Teacher Charged With Molesting Student Nearly 100 Times

POSTED: 6:47 am EDT April 25, 2005 UPDATED: 8:11 am EDT April 25, 2005

COCOA, Fla. -- Hundreds of students and teachers at Endeavour Elementary School in Brevard County are walking on campus Monday for the first time since learning of disturbing allegations against an instructor.

Cocoa police arrested a veteran teacher over the weekend and charged him with molesting a student nearly 100 times.

Daniel Cliatt, 29, is accused of a crime so heinous, for his first appearance deputies dressed him in a bulletproof vest. Wearing the vest with his hands shackled in front of him, Cliatt appeared before a judge for the first time Sunday, when he answered the judge's questions.

Cliatt is accused of raping a 13-year-old repeatedly after school, at school, every day for months.

Cocoa police say the 29-year-old, 360-pound sixth grade teacher started by showing the boy pornography, then moved to sex acts, almost 100 of them. That didn't stop until, police say, another teacher walked into Cliatt's classroom Friday after school.

"At first, she walked in and didn't know what she was seeing. But she ran out and grabbed a supervisor," explained Detective Barbara Matthews, Cocoa Police Department.

Cliatt has been a teacher at Endeavour Elementary School for five years and he's worked there for 10. The school district is already planning a termination hearing.

"We have been very, very cooperative. We've spent a lot of time with the Cocoa Police Department in order to assist them in this investigation," said Sara Stern, Brevard County School District.

Cliatt is a 2000 graduate of Rollins College. He's been at Endeavour Elementary School for 10 years, first as a teacher's assistant, then as a second grade teacher. He most recently taught the sixth grade. Cliatt was in charge of 20 students.

According to the Brevard County School District, Cliatt passed every FBI and FDLE background check.

THIS!! Is why we need to stop this "We all all the same, tolerance BS" One of the biggest reasons. Parents teach their kids to beware of people who make them feel uncomfortable, or even tough them inappropriately, then they go to school and are taught it they might try it, they might like it! That any sexual behavior is normal and healthy, and they even tell boys they might feel more comfortable with an older male.

This was my biggest problem with the whole sponge bob video, teaching kids their parents are wrong, and we are bigots if we are "afraid" of people different from us. It's making kids less wary of these perverts! And it MUST stop.

The teacher shouldn't be teaching, and should be strung up, but we ALSO must stop teaching these deviant behaviors as "normal"

Thank you, John O, for sharing your insight. Sons need their fathers (and daughters need their fathers too). What percentage of pedophiles have themselves been abused, would you think?

The school district is already planning a termination hearing.

like, exactly WHAT kind of termination? How about immediate? How about the kind you get from flying lead?

Criminy.

I'd hazard a guess and say "all". Various reports put the percentage of homosexuals who have been abused at somewhere near 95%. Once the line of decent behavior has been breached what is to prevent it from being broken again?

If they are attracted to boys but marry women are those men considered homosexual or just pedophiles?

"Just pedophiles" implies any child will do, when the fact is that most pedophiles have a definite preference for one sex over the other. Also, this is not really pedophilia, as the child is adolescent.

So I'd say he's a homosexual who likes adolescent boys.

There are plenty of married homosexuals with families out there. Functioning as a heterosexual doesn't make you one, if what really floats your boat is thoughts of, or sex with, other males.

Great post. Many younger parents need to read this, and also the book on how to recruit-proof their children.

Well now there might be extenuating circumstances, such as that little bully tricked or even forced the teacher into such acts. We cannot be irrational and shoot the SOB.

Well, perhaps that WAS a little harsh of me way back when. That was during the Schiavo thing, though, and I had just finished reading up on Judge Felos. I plead temporary insanity.

Hey, Mon! NEA says he's got RIGHTS

I can think of only 5 that apply:

1. The right to remain silent and refuse to answer questions.
2. The right to consult an attorney before speaking to the police.
3. The right to have an attorney present during questioning now or in the future.
4. If he cannot afford an attorney, the right to have one appointed before any questioning.
5. The right to stop answering at any time until an attorney is present.

"Was this kid so badly intmidated or brainwashed that he just put up with it ?"

I'm guessing that he's grown up being taught all about the importance of tolerance and that homosexuality is not only normal, but healthy.
