In a letter to the Modesto Bee, Lee Peterson says:
"My son was convicted because he had an affair. He was convicted by a jury full of hatred because of the way Scott was vilified in the media... Scott will be freed through the appellate process in time, mark my words."
Lee Peterson was responding to news reports last week that the Laci Peterson case cost taxpayers $4.1 million dollars.
No, Lee....your son was convicted of a double murder.
Investigation a $4.13M lie
Concerning the article "Peterson's final tab $4.13M" (April 22, Page A-1), it is time for some truth to be told. Modesto citizens bore the cost of the police department investigation and trial to put an innocent man on death row.
Ron Grantski says the investigation was done professionally; ergo, a conviction was forthcoming. That is utter nonsense. The detectives in this case were anything but professional. They leaked lies to the media from day one.
For example, a life insurance policy which was two years old was reported to the media to be just days old.
The Modesto Police Department failed to follow up on solid leads and sightings. These leads did not fit the MPD's scenario. The police deliberately withheld exculpatory evidence a woman saw Laci at the warehouse where the boat was kept. That would account for the single hair found in the boat, a hair that might have been Laci's.
Expenditures of $4 million and the MPD, FBI and Department of Justice came up with one hair, which possibly belonged to Laci and which could have been where it was found by any number of means.
My son has no history of violence or a police record that suggests he could be capable of anything like this. My son was convicted by the media, mostly because of lies leaked by the MPD. Pressure was brought to solve this crime (and) pin it on someone so the MPD wouldn't look inept. The MPD gave in to this pressure.
My son was convicted because he had an affair. He was convicted by a jury full of hatred because of the way Scott was vilified in the media.
He was convicted because of public opinion. Scott was not convicted of this crime under the standards required by law. The evidence presented did not meet the standards required to convict.
Consider: There was no cause of death, no crime scene, no motive, not a shred of evidence in the home or truck, no background of abuse, not even a harsh word was heard from Scott to Laci by any witness including Sharon Rocha or Laci's siblings or friends.
The media manipulates our justice system in this country, and all you folks out there (especially in Modesto) should be scared as hell of what could happen to you and your families in this atmosphere of police corruption and media bias.
The Modesto Police Department, by its behavior, made it clear it cared not one whit about truth or justice. The detectives and the chief were only interested in self-aggrandizement and their own careers.
The power these people have (and utterly misused) is awesome. Because of them, a man is on death row and a family is hurting beyond all comprehension.
Scott will be freed through the appellate process in time, mark my words. He is innocent, innocent, innocent.
Thanks Mr. Peterson, we've all been on pins and needles wondering what you had to say.
I see. Scott's a "victim."
Shoot.......that link worked a minute ago!
Thank you for sharing that, Lee. Now, SHUT UP.
And I bet every word of that is the unbiased truth!
Reminds me of Kerry's mother on her deathbed.
This man is delusional.
"Scott will be freed through the appellate process in time, mark my words." Lee Peterson was responding to news reports last week that the Laci Peterson case cost taxpayers $4.1 million dollars.
Keep hanging on to that thread of Hope, Dad. I suppose I would too, if I had no concept of reality. (This must be affecting Dad's income in a negative way; it was time to take action!)
Looks like they're gearing up for the appeal.
How come we don't see more headlines like this?
Lee, why don't you just blame George Bush. That should get most of California and it's lefty Judges on your side.
Now we know where Scott gets his ability to deny truth.....
I swear I thought I proofed it! That's what I get for doing four things at one time!
I liked it. Proof less often.
I suspect we'll be seeing them all over cable shortly. But I don't even think he has an attorney!
The heart of the problem, we see, still exists. Scott has been coddled all his life: the Golden Boy who could do no wrong. He thought he would get away with it, and his parents want to help him do so. The arrogance of this family is astounding.
I was thinking the other day about the day you posted one entire play..............LOL.
Conspicuously absent from Mr. Peterson's letter is any concern about who actually did kill his daughter-in-law. Or perhaps he denies that she's dead at all?
Consider how devastated his parents must be--how incredibly unbelievable to them is the fact their son is a murderer. I'm sure they did a good job when Scott was a kid. Scott made a very, very wicked choice. The psychological ruin put on his parents is one of his crimes--a crime for which he has not been convicted.
I might react the same way if my child did something so unbelievably heinous, out of character, out of the blue.
So I urge those of us who believe in prayer to say a little one for Scott's parents. We needn't sacrifice our compassion for them in order to demand justice for Scott's crimes.
A loving father with his blinders on attempting to defend his son. Too bad Scott didn't inherit any parental instinct from him. Scott sure didn't protect his child- He killed him.
Hmmm . . . Where did Scott get all that cash he had on him when he was caught? I don't think I ever heard (which is surprising since it seemed like the media hammered us 24/7 with every sordid detail). IF he got it from his old man, shouldn't Lee be in jail himself for helping his son to flee?
No one in Scott's family seems all that torn up at the loss of a grandchild.
they must have a reptilian gene to be so cold-blooded.
Worked for me...
"Cost taxpayers $ 4.1 Million" NOT including the cost keep him for the next 25 plus years plus public defender for appeals. There defense/belief in their son is unbelievable.
From the Letters to the Editor:
Where is he coming from?
I read the letter from Scott Peterson's father ("Investigation a $4.13 million lie," May 3 ) over and over again and tried to see where he was coming from. The only words that kept coming to my mind is "total state of denial."
Time was when parents would be ASHAMED of their son if he was convicted of a double murder. Time was when the parents would apologize to the parents of the murder victims, and even move away because they were so horrified and embarrassed by being the parents of a killer.
Now, however, too many people simply refuse to acknowledge the facts. "I don't like it, so it's not true." Talking to such people is like talking to the insane (no insult meant to the insane). They live in a world of self-delusion.
Money well spent, IMHO.
What is this suppose to suggest, if the cost is too steep, let cold blooded wife and offspring killers go free!?
The cost for that kind of mentality is far more greater, and damaging to society.
Well, I understand, but I'd like the WHOLE truth, not just the part this bozo thinks we should have.
He's definitely setting the stage for his appeal. But he won't win.
Actually, I was just beginning to enjoy the silence on this issue.
It looks like it runs in the family. Now we have screwball dad to go with belligerent mom and satanic son.
Whatever makes you think Lee's a screwball? I mean, just because on the day the jury found his son guilty of a double murder he was hundreds of miles away buying himself a Jaguar doesn't mean he doesn't care.
The truth doesn't seem to enter into the Peterson family dynamic.
Dead wrong; the appeal is ONLY about mistakes the judge made; he bent over backwards for Geragos and Peterson.
BTW, just so you and Lee will know, you don't have to prove motive, nor identify a crime scene, nor even prove how death occurred.
Really? I wonder how Laci's family is feeling.
Scott Peterson was convicted because the jury believes he killed his wife and unborn son. The evidence showed him to be a manipulative, sociopathic, pathological lying narcissist with no remorese and no feelings of any kind.
His lack of emotion upon his guilty verdict speaks volumes, IMO. It is beyond me that one who is truly not guilty of a crime would sit there calmly while being read a verdict of "guilty" for the crime.
The guy did it and he won't be free ever again. Mr. Peterson needs to accept the fact that he raised a sociopathic murderer.
Dad has some serious denial problems.
Well, there's the rub; he can't or won't. Like the letter writer said, if he really was innocent, he should have taken the stand.
I am curious about the cost of an investigation, any investigation. The people who conduct the investigation are county/city/state employees are they not? They get a salary whether they are sitting on their butts or gathering information, correct? Where does the huge cost come from, overtime, lab test? Where?
Sad, true, and funny all at the same time.
I think Lee needs to take a couple of puffs from his wife's oxygen tank to clear his head!
This is something we should worry about...
As for Scotty well he is home.
