I'm from Boston, Last year I spent a month of job training about 15 miles outside of Chicago. I couldn't believe how many Mexicans and Mexican restaurants I saw up there. Especially being so far away from Mexico and all. A local explained to me That it's easier for them to get to Canada and sneek in that way. I don't know how true that is though..Anybody know?

Untrue. There has been a large Mexican community in Chicago for decades. Probably came to work in industry and meatpacking. They used to be mostly legal.

First Mexicans to come up to Chicago were recruited by the railroads and meat packing firms after restrictions on Eastern and Southern European immigration were put into place by congress. Since there were no such restrictions for immigrants from Mexico at the time, the railroads and meat packers recruited Mexicans as well as blacks from the south.

I should have added that this happenned in the 1920s. There has been a large Mexican presence in Chicago since that time.

Subject: Telemundo interview re: my bogus matriculas
To: mcri@sbcglobal.net

Spent nearly an hour with Telemundo reporter Enrique Garcia Fuentes discussing my "matriculas" that appear on our web site. This reporter has been here before, and I trust him. He was really taken aback by my ability to get two of these cards and wondered if I was worried about getting into trouble for having them. I told him it was silly to suggest I was guilty of a crime when the federal and certain state and local governments apparently don't mind that a foreign government (on our soil) is issuing ID to its nationals it knows are here illegally.

He wanted to know what the consequences are issuing consular cards to illegals, and I said they represent an attack on our sovereignty and circumvention of our immigration laws. And those local governments that accept the matricula are undermining the rule of law as well.

"You know I'm going to show your matriculas to the Mexican Consulate," he said. I said it was also OK to show them to Vicente Fox.

I think it hilarious that of all the various media outlets in the Chicago area only a Hispanic TV network thinks my matriculas are newsworthy.

But the best part of this interview came at the end when I again reiterated that this issue is not about race but the rule of law. He looked me square in the eyes and said, "I do not believe that you are a racist." As I said, he's been in my home before and I feel comfortable around him.
