I'm talking about. Today is good. That's all I am saying is it's time to move already.

You still have my condolences (as do the rest of FReepers who demonRATs doing most of their representations in DC)...but I would move given your representation in Washington!

Personally, here in Texas, I write three or four letters per incident when our RINO, Kay Bailey Hutchinson, drifts her "moderate butt" to the LEFT.

If you need more stamps, or more bandwidth for emails, I suggest you organize a 'bake sale' and a posse of volunteers - BUT you folks in Illinois got a serious problem in DC.

Explanation of the "Beorthnoth option":

However, in reaction to the "Wyatt Earp" thoughts on fair fighting that have been expressed here, I would like to quote what Tolkien himself said on the topic. This is from The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son, 'Beorhtnoth's Death'; it describes the reaction of a nobleman to a battle situation which seemed to favor his side: The Northmen and the English were thus separated by an arm of the river; filled by the incoming tide, it could only be crossed by a 'bridge' or causeway, difficult to force in the face of a determined defence. The defence was resolute. But the vikings knew, or so it would seem, what manner of man they had to deal with: they asked for leave to cross the ford, so that a fair fight could be joined. Beorhtnoth accepted the challenge and allowed them to cross. This act of pride and misplaced chivalry (bolding mine) proved fatal. Beorthnoth was slain and the English routed; but the duke's household... fought on, untill they all fell dead beside their lord.

Huck: Talk talk talk talk talk. Until the GOP actually smacks down these liars, it's all just talk. We don't need another column to tell us the liberals are liars. We know that already. We need someone to actually do something about it besides talk.

The good Congressman already explained why we're waiting on the other side of the causeway, Huck.

You counsel action NOW, to incite the simples on our side. The wise warrior waits.

It's no comfort but we are not alone. New York comes to mind. Cosevatives there have to live with the Hillary/Schumer combo.

Why don't us Republicans insist on
--> real filibusters only <--
for nominations?

By that I mean, a 'stand up and talk' filibustter,
not this 'threat to oppose unanimous-consent'
type of crap.

In the story, the so-called "wise warrior" waited, let them cross, and lost.

Did you see this?

Where did I blame the GOP for the mess?

You're correct, I neglected to answer your question. In the above post, you did not blame the GOP for this mess.

You should take up "reading for comprehension" one of these days. It's fun, and easy!

Your act wears thin.

Go back to your Hobbit fantasies, Beowulf.

Winston Churchill recounts this very same story in his History of the English Speaking Peoples. Don't know, but I suspect it is true and NOT part of Tolkins fiction books.

It's from Beowulf, the old nordic poem. But the belligerent poster posted Tolkien's remarks on the passage, hence my Hobbit reference.

No, it's not. As I told you earlier, Huck, you should take up "reading for comprehension". But you're not really here for that, are you, Huck? I know the smell of your posts, having had vast experience with the type over the years here at Free Republic.

kgdallen - the snippet I posted is about a short story written by Tolkien called The Homecoming of Beorthnoth, Beorthelm's Son. Huck, the semiliterate dissembler, appears to believe that Tolkien, a reknowned historical linguist and scholar, was "just about hobbits". Huck is, of course, wrong - on this as well as many other things.

*chuckle* Tolkien actually caught some crap from his fellow-scholars when his Lord Of The Rings became an unintended best-seller.

Huck wants us to emulate Beorthnoth and invite the Democommies across the causeway "for a fair fight". I prefer to keep the poisonous snakes at arm's length, myself. ;-)
