Freaks. Yep. If they are happy, more power to them. Not my kind of "pursuit of happiness" though.

Dave Dailey, who owns the hardware store by Avner's home, describes Avner as "the smartest guy I've ever known." Dailey said he frequently refers his customers to Avner when they need computer repairs. Exceedingly small circle of friends.

Life can be pretty weird up here in the hills.

People should be allowed to do whatever they want to themselves without fear of ridicule. How are people who get tattoos and body modifications any different from people who work out to get buff, wax their hair, put on makeup, have plastic surgery, or use a laser to burn off whatever it is they don't like? Just because someone is going against what society says is the ideal look for a person, doesn't mean their motives are any less justifiable than those who try to achieve the "ideal" human form.

Sounds nice in theory.
Real life, however, is much different.
If you make yourself look like a freak to get attention, don't be surprised when people laugh.

To quote my brother
"We're all just different degrees of crazy people" ;)
Folks like this don't bother me a bit.
It's the 'average' on the outside, rotten on the inside ones that scare the bejeezus out of me.

I agree with you ... this cat dude is probably a nice enough guy, and I'd be courteous to him, as I try to be to everyone.
However, there are a lot of 'shoulds' in this world.
People should be happy with themselves as they are, and not indulge in self-mutilation to achieve a false self that pleases their ego ... it's a loser's game.
The President should be able to wage a just war and not be ridiculed by the Lefties of the world as a retarded Nazi wannabe.
Nominated judges should be given their vote in the Senate.
BlueCross/BlueShield should allow me to buy health insurance rather than deny me because I had a tiny episode of skin cancer 15 years ago.
Gas should still be 25 cents a gallon.
And on and on and on.
It's all the things that should be, and are not, that keep the world interesting, and occasionally tragic.
