A day in the life of President & Mrs. Bush (5/1/05): photos of the roast

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady attended Sunday morning church services at St. Johns, and were spending a quiet day at the White House.

TRANSCRIPT OF THE DAY: While I could not find an official transcript of the First Lady's remarks last night, I didi find the next best thing by cobbling together several news reports.

First Lady Laura Bush has stolen the show with a surprise comedy routine that teases her husband President George W Bush.

The performance at a dinner honouring award-winning journalists brought a standing ovation from the audience -- that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood.

The president pretended to start a planned a speech last night at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy. "Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."

GWB sat down and Laura proceeded to note that he is "usually in bed by now," and said she told him recently, "If you really want to end tyranny in the world you're going to have to stay up later." She outlined a typical evening: "Nine o'clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I'm watching Desperate Housewives." Comedic pause. "With Lynne Cheney." Comedic pause. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife."

The First Lady went on to quip that one night she went out to Chippendales, a male strip bar, with Lynne Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and top Bush aide Karen Hughes.

"I wouldn't even mention it, except (Supreme Court Justices) Ruth Ginsberg and Sandra Day O'Connor saw us there," she said. "I won't tell you what happened. But Lynne's secret service code name is now 'dollar bill'."

Laura Bush also joked about the president's mother Barbara Bush. "People think she's a sweet grandmotherly aunt Bea type. She's actually more like (fictional Mafia capo) Don Corleone."

She said that her husband actually knew little about ranching when they bought their ranch in Crawford, Texas.

"I'm proud of George. He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year, when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse," she said.

The president now often spends time at the ranch clearing brush and cutting trails. "George's answer to any problem at the ranch is to cut it down with a chainsaw. Which I think is why he and Cheney and Rumsfeld get along so well."

Absolutely nobody can look at and listen to Laura and believe that she is a desperate housewife. That is why it was such a total joke.

See there, it's all in how you take it. I thought the Chippendales part was the funniest part of her whole routine. The thought of those four women at a Chippendales, and of Lynne Cheney's new nickname being 'dollar bill' was just hysterically funny to me.

I know that no one believes she is a desperate housewife, and I thought most of her Desperate Housewife take was quite funny. It was just that one statement about 'you can take him' that got to me a little bit.

But I thought her routine and the rest of the ribbing was very, very funny. The chain saw stuff was just hysterical. Laura is a great comedienne, with a finely tuned sense of humor.

Much appreicated! I love crumpets (scones too). We spent our honeymoon, over 3 weeks, all over the UK and Ireland. That was the late '70s and I have not found a decent scone back in here the US yet.

As ya' know I could care less what the left thinks; however, that doesn't mean I want someone I care about purposely demeaned at one of their functions!

BTW: The comments made ME wince . . . and if they made ME wince I can only imagine what they did for some others.

At any rate, I'm moving on . . . the President's leaving for his international trip later this week; should make for some wonderful photos!

Me, too! What a funny "thought picture" that made for me.

While I can see the point of people not liking the performance because of the content, I had no problem with it. I laughed out loud all the way through when I was given the link to listen to.

I like the look on her face when she says something funny -totally mischievious!

She'd definitely be someone I would love to have lunch with, we'd have a great time.

Yes, she really gets a wicked little gleam in her eye when she's about to let one loose, doesn't she?

Ya' know, the comments to me from last night and tonight (and no Ohio I'm not talking about you), coupled with the basic nastiness of this forum (FreeRepublic) toward the President has pushed me toward a decision I've been contemplating for awhile.

Consider this my OPUS . . . good night and good bye.

Yep I agree about Lynn Cheney's new SS Code Name as Dollar Bill being the funniest line. However I must admit I've never watched Desperate Housewives so my basis of comparison is entirely lacking on that element. I don't intend to watch it either.. :^)

Wolfstar! Great pix tonight, dear. I thought the roast was hilarious. It would be pretty darned hard to stand up and actually be funny for 7 minutes using all -G- rated material. THEN the press would have blasted the First Lady for being boring and trying to hard to be funny.

Nope, she floated some -PG- stuff and pulled it off, especially with a crowd who'd love nothing more than to have reason to slam and ridicule her.

I can't stick around tonight, I would have been here earlier but when we returned home from being out, we realized we'd left some belongings and had to turn around and go all the way back to retrieve them. Just getting home now, must catch up on the threads. 'Night all!
