ATLANTA, Ga. — Investigators blame last month’s deadly Atlanta courthouse shooting on a series of mistakes and missteps. But some affirmative action critics say it boils down to the fact that there was a woman deputy escorting accused gunman Brian Nichols.
“You have a female officer who is about 5 feet 2 inches tall, versus a criminal in this case — a former linebacker who is 6 feet tall,” said John Lott, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, a think tank in Washington.
Those in favor of affirmative action — the policy of hiring and recruiting with the intent of eliminating effects of past discrimination or preventing discrimination altogether — say the practice shouldn’t get the blame for the March 11 shooting rampage at Fulton County Superior Court in Atlanta.
“Affirmative action certainly cannot be the scapegoat for sloppy procedures or for not being attentive,” said Bob Ethridge of the American Association for Affirmative Action. “A lot of different things went wrong.”
Nichols, about to face a retrial for rape and other offenses, allegedly overpowered the female deputy escorting him to court. With her gun, police say Nichols shot the judge who was to preside over his trial, the court reporter, another sheriff’s deputy in his path as he fled and a U.S. customs agent who was working on his home in a nearby suburb.

I see it as a victory against the PC liberal media/Democrats that the question is even raised. Can you imagine someone declaring such heresy in 1994?
Minimum standards are placed on some jobs for a reason. In the case of police officers there used to be a minimum height and weight requirement. Affirmative Action Lowered these standards for women and blacks because they could not meet their quotas of women and blacks without lowering them.
Did this cause the incident in Atlanta, Who knows. Its pretty obvious this criminal knew he could take this Grandmother and he did. He may not have been so willing to take on a man his own height and weight.
The other day I watched a Firefighters Rodeo, Firefighters were required to run this course where they used an axe, carried a hose, ran up stairs and did other things. Strenuous things. there was a mans contest and a womans contest. Why? Are they paid differentally? If the women cant compete with the men, and they obviously cant, Why are they working in the Fire Department? Affirmative Action?
Political correctness? Probably a little of both. But when someone gets killed it matters.
One thing to keep in mind: The Rhode Island police officer who was overpowered and killed with his own gun last week.

This kind of thing has happened many, many times and sadly will continue to happen. These two cases are FAR from unique occurrences.

all of my life i remember police or guards being taken by surprise, and being captive or killed by their own weapons.

that's a problem with the internet.
i still think there's a valid question about why they let that lady sheriff's officer alone with this guy. apparently he had become a favorite of both law enforcement and the legal community, in effect disarming them with his personality.
on the other hand, some one on this forum, who lives in atlanta, said that the sheriff's dept there has some problems.
We definitely agree on that. They never should have assigned only one deputy to handle someone like Nichols. I hope they learned, but it's terrible that it cost lives for them to learn this.
Keep,in mind that "affirmative" action is being inflicted on our schools as well. Do you want a surgeon who was passed thru school via affirmative action? If we lower the standards of physical performance are we lowering the standards of intellectual performance as well? Will you bet your life on it?
IIRC there was supposed to be another officer there. He begged off at the last minute.
Historically violent offender, large buff guy, uncontrolled area, felony charges.
Three officers when the cuffs come off, minimum.
