We need your help for...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Time Traveler Convention May 7, 2005, 10:00pm EDT (08 May 2005 02:00:00 UTC) East Campus Courtyard, MIT 42:21:36.025°N, 71:05:16.332°W (42.360007,-071.087870 in decimal degrees)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is it?
Technically, you would only need one time traveler convention. Time travelers from all eras could meet at a specific place at a specific time, and they could make as many repeat visits as they wanted. We are hosting the first and only Time Traveler Convention at MIT in one week, and WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Why do you need my help?
We need you to help PUBLICIZE the event so that future time travelers will know about the convention and attend. This web page is insufficient; in less than a year it will be taken down when I graduate, and futhermore, the World Wide Web is unlikely to remain in its present form permanently. We need volunteers to publish the details of the convention in enduring forms, so that the time travelers of future millennia will be aware of the convention. This convention can never be forgotten! We need publicity in MAJOR outlets, not just Internet news. Think New York Times, Washington Post, books, that sort of thing. If you have any strings, please pull them.
Great idea, I'd love to help! What should I do?
Write the details down on a piece of acid-free paper, and slip them into obscure books in academic libraries! Carve them into a clay tablet! If you write for a newspaper, insert a few details about the convention! Tell your friends, so that word of the convention will be preserved in our oral history! A note: Time travel is a hard problem, and it may not be invented until long after MIT has faded into oblivion. Thus, we ask that you include the latitude/longitude information when you publicize the convention.
You can also make an absolute commitment to publicize the convention afterwards. In that case, bring a time capsule or whatever it may be to the party, and then bury it afterwards.
Can't the time travelers just hear about it from the attendees, and travel back in time to attend?
Yes, they can! In fact, we think this will happen, and the small number of adventurous time travelers who do attend will go back to their "home times" and tell all their friends to come, causing the convention to become a Woodstock-like event that defines humanity forever.
Unfortunately, we of the present (2005) don't have time travel, and so we only have one chance at observing the convention. If the time travelers don't leave us their secrets, we won't be able to go back in time and see our convention in all its glory unless it is publicized in advance.
Isn't time travel impossible?
We can't know for certain. The ancient Greeks would have thought computers were impossible, and the Phoenicians certainly wouldn't have believed that humans would one day send a spacecraft to the moon and back. We cannot predict the future of science or technology, so we can only make an effort and see if any time travelers come to our convention. If you would like to read more about time travel, check out our reading list.
I'm from the future, and I'd like to attend!
We're not sure how you're emailing us from the future, but we'd love to have you! Come as you are! No dress code whatsoever.
I'm from the present, and I'd like to attend!
Great! We would also love to have you, especially if you have helped publicize. We request that you bring refreshments if possible, as we need to make this a great party for you and for the time travelers. Email us at timetravelerconvention@gmail.com and we'll put you on the guestlist, and then show up at the designated place at the designated time! The East Campus Courtyard is in between the two red rectangles on this map.
I've volunteered and helped publicize!
Thanks! If you'd like to be included in the gallery, please send us a picture of your publicity effort by email at timetravelerconvention&gmail.com. You can also email us with any other questions you might have.
This is neat!
Thanks! If you like it, please consider linking to this page, and/or sending us an email.

We are all travelling in time...............it never stands still.
Been there, done that.
I thought I saw this yesterday....or maybe I'll see it tomorrow.
It wasn't what it was cracked up to be,....not worth the time...

Wait, let me tune up the DeLorean and gas up the guitar.
The Campaign for Real Time isn't going to (or doesn't or didn't) like this.

If time travel was possible, we would have already know about it.
I saw a notice in a pub in England:
"The Time Travelers meeting is to take place here at 6:00 p.m. last Monday"
(Denny Crane: "Sometimes you can only look for answers from God and failing that... and Fox News".)
Yeah. It was GREAT! (sorry to hear about your testicle, though)
Not necessarily. Let's say you create a time machine that lets you move forward or backward in time to the same time machine. You can hop in it and travel forward a week because the time machine is still there in a week. But you can't travel backwards in time to a point in time before it existed. You can only travel forward or backwards in time as long as the time machine is in physical existence in real time. If it's destroyed at some point in the future, you won't be able to travel any further into the future than that point either.
It's like building an elevator. You can't travel any further up or down into space than that which it is constructed in and perhaps you can't travel in time to a point before or after your time machine existed.
Not to be picky, but isn't there too many "and"s in this sentence?
Guest speaker will be Christopher Reeves.
There will never be time travel. I know this is true because no one from the future has ever appeared.
Is UTC the former ZULU Time?
This is from MIT??? I thought the current thinking was that you can't travel back to any time before the first time machine is invented.
This is a duplicate post. It was already posted tomorrow several times.
Already attended. It will be kind of a bore.
Silk Ping.
UTC stands for "Universal Time Coordinated." It is the official replacement of GMT, which stands for "Greenwich Mean Time." UTC is a timescale kept by atomic clocks. GMT is a timesecale kept by astrononimical observations of the earth's motion relative to the Sun. Zulu time is a military term that used to be a synonym for GMT, but is now a synonym for UTC. UTC is maintained to within 0.9 seconds of GMT by the occasional addition or subtraction of leap seconds to the difference between GMT and atomic clock time.
You must have gotten stuck in the "Doo Dah" Room. The boredom there was legendary. I already heard about that one and avoided it, opting instead for the breadkout session on paradoxes. It was great/awful, and I'm still picking feathers out of my teeth.
If you weren't there, don't ask.
I was planning to attend, but I couldn't make room on my calendar.
Should it not be:
"I wonder when people will should up?"
Nobody WILL be there they already went.
You can travel forward and backward you just need the right speed. Man cannot travel that fast.
Why not they have already teleported a particle. It was moved from one place to another. Of course it was broke down and rebuilt.
Kind of hard on the human body that would be. But they just did it last year. The particle came through fine, it even seemed happy to have participated. But then not knowing if a particle is happy or sad the scientists were merely speculating on its mental state.
Do particles have mental states?
Do states have mentals?
I need coffee.
I attended paradoxes as well. I met myself, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. One poor sap, however, travelled in from the future, met his grandfather (who was only 31 years old and as yet still hadn't met his future wife), and accidentally killed him. Wild stuff.
I'm too frugal to have paradoxes. I only have one dox.
I didn't believe you until I checked. You're right. I measured my time velocity at 1.000010034 seconds per second. I think that means that I aging just a bit faster than the average. Hardly noticeable but detectable with my Whizo Time Traveler Wristwatch with the Atom viewer attachment.
My future counterpart insisted on talking my ear off and kept me from meeting my wife. I'm still kicking myself.

IF you have a website that can do that ... by all means please share :)
IF you have a website that can do that ... by all means please share :)
Actually, I'm working on a date/time code library that does all the above--and more. I suspect a website that uses my code library will eventually appear.
...will be held last week in the auditorium.
We hope you had a great time!
LOL I get into trouble talking too much to myself as well.
People traveling back in time would have to be very careful not to disturb anything so as to put there era or themselves at risk. Changing history even a little could have disastrous consequences. Time travelers visiting us from the future would have to keep the whole thing a tight secret.
If UFO's are anything more than swamp gas, it makes more sense to me that they are time travelers. That does less violence to physics than traveling faster than light does.
Interesting you should post that. I have always thought that the aliens were from our future and needed to replenish their gene pool. It does make some bizarre sense.
