WASHINGTON Iran is not only covertly developing nuclear weapons, it is already testing ballistic missiles specifically designed to destroy Americas technical infrastructure, effectively neutralizing the worlds lone superpower, say U.S. intelligence sources, top scientists and western missile industry experts.
The radical Shiite regime has conducted successful tests to determine if its Shahab-3 ballistic missiles, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, can be detonated by a remote-control device while still in high-altitude flight.
Scientists, including President Reagans top science adviser, William R. Graham, say there is no other explanation for such tests than preparation for the deployment of electromagnetic pulse weapons even one of which could knock out Americas critical electrical and technological infrastructure, effectively sending the continental U.S. back to the 19th century with a recovery time of months or years.
Iran will have that capability at least theoretically as soon as it has one nuclear bomb ready to arm such a missile. North Korea, a strategic ally of Iran, already boasts such capability.

Good question....
Wonder what our response would be to such an attack?
Bring it on, I unplugged my toaster and started barbecue!
badaBumBUm!
No. First of all, no one knows if EMP at 100,000 feet or above will really work...weather is a big factor. Below that it doesn't matter. Its all theoritical...Solution? Kill the Mullahs...then send McDonalds and Coke...Peace reigns.
...and dust off old Collins S-line
Look at the bright side, if an EMP weapon took out our technical infrastructure, we wouldn't have to listen to the MSM b&tch and moan about the radioactive ash heap where Iran used to be.
The mullahs have been watching too much "24".
>How was Iran able to develop one of these EPW's, Joe?
The EPW as you call it is just a nuclear bomb detonated at least several hundred miles high.
They want one? Let's give them one. Detonate it at 50,000 feet so they know what they are getting.
"meow, meow, meow, meow"
Yeah, and your Morse code too! ;-)

Torches and Pitchforks, if there was any retaliation at all.
I would be quite slow but it wouldn't take long to get it back.
ditty dumm dumm ditty

Burnt out electronics from New Zealand to Hawaii. That was when transistors were uncommon.
lol, great point. Even if they could knock out a lot of our commerical infrastructure. Our boomers would figure out what happened, and bye bye Mullah pie....
No elecktricks, no TV, no MSM, RAT children and women hit hardest. Then unobstructed by PC, militias will rise from the electrons and finish off the Ahmeds.
Right. Duh! I need to go to bed.
dat you, Maurice?
Right. I read this in Popular Mechanics, I believe. But to pull this off will mean that this bomb will have to reach close proximity to the U.S., and detonated high in the atmosphere.
Nukes give off tons of radiation, so getting this within our borders will be quite an accomplishment.
But if they do, it will cause havoc on a grand scale.

I like your Morris. A cat to be reckoned with....
Take every politician that ever voted against SDI (and its variants) and stone them to death in the public square. </dreaming>
Realistically, isolated military bases in Iran would start to glow while population centers would be untouched. We would then ask for the people of Iran to turn over their leaders or face the same fate as the Taliban. The youth of Iran, realizing they couldn't find any 2,000,000 sunblock, comply.
A Kerry administration would either sit whimpering in the corner or lash out and indiscriminately nuke a few population centers with little regard for fallout over friendly countries. World reaction is bad and any aid to the US is predicated on unilateral disarmament. Kerry declares we'll disarm so the rest of the world won't hate us so. The Republican Senate, fearing a RAT rules change any time in the next century, passes the treaty.
Someday, we may deeply regret not having taken them out.
So are we up to 4 or 5 postings of this? I've lost count.
While that's a plausible scenario, I believe that the culprit will be 10,000 feet in the air on his way back to Yamamastan when this is detonated. And the financial blow and the structural damage to our electric grids will make it seem like the United States was wiped off the map, even if the bomb doesn't kill one American.

Recovery time of weeks in critical industries, months in the cities, and years in the country side and less critical areas.
I suspect that we are more prepared for this kind of attack than we are led to believe. Iran will be in for a big surprise if they try this method of attack. We might be reduced to 19th and early 20th century for a short while... But Iran would be a smoking ruin without even stone age technology to ease their lives.
There is so much BS in his article it gives me a headache to read it.

This is only #3.
In my humble opinion we should tell ALL middleeastern countries that if we are attacked we will not know for positive who is responsible so we will attack all of you. It is strongly suggested that you stop the terrorists in your respective countries.
Recall that a great deal of our military equipment was build to survive a nuclear first-strike from the Soviets and respond afterwards.
If Iraq TRIED that (our SSD might could knock it down) then be forwarned: Our MILITARY is EMP-hardened.
Indeed, I was stationed at Minot AFB when the one and only ABM system was operational. It was designed to protect Minot and Grand Forks bases and missile fields. I was the base frequency manager and read many of the classified reports on the EMP effects. I could tell you about them but then I'd have to kill you, (Top Gun was on the Dish!)
EMP wouldn't effect SLBMs. Once the Iranians shot their wad we would turn that country into sheet glass! Maybe a warning shot across their bow might be in order!
And especially you, France.
Holy crap! That means we'll have to watch TV by candlelight!
;-)
World Nut Daily alert!
First punch usually wins a fight.
That James bond repeat was just on tv last week! Destroy silicone valley, and bring the USA to it's knees.....
an emp bomb is quite far fetched. Besides, the USA isn't all linked to one central location which controls the whole country, except in Hollywood movies.
I expect to see this sort of thing seriously discussed at DU, not here.
I'm also quite sure my powerbar is EMP proof, it said so in the warranty.
You've got that right.
world net daily is no longer considered to be a credible source.
"Then unobstructed by PC, militias will rise from the electrons and finish off the Ahmeds."
...and all pacifists so that no groceries or any other resources are wasted keeping them alive.
