Police: Girl, 2, dies after apparent dog mauling

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A 2-year-old girl appears to have been mauled to death Friday by her family's two Huskies, police said.
Police in this Oakland County community said the dogs were taken into the custody of animal control after the attack shortly before 9:30 a.m. EDT.
The child's mother and grandparents were in the house at the time, police said, and her mother called 911 after the child was found in the backyard. The parents were interviewed, police said, and had not been charged.
Additional information wasn't immediately available.
Well, maybe NOW the government will step in and ban dog ownership.
Perhaps we can sue the dog breeders. Or the American Kennel Club for failing to warn us that dogs can be unpredictable.

They drown in pools...they get into cupboards and eat poisonous substances...they play in traffic....they get into
all kinds of trouble..and get seriously injured and killed.
Leaving them alone with any dogs..but especially large ones

How about parents who do not watch their children around dogs?
A dog is a dog. It will revert to it's instinct. It is the parent's job not to trust that animal around one's own offspring.
One thing I have learned over the years is that quite a species of dogs can feel jealousy of a newborn or small children. And the end result is described here.

I was told by my Pediatrician that the largest amount of dog bites to children happen when the child is two to three because the dog no longer see the child as a baby but rather part of the pack.
The dog may well be fighting for it's place.

I have two Huskies. They are the sweetest dogs I have ever had. That said, I won't leave either alone with any of my children, when I have them.
I would agree with your assessment if the dogs were trained to kill but a dog that goes nuts is not always the human owners fault.
I think you are right. The only dogs that ever attacked me were a set of two, kept by a family. They revert to the "pack mentality" when there is more than one.
I have two new lab-akita puppies, and I intend to keep a close eye on them, no matter how gentle they appear. I can really see the "me-too" coming out, even at 9 weeks.

Some dogs can get aggressive when someone gets to close to their food dish or toys. The parents should not have left the child alone with the dogs. I have a Jack Russell that I would not trust with an adult let alone a child.

Yes , believe me I know all about JR's. Ours has never been aggresive to humans or cats but he is definatley the Alpha Male when it comes to the other four dogs, two of wich weigh 10 times as much as he does.

That's the thing of it, isn't it. I'd like to know what the two (2!) women were so involved with that they were not keeping an eye on the kid and the dogs.
Execute the dogs and the parents.

And that's all it takes. I was a hawk, an absolute hawk with my kid, but I tell you, she moved FAST, and there were a couple of heart-attack moments. Things can really happen in a second, but you've got to be a lot more careful than many people are. My kid was NEVER let play outside alone when she was too, even though other family members would encourage me to let her do so.
The parents of this little girl just entered a prison much much worse than any built by man.
The owner immediately put all 3 to death, which they should do, but as time has passed neighbors are coming forth with stories about the bad behavior of those dogs. In fact, AFTER their complaints to the police, the family finally penned them in the yard. I think the parents should be charged with felony child abuse, and for keeping dogs known to have aggressive behavior.

The best dog I ever had was a Huskey mix. She was with us before the kids and up until they were about 10 years old. I don't fault the dogs so much as the owners.

I grew up with six siblings and 6 different dogs over the years, including 2 huge German shepherds. We were not always watched when playing. No one ever even got a scratch. I guess even dogs are stressed out these days.

Two year olds really have no sense. They can't be left alone to play, dogs or no dogs.

Our Jack Russell was aggressive with both my husband and myself. He is an alpha male and very hard headed. It took us two years to knock some sense into him. He no longer bites us but he attacks all 3 of my Rottweilers. They steer clear of him. When he bites he locks on and it is very difficult to pry him loose.

Amen to that...I love my pets but they are not and will never be more important than a human life!
I would add that it was nice of him to provide you notice of his intentions. Most little boys I know would just have gone ahead and done it.
Then there was the time my little sister (now 30-some and mother of three girls under 3) put the button in her nose . . . and the time she put the popcorn kernel in her ear and it popped . . . and the time she pulled out both her (non-loose) front teeth because I'd lost a tooth and she figured the Tooth Fairy would double up on her . . .
As far as my brother went, I'll always remember him chasing me and my sister around the house with Dad's fraternity paddle (that thing was made out of METAL) . . . chugging a bottle of Jean Nate on a dare made by one of his sisters . . . putting half a lizard in my sister's shoe . . .

I'm curious what the breed of the dogs really was. Could have been huskies, could have been malmutes, could have been wolf hygrids for that matter.
Of course, I absolutely agree that one should not leave a 2 year old unsupervised and children should not be left at the mercy of any dogs (and yes, I own big dogs, goldens, who I would never ever expect to hurt a child, but it is not worth ever taking the risk).

Huskies are active, high energy dogs, with many wolf-like characteristics. They need lots of exercise, otherwise they get frustrated and more agressive. How much do you want to bet that these dogs were just left tied up in the yard everyday?
So it's a safe bet.
