SALT LAKE Elizabeth Smart (search), the Utah teenager who was abducted nearly three years ago, has won a more upbeat recognition, being named one of People magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People." (search)
The annual "Beautiful People" issue, which hit newsstands Friday, is usually filled exclusively with entertainment stars, but this year they are joined by the 17-year-old blonde.
Elizabeth was abducted from her bedroom in June 2002. Nine months later, she was found on a suburban street with a transient couple who were charged with kidnapping her. The legal case against Brian David Mitchell (search) and Wanda Barzee (search) is still pending.

This seems a little bit creepy...
this just confirms what I suspected about the media all along. .. that they're vapid, superficial people only interested in a pretty face.
Is it me, or is there just something not quite right about this?
Hmm. I don't think this is appropriate, since Ms. Smart did not actively seek the limelight.
Anyone who remembers the song will have a close mental association between the phrases 'Beautiful People' and 'total airhead'.
Media exploitation. Later they will attempt to destroy her.
The media and the public does it to anyone who does anything the slightest bit deserving of publicity and to those to whom publicity comes without their asking. I believe it's a very negative trend and not good for the people involved. They need to let this young woman alone and recede back into anonymity as much as possible.
Very strange. Almost repugnant.
You got that right.
Same feeling here, although I have seen her picture in the issue, and she is really a beautiful young lady.
"Is it me, or is there just something not quite right about this?"
It's not just you. I agree - this is wrong.
What's disturbing is knowing that she gained fame for losing her innocence in a bizarre fashion, and the media vultures are fascinated with keeping that wound open.
she is beautiful, but since her beauty made her a target, the media is victimizing her again by calling attention to it.
I have a feeling that there's a reason Ed Smart doesn't drag his daughter around to every interview he does. The media needs to leave her alone.
Or since she obviously assented to the photo and appearance and posed for it, maybe she's trying to show that she's not afraid of being who she is.
I agree that it is media exploitation. The motive is probably to get her to come out and talk about what happened to her. She has kept her ordeal out of the public eye, and the media can't handle that. They need/want all of the gory details.
There is...and she did.
Still seems awfully inappropriate.
Yes she did.
Looks like she did a photo shoot for this.
Seems strange to me.
I guess this means that Lindy Engand didn't make the list?
/sar.
What, Jon Benet Ramsey didn't get a mention?
She kinda looks like Cameron Diaz in that pic...
Anyone notice who's on the cover and #1 in most beautiful? Julia Roberts. They sure are promoting her, People has always featured her from what I've seen over the years. Their new Princess Di. But she's a has-been in reality.
A lot of folks here seem to be overlooking the possibility that she wasn't abducted after all.
Photoshop is a great thing.
She could be the next Donny Osmond.
I think "People" magazine is trying to be nice.
She looks REALLY good in that pic.
I suspect a lot more here than meets the eye...I think we will find out more about her and her case..Father is creepy as hell
Glad to see shes well enough to milk the case for all its worth now..Her own show on MTV will be here soon
Yea,They forced her to have her pixs taken and be on the list
That's because the people who think she wasn't abducted are morons. They are easy to overlook.
If she hid, that would indicate that there is some sort of shame in her life from being a true victim. By saying 'I'm not afraid of what people think of me', she is taking control of what happened to her.
She is a beautiful girl, would you deny her award if she hadn't been raped? Shame on you if not.
She is a very pretty girl...
and she obviously posed for the picture.
I don't see a problem here.
Is she writing a book??
No trial yet.....and her father doesn't want her to testify if there ever is one. Too stressful for her. She deserves her privacy.
Perhaps she has a different opinion than dear old dad. Definitely seems like she is putting herself out there in the public, for whatever reason.
maybe daddy assented to the pic. since he's still on the talk show circuit, i tend to wonder why, and what good reminding the public of the kid's ordeal would do the child.
if you ask me, there's something wrong about the dad's continued harping about this. bet he's paid.
Maybe some of us are realistic enough to admit that we have no freaking clue what the hell happened to her.
People is scum but the girl posed for the pics so you blame them then your blame her
It's sort of like citing one of Jeffrey Dahmer's victims on a "Most Delicious" list.
That's just weird.
What a bizarre media-driven culture we inhabit.
This seems a little bit creepy...

Exactly.
Yeah?? Well what about Chelsea - Huh!!
Could be, could be...I'm just throwing out another opinion.
Everytime i see that family i have even more doubts bout the case
In spite of all your comments, she's still BABE-O-LICIOUS! Maybe she was born in BABE-A-LON.
