PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady attended Sunday morning church services at St. Johns, and were spending a quiet day at the White House.
TRANSCRIPT OF THE DAY: While I could not find an official transcript of the First Lady's remarks last night, I didi find the next best thing by cobbling together several news reports.
First Lady Laura Bush has stolen the show with a surprise comedy routine that teases her husband President George W Bush.
The performance at a dinner honouring award-winning journalists brought a standing ovation from the audience -- that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood.
The president pretended to start a planned a speech last night at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy. "Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."
GWB sat down and Laura proceeded to note that he is "usually in bed by now," and said she told him recently, "If you really want to end tyranny in the world you're going to have to stay up later." She outlined a typical evening: "Nine o'clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I'm watching Desperate Housewives." Comedic pause. "With Lynne Cheney." Comedic pause. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife."
The First Lady went on to quip that one night she went out to Chippendales, a male strip bar, with Lynne Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and top Bush aide Karen Hughes.
"I wouldn't even mention it, except (Supreme Court Justices) Ruth Ginsberg and Sandra Day O'Connor saw us there," she said. "I won't tell you what happened. But Lynne's secret service code name is now 'dollar bill'."
Laura Bush also joked about the president's mother Barbara Bush. "People think she's a sweet grandmotherly aunt Bea type. She's actually more like (fictional Mafia capo) Don Corleone."
She said that her husband actually knew little about ranching when they bought their ranch in Crawford, Texas.
"I'm proud of George. He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year, when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse," she said.
The president now often spends time at the ranch clearing brush and cutting trails. "George's answer to any problem at the ranch is to cut it down with a chainsaw. Which I think is why he and Cheney and Rumsfeld get along so well."
Over on CNN, their reporterette, Dana Bash, was trying oh-so-hard to diminish the First Lady. To those Leftists, women like Laura Bush are freaks, because they love their husbands rather than compete with them.

Hi, Wolfstar. Someone gave me a link to the Correspondent's Dinner and I'll watch it online.
The First Lady is wearing a beautiful shawl or scarf in some of the pictures; she's worn it before and it's just gorgeous.
Your pictures and comments are great.
The First Lady was awesome last night. I just hope none of the naysayers from the other threads about last night come on this one and rain on your party.
4, 6, 9, 11, 15 and 18! (But 4 is my favorite!)
"She also told the crowd she loves her George."
It's wonderful to have two such people in the Whitehouse. You look at the pictures and you can just see the love and respect they have for each other all over their faces. They set the best of examples for our children on what a marriage should be.
I'm glad you're reading good reports about the First Couple. But you just know it is making them grind their teeth to have to do it! heh-heh!
As for H......! She is just so much history! Laura makes her look like a slacker! And Laura is prettier, too!
All of those items going back to Pottery Barn...lol!
Thanks for you cosistantly posting this wonderful list. My son is one of the ones being prayed for and I always appreciate it, though sometimes I forget to tell you!
If they do, the Dose regulars know how to take care of them.
She looks simply gorgeous in that photo, and I love Dubya's expression.
Dont we just!!
Absolutely. Very well stated.
Oh! CNN! Phooey on them! Who in the world even watches them anymore! If they say something diminishing about any of the Bush White House, I just assume that the opposite is true!
Yep, and I know that when I leave the thread in a little bit to go get dinner, the regulars will keep an eye on it. Our little Dose community is the best.
She is so incredibly beautiful! Mostly because love shines through her fack - uh face. Seriously, she is a true Christian and a truly lovely person. I have never heard a bad comment from her, an unkind word, or and uncharitable remark. Laura is loving and compassionate. If I could only be as kind as she...
Dana Bash is the CNN reporterette with the really narrow, pointy chin. I don't like her much at all.
Glad to hear it. I've about had it with them on the other threads today.

Hi snugs, how are you?
Hi, snugs. This is a particularly happy thread tonight. However, we've been warned that some cranks didn't like some of Laura's jokes last night and might try to troll this thread. BTW, Dick and Lynne Cheney looked great last night, and they were obviously having a marvelous time.
I have no doubt the Dose regs know very well how to handle them -- and I would venture to say, so do they and it would take a brave one (actually a foolish one) to try any of their nonsense on this thread.
I don't post here often, but I do enjoy what you all do!!!!
Cedric would have slayed the audience on any other night, but he had to follow Laura!
Always glad to oblige. Please stop by more often.
Hi, Snugs! Great to see you again. Thanks so much for the pics you posted to me on yesterday's dose of Spot and Barney, they were definitely keepers!
I agree, the Cheneys looked so happy and beautiful.
And if any unwanted guest come knocking...toasters at the ready!!
Yep. However, I did enjoy his jokes about Condi. So did she.
LOL, and reportedly he did make the remark that Laura was a hard act to follow! I believe it!
Guess his jokes about Condi were a hit, too!
Grizzfan asked me to post this link re the dinner last night, I am not certain if it any of the links that has already been posted but here it is anyway
"However, we've been warned that some cranks didn't like some of Laura's jokes last night and might try to troll this thread."
You wouldn't be talking about me would you?!
Hi Snugs, how are you doing tonite?
I do try to at least take a look at the daily pix!!!
I can't imagine what jokes Laura told last night would send trolls here...?!
That's the first rule of comedy, never follow a speaker that you cannot possibly top!
I think far too many people are perpetually stuck in adolescence. Laura's jokes were sweet, good-natured and, yes, a bit adult. But it was an adult audience, and well past most childrens' bedtimes. In addition, both George and Laura are nearly 59 years old, have two grown daughters, and have seen far too much of the worst the world has to offer during their years in the WH. Seems to me anyone who can't cut the First Lady a little slack deserves nothing but scorn.
I am fine thanks
I have no idea, DrDeb. I didn't follow any other threads on the dinner, and only have mentioned the warnings.
A roast is a roast is a roast. It's not for five year olds and it's all in good fun!
When's your next outing with the girls? I wish I had a gang like that to go out with. It sounds like you really have a great time with them.
I was not talking about you when I issued the warning, because I think your comments are always reasoned ones. There are some posters on threads I've been on today who have gotten downright nasty. THEY were who I was talking about. There is definitely room for disagreement on whether the first lady's comments were or weren't proper, IMO.
I couldn't agree with you more.
Actually I haven't watched CNN since...hmmmmmmm...the day we got Fox News in Odessa! They are just so biased it makes my hair hurt! LOL!
