Why is it depraved? Churchill was the one who said an Iron Curtain was descending upon Europe. The USSR had occupied Eastern Europe, and the realization that Hitler should have been stopped after he invaded Austria was still fresh.

Some slaves were given a fair amount of personal freedom by their masters (not all slaves worked in cotton fields and not all women were raped). But their status as slaves did not change - heard about Dred Scott case? Some slaves were even quite affluent people, but they were stiil at the mercy of their masters. Their favour could have been withdrawn at any moment. The Czechs and Slovaks thought that they were free, when all of a sudden in 1968 it turned out that they were wrong. They just forgot to ask their masters permission to do with their country what they liked. Slavery is a permanent state - when your independence is taken away from you, you're a slave. Whether you work on a cotton field or not is irrelevant.
When the Soviets invaded the Baltic States, the decision for many male Latvians, Estonians, and Lithuanians was a simple one---be once again under Russian control or join the Germany army and fight alongside them against Stalin and his troops.

According your definition the independence of Southern States was taken away from them as result of Civil War 1965.
Then they are slaves. The victors from North are masters.
