More heat for Tancredo; Rep. Cannon doubts whether Coloradan should be in GOP
Rocky Mountain News ^ | 5/5/2005 | M.E. Sprengelmeyer

WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo ought to reconsider his membership in the Republican Party, a Utah congressman said Wednesday after the two GOP lawmakers put an intraparty rift over immigration policy on full public display.

"I think he ought to consider his views and decide whether they're consistent with the Republican Party," Rep. Chris Cannon, R-Utah, said of the Colorado congressman after the two clashed repeatedly during a forum sponsored by the Latino Coalition, a Hispanic business group.

Cannon, a leading proponent of President Bush's proposed guest- worker program, has had a running feud with Tancredo, an opponent of the plan and outspoken advocate of tougher immigration enforcement. Last year, a political action committee founded by Tancredo targeted Cannon during his primary election challenge.

The two men sat side by side on stools at Wednesday's event inside Washington's J.W. Marriott hotel, and the rhetoric got so emotional that at one point they had a comical tussle over who would get to hold the microphone next.

The debate began with a third panelist, Rep. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., denouncing unnamed people he said were exploiting the immigration issue because of bigotry, hatred and prejudice.

"If not for the undocumented workers in this country, I'd say that this room would not have been as clean and well-organized this morning," Gutierrez said.

Tancredo challenged Gutierrez when he took the microphone.

"We certainly would not want to pander to anyone on this issue, would we?" Tancredo said. "What I just heard was not that, was it?"

Tancredo repeated his long-standing call for the country to close its "porous borders" before it considers a new guest-worker program.

"It is crazy to suggest this nation should not do everything possible to secure the border," Tancredo said, saying a desire for cheap, immigrant labor could leave the borders open to terrorists or narcotics traffickers. Tancredo equates Bush's proposal to "amnesty" for illegal immigrants, saying it would reward people who entered the country illegally.

When it was his turn, Cannon immediately endorsed Gutierrez's earlier statement. He said the vast majority of Americans believe that undocumented immigrants should have "a path to citizenship" as long as they have willing employers, have not committed crimes and already are contributing to society.

Cannon said only a small minority of people "truly believe we should kick out" all illegal immigrants. He cited one of Tancredo's political allies, conservative commentator Pat Buchanan, who got about 1 percent of the vote after he left the Republican Party and ran for president in 2000 as a third-party candidate.

"I don't think there's a place in the Republican Party for racism, for xenophobia, for ideas that are fundamentally un-American," Cannon said.

Tancredo clapped quietly, saying he also sees no place in the debate for racism or xenophobia, which refers to a fear of foreign people or things.

Still, some observers - including a Tancredo staff member - interpreted it as an indirect reference to Tancredo, since he has recently toyed with the idea of following in Buchanan's footsteps and mounting a presidential campaign in 2008.

Asked after the event if he thought Tancredo was racist or xenophobic, Cannon said: "I don't know what motivates him."

In an interview, Tancredo fired back at Cannon, pointing to his primary election challenge by Republican Matt Throckmorton in 2004. The Team America PAC, founded by Tancredo and chaired by Buchanan's sister, Bay Buchanan, backed Throckmorton. Another group, Project U.S.A., placed billboards saying "Congressman Chris Cannon wants amnesty for illegal aliens. Do you?"

"Of the two of us, Mr. Cannon is the only one who has had a primary (challenge since taking office)," Tancredo said. "Evidently, there are a lot of people in his district who believe he is not Republican enough."

Tancredo has recently started traveling to early presidential primary states like New Hampshire, saying he wants to make sure the "serious candidates" put the immigration issue front-and-center in the 2008 race.

He has said it is unlikely he would actually run in - or win - a presidential race, but that he would consider a campaign if other candidates ignore the issue.

But he sees no need to leave the Republican Party.

"I believe the Republican Party is with me on the issue," Tancredo said.

"As long as that's the case, I frankly can't think why I would change. In the Republican Party, more people agree with me than with President Bush and Mr. Cannon (on immigration)."

Tancredo was facing a polite but generally skeptical crowd at The Latino Coalition event. Before he appeared, an opening speaker, while listing the VIPs invited to speak, added, "I'm sorry, but we also have Congressman Tom Tancredo."

That prompted a smattering of boos and hisses.

About 30 minutes after Tancredo, Cannon and Gutierrez left the stage, President Bush appeared for a presentation on Social Security. He got huge applause when he diverged to talk about his guest worker plan, which could go before Congress later this year.

I know. I really like President Bush but there are some things I disagree with him on, such as this guest worker program.

I agree with Representative Tancredo: we need to do everything we can to secure our borders and we can't reward illegal immigrants.

2004 Score - 100

I dont know why Tank seems to want to attack attack attack, but then again, there may be a reason he can't seem to get any committee chairs or anything...

After spending several years starting oil exploration crews for Pemex and re-reading Atlas Shrugged, I think I have The reason Mexico has become so bad.

I like the Mexican people in the fly over parts of Mexico. The mid level and workers of Pemex are good. It is the government and the high up in Pemex that are the vultures and looters. The peso was about 8 cents (12.5 to a dollar). When Pemex found the sito grande, a very large oil pool that covers parts of the states of Chiapas and Tabasco also a long ways into the Gulf of Mexico.

Pemex borrowed billions to produce this great oil find. The looters (government) stole most of the money and what they did buy was junk oil rigs and drill pipe, etc. 1,000 pesos which was worth about $80 now will not buy a coke. This was due to the looters stealing billions from the Mexican people. This is old pesos.
Instead of overthrowing the looters the Mexican people had an out, they had no weapons and they could cross into America and have a much safer life. This hurts both Mexico and America as Mexico lost some of it's hardest workers. The gangbangers also came over from Mexico as they could rape and pillage at will.

The government of Mexico is propped up by the billions sent back by the illegals and by our government having borders that are too open.

The only chance I see to help America and Mexico is to seal the border, deport the people who are not here legaly. We also need to arm the Mexican people so they can have a chance against the looters with their armies.

WOW! If Mr. Cannon is the measure of a Republican then it might be time for me to go too.

""If not for the undocumented workers in this country, I'd say that this room would not have been as clean and well-organized this morning," Gutierrez said."

Indeed. How in the hell has America ever accomplished anything without the help of illegal aliens. Mr. Gutierrez is just another example of an American that defends illegal aliens while insulting fellow citizens.

How about "I think the Republican Party ought to reconsider its views and decide whether they're consistent with the American People."

If this country suffers another 9/11 like attack traced to terrorists who snuck in from Mexico, the GOP had better run to the nearest non-extradition country.

Thanks for posting this. I have some family members in Utah -- don't know if they're in the 3rd District. But I'll be doing some heavy lobbying AGAINST Cannon with my family. I can guarantee they will vote AGAINST him if he continues to represent illegals at the expense of the citizens in the 3rd District. It appears that Cannon's first obligation is $$$$$ anyway -- exploiting illegals benefits shareholders and business owners, certainly

I'm a strongly pro-immigrant libertarian GOP activist. There are several pro-immigrant factions in the GOP big tent.
I'm in a faction with libertarians like Eric Dondero who trust the free market.
Dubya (and my local GOP leader) are compassionate social conservatives. They are pro-immigrant for the same reason they are pro-life.
A third faction are the Mercantilists whose companies benefit from a supply of labor that cannot be found without immigrants.
The Roveites don't want to alienate a voting block. Since my local compassionate conservative GOP leader and I have done very well with the local Hispanic and Indian vote, maybe we have two reasons.
And then there are the moderates in the GOP who are afraid someone will call them racist if they don't support immigration. They don't have the courage of any particular conviction.

Only a few in the last group would not welcome Tancredo in the big tent. We disagree on a point of policy. I don't like my tax money going to farm subsidies but I'm not trying to kick those misguided farm-state politicians out of the party. I'd only kick out the corrupt ones in the Illinois-bi-partisan-combine who line their pockets with taxpayer money.

It could be noted that those favoring more restrictions on immigration also probably have factions. A few are blatantly racist. But most are just nervous that the invisible hand of capitalism will not work and fear that the sky is falling.

10 years from now, if the Republicans are still the majority party, they will have only Tancredo to thank.

Immigration is a HUGE issue in this country, and it cuts across all parities and all demographics. While the Republicans tend to ignore it, even Hillary is now to the right of Bush, as she has called for sealing our boarders.

If the Republican party would listen to Tom, and do it with class - by the way, they can put the final nail in the Democratic coffin, and we'll all be done with these clowns.

President Bush and the republican party need to quit pandering to big business and listen to the people regarding Illegal immigration. I don't know anyone where I live who doesn't think that illegal immigration needs to be totally stopped. This is more important than social security, Iraq, or any other issue out there.
