ANNAPOLIS -- Six weeks into Kweisi Mfume's campaign for the U.S. Senate, Democrats here and nationally believe the former congressman from Baltimore is being shoved aside or written off by powerful forces within the state party.
Many Maryland Democrats -- black and white -- are shying away from Mfume's candidacy and privately criticizing his campaign for not being well-organized.
Critics say his troubled childhood as a street hustler in Baltimore, followed by controversial new allegations about his tenure as the president of the national NAACP, will make him a liability in a statewide campaign.
On Thursday, The Washington Post reported that a confidential NAACP report detailed allegations that Mfume gave raises and promotions to women with whom he had close personal relationships while he was president of the civil rights organization.
Mfume's supporters noted the story broke one day after U.S. Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin of Baltimore announced his candidacy for the Senate. They said the timing is indicative of the efforts to sink Mfume's campaign.

Someone stuck a knife in Frizzle's back, and I think the finger prints lead back to Hillary or the DNC.
They are full of sh*t! The reason he is given the cold shoulder is because he DARED to suggest a more moderate approach to dealing with the President and the Republicans.
If your are a Democrat and Black, you better be a "House Black."
Hillary? I think it has more to do with Julian Bond. JB has a MUCH bigger axe to grind.
This is good. Split the dims. Blood bath in the primaries. Mfume vs Cardin. Dims long-knives will clear the way for Cardin. Low dim turnout in the general elections will pave the way for Erlich (?) or who ever is the Republican candidate. Roll the titles.
Whenever Rush Limbaugh mention's Kweisi Mfume by name, he always includes a comment along these lines: "In a statement yesterday, Kweisi Mfume (no relation to South African president Thabo Mbeki, folks) said . . . etc., etc.)" LOL.
BTW wazza Frizzle?
Cardin is Jewish..and if Kwaisi's supporters spin this as "jewish conspiracy" thing..it's gonna get very ugly in MD Dem, circles. Black anti-semitism in the inner cities is not far beneath the surface..
Poor Pee Wee is having a very Gray day.
Frizzell Gray. His real name.
Frizzell "Pee Wee" Gray is Mfume real name.
For a Democrat? I thought those things would be career enhancers!
This is a joke, right? Since when has being a law violator, drug abuser, or a white hater ever stopped a black from being elected by blacks?
"At the end of the day, if there are no deliverables, African Americans will look elsewhere,"
I hope that elsewhere is Michael Steele, MD's 1st black
Lt. Governor and a republican. That would Maryland democrats a bad case of diaper rash. 1st a republican governor (Erlich) in 2002, then a Republican Senator in 2006. If Steele chooses to run for Senator, he will get national backing/funding from the republican party.
Woh! I thought my real handle was bad.
Being stuck with a stupid name at birth is one thing. Changing it to something even sillier is quite another.
Kwesie's real name is Frizzel Grey
Not to mention those out of wedlock kids...
He just makes people Kwesi..
Not to mention the number of illegitimate children he fathered with several different women. That's something that has made Bill Clinton jealous.
Beneath the surface?
Its out in the open.
Its the most vile forms of anti-semetism that even college professors would not dare say out loud.
Nuh uh! Get out!!
Today's Washington Times has a story on Michael Steele and the possibility of his seeking the Republican nomination for this Senate seat. You can read it on line, it is in the regional section. I saw some of an interview with Mr. Steele on C-Span and I was really impressed. I think he'd be a great candidate.
Kweisi sounds like a name chosen after hearing Elmer Fudd sing that Patsy Cline song.
"It was a way to identity myself and my children and their children from that point on," he says, "because it was something I could explain. It had reason and rhyme. It made sense and even if it didnt make sense, at least there was a way to talk about it as a family name and why it was chosen. It was part of my whole process to remake or reengineer my life at that time to reidentify myself and to give myself focus for the future."
Oh puh-lease. Get over yourself Pee Wee.
Michael Steele is on the republican fast track. He gave a very good speech during the republican convention. He also was selected by Pres. Bush to be a member of the 5 person delegation to be present at Pope Benedict's 1st mass.
Not bad for a lowly Lt. Governor.
I thought "that white guy" was Julian Bond.?. or Tony Brown even.. cause many blacks are no blacker than I am..
We have to pull for queazy no se fume. This guy will be the easist to beat. Steele would beat him and that seat would be ours. The rats don't want queazy because they know he will be campaigning with a bag of shiite under each arm.
A bag of shiite under each arm projects some Mfumes and makes me Kwiesi..
