This is the only internet survey of political views based on real opinion poll data. We can tell you not only where your views lie, but how they compare to the views of the rest of the British population.
This is not a "how to vote" site, but we will show you which party's supporters have views most like your own.
(You can read some more information about this survey on my(Chris Lightfoot's) web log.)
Heh. Not a shocker, I'm significantly more conservative then the average Brit;
89.9% are significantly to your left
9.6% have views about the same as yours
0.5% are significantly to your right
You know what is funny though? I bet you those people taking this survey who are the inverse of me politically are mostly answering "Centre" as their self-proclaimed position.
I was a bit higher, but more to the left.
This table shows an overview of how the rest of the population compares to you:
| More rehabilitationist, internationalist | About the same | More punitive, isolationist | |
|---|---|---|---|
| More free-market, pro-war | 2.3% | 0.7% | 0.1% |
| About the same | 17.0% | 3.5% | 0.5% |
| More socialist, anti-war | 61.1% | 13.5% | 1.5% |
Here we compare your answers to those given by readers of a number of well-known newspapers.
| Significantly to your left |
About the same | Significantly to your right |
|
|---|---|---|---|
| The Sun | 75.5% | 22.8% | 1.7% |
| The Mirror / Daily Record | 86.3% | 13.3% | 0.4% |
| The Daily Mail / The Scottish Daily Mail | 76.1% | 22.3% | 1.5% |
| The Express | 81.9% | 17.9% | 0.2% |
| The Daily Star / The Daily Star of Scotland | 63.5% | 36.5% | 0.0% |
| The Guardian | 80.2% | 17.2% | 2.6% |
| The Independent | 79.4% | 18.2% | 2.4% |
| The Times | 53.1% | 34.1% | 12.8% |
| The Daily Telegraph | 50.7% | 33.3% | 16.0% |
Hey, we're kindred spirits LOL.
* 92.7% are significantly to your left * 7.0% have views about the same as yours * 0.3% are significantly to your right
Your position on this axis is 4.2 You are likely to be fairly punitive and isolationist.
Economics, etc
Your position on this axis is 3.6 You are likely to be very free-market and pro-war.
Thanks for a great find. Someone should get this webdesigner to set up something like this for the US. I'd love to see the LAtimes readers vs the WAtimes readers.
"The government is mostly interested in helping itself, not ordinary people." My answer: (strongly agree)
This is the question the brits will need to understand to fix their country.
However, on a lighter note, this test enabled me to discovered a potential problem:
Of women...
100.0% are significantly to your left
0.0% have views about the same as yours
0.0% are significantly to your right
LOL!
England is lost.
I scored a 2.8 in Crime and Punishment and Internationalism, which the poll claims means that I am "slightly punitive and isolationist" (funny, I thought that I was a save-the-earth Neo-Con).
Scored a 4.6 in Economics, etc., which means that I am "Very free-market and pro-war" (at least they got that one right).
If the table of how the "rest of the population" compares to me is at all representative of the opinions of the British, then their country is lost (75% are "more socialist"? WTH?).
Page two said that I was "slightly" Right of Center and then the next page told me in graph after graph how much of an "extreme right winger" I am, which will come as a surprise to the guys I was just arguing with on another thread who thought I was a Godless homo-leftie or something...Lol!
RE: "England is lost."
My thoughts exactly. Whadda mean 98% of the "overall" British population is significantly to the left of me on Iraq, etc. What is wrong with these people?!
yay! I win!
Compared to the whole population...
99.8% are significantly to your left
0.2% have views about the same as yours
0.0% are significantly to your right
It's looking like the UKIP for me, even though I'm completely to the right of all of them too.
The newspaper rankings - particularly surprising, since The Daily Mail is normally thought of as having the the most right-wing readership of the major dailies. Also the Sun and Express readership appear from this to be relatively further left than one would expect. Closest to you (but not very close) appears to be The Daily Star - a paper which I must confess I've never looked at in my life!
I wonder if there will be a little cloud of FReepers in the upper right this time tomorrow.
According to their stats, if I lived in England I would be to the right of almost everyone.
Maybe I'd try to gather up some friends and colleagues, charter a few vessels, and try to sail to some other shore where we can enjoy freedom from... oh... nevermind.
This is a great quiz which provided quite a bit of interesting detail about my answers at the end. Yeah the British seem to be firmly indoctrinated into the liberal fold unfortunately.
Regards, Ivan
Compared to the whole population...

Crime and punishment, internationalism
Your position on this axis is 1.8
You are likely to be slightly punitive and isolationist.
Economics, etc
Your position on this axis is 5.2
You are likely to be very free-market and pro-war.
Not a shocker.
"According to their stats, if I lived in England I would be to the right of almost everyone."
Yeah me too. That's what we get for believing in this freedom thing.
Oh dear, you're just slightly to the right of me. I about died laughing at the analysis.
LOL, Ivan I'm still laughing. You belong over here with us. Either that or we all need to move to Jolly Old for a year or so right before the next elections. Can you imagine the shock?
Mine looked exactly like that.
I didn't consider their important axis as very important. On their unimportant axis:
Compared to the whole population...
* 99.8% are significantly to your left
* 0.2% have views about the same as yours
* 0.0% are significantly to your right
I noticed as I was reading all these responses that most of us ended up in the same area. I was surprised by that because I've always thought that I'm quite a bit to the right of most people at FR.
To this naturalized New Zealander I'm not surprisingly extremely right-wing by this standard as well. My figures look like this (I assume I will probably live in London if I have a chance of living in Britain):
Remember a British conservative once said of you people: "But then your Democrats are probably more right-wing than many British Conservatives. The joke here is that the American right is just to the left of Genghis Khan. ;-)"

No wonder why we all look rabid right to them.
Here we compare your answers to those given by readers of a number of well-known newspapers.

Agreed. One of the chief characteristics of British society is that British people are very deferential to the establishment, and the establishment's political orientation is more resistant to change than most countries of the world. This creates an illusion that Britain is a more conservative country and its people have more sense. You can see this among Oxbridge professors - it is still sort of easier to find a non-leftist Humanities (Arts) professor at Oxford than Ivy League, but the gap is rapidly closing not because the Ivy League opens up to non-leftists, but because Oxbridge are becoming more "Ivy League-ized".
Unfortunately I see the reality as this: leftism is always there, but its influence on British establishment is more gradual so there is a "time lag" between the leftist crests of other countries of the world and Britain. Once the establishment "sees the light" then a wholescale migration to the left occurs (I feel that the 1960s cultural leftism only starts to become significant in Britain over the past decade, long after similar ravages on America, New Zealand, Germany, etc) and once this leftist move is complete it will be harder to eradicate leftism from British society than many countries of the world.
Britain ping! See this article from Steyn:

Hmm, interesting website!
Ah, but to us, blue is Conservative and red is Labour.
I'm a freemarket, prowar, hanging/flogging, eurosceptic!
Apparently, there ARE no British women to the right of me... which is fine by me, because that's the hand I "draw" with ;o)
Sissy!
;o>
They wouldn't want me either. 0% to the right of me, LOL!
HA! You're to the left of me, Cacique! http://www.alarmingnews.com/archives/002941.html
