"Seems to me it is an example of the cordial and kind mannerisms of GWB." This is not the image American males want to see of their president. That should have tactfully been explained to the prince. Honestly could you imagine Reagan, Rumsfeld or even Condi allowing such a public display of affection?

You know, if I was Clinton the conservative press and talk show hosts would have really made fun of this for about the next 6 months. But since 9/11 changed everything and if you don't support me you don't support the troops, well, I can get by with most anything.

Okay, but don't ever hug George and make up. He might try to slip you the tongue.

These threads are good for picking out trolls, juveniles, and some mindset's on FR.
Very consistent so far.

No wonder he went soft on civil unions!
To: Uncledave
Of course I have soft hands Abdullah, they go hand in hand with my soft stance on border security.

I doubt it. Methinks Kerry would have showed public distance, and might have even chilled the relationship with the Saudis. But the State Department would still be dominating the real intent and sustaining power behind the transactions. As it stands today, the administration has a chilly relationship with State, which is suggestive of positive changes. I'm hoping this is all about Realpolitik. The royalty over there have got to be scared out of their wits by the civil war that's going on. Even if they helped set the stage for it with their global support for fundamentalism, they have to know that 9/11 was just another shot in their own civil war. We can only hope that W and his advisers are taking all of this into consideration. When you think about it, Iraq was more of an enemy to the Kingdom than the Israelis were. That's got to hurt, but somehow we keep coming through for the family. Maybe it's time for them to see the light, and who better to explain it than a friend?

Exactly.
I don't think we should make fun of customs of other countries.
President Bush is accomodating the Arab custom of his guest.
That is a sign of respect towards your guest and there is nothing wrong with it.
I am sure there are things that we do here, which look peculiar in other cultures.

Observing the custom of your guest is a sign of respect.
Precisely because we are a powerful nation, we can afford to be polite to our guests, and not lose a thing by it.

It not only an Arab custom. It's also a custom in Russia and E. Europe -- I don't know whether it's a cultural thing, or was part of the communist custom, but I saw heads of states give hearty hugs to each other and kiss both cheeks of the other.

It's also a custom in Russia That's true. ....but we don't see Bush playing kissy-face with Pooty-Poot. GWB kissing Saudi ass/face is despicable.

I love you, you love me
We're a great big family.
With a great big hug
and a kiss from me to you
Won't you say you love me to!
