Prosecutor: Rape claim won't be factor in possible charges against Wilbanks

GAINESVILLE - Runaway bride Jennifer Wilbanks' phony report to police that she was sexually assaulted won't be an additional factor for a Georgia prosecutor considering criminal charges. If she lied, she lied, he says.

Responding to reports from police in Albuquerque, N.M., that Wilbanks said she was sexually assaulted in addition to being kidnapped - allegations she later recanted - Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said Friday that he is examining evidence for one charge, providing false statements to a government agency.

Porter is gathering tapes and reports from five law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, as he decides whether to pursue charges against the 32-year-old Wilbanks, who vanished last week days before her planned lavish wedding.

Remember Midnight in The Garden of Good and Evil.

Maybe someone will wirte a book and people will make pilgrimages to Duluth. Sort of a hip thing to do. Maybe it will put them on the map.

***So what do we punish her for? Being mentally unstable?***

Exactly.
She didn't fake her kidnapping and leave a phony ransom note, she just left town. And the last I checked it wasn't against the law for an un-married adult to go where they wanted and when - even without telling anyone.

The only 'crime' she really committed was making a false claim in Albuquerque - and that PD and the FEEB have refused to prosecute as she subsequently fessed up PDQ so no undue expense was involved. As to her lying to her BF and the local cops over the phone, whoopee - that didn't cost anyone an extra red cent.

If anything, it was the fiance, her friends and mainly the MEDIA who created the brouhaha in Ga. and the accompanying police expense - file charges against them. Put the handcuffs on Gretta and Rita Crosby :-)

Given the runaway bride theme, I think a travelling circus would be most appropriate.

I nominate the omnipresent pastor as ringmaster.

Coming soon to a state fairgrounds near you.

For the LOVE OF GOD, MAN, we don't want Rita Crosby to go to prison.

What would we do without hearing from her SOURCES? Think, man.

Whatever happened to standing wolf, anyways? It seems like he up and disappeared from that other site.

So what do we punish her for? Being mentally unstable?

If she knew the difference between right and wrong, and that's the criterion in Georgia, she could and should be on the hook for her actions.

Not teasing at all.

Only after some of the kinks were worked out did his buds find it expedient to lease boxcar stock...

I'm not in asshole rippin' mode cuz it's a beautiful spring day in PA,
but the comment that started this little exchange is exactly the kinda thing the morons at DU love to find here.

As to Rita Crosby,
Somebody needs to put a sock in her mouth. She has the most irritating voice in television. If I was married to her - I'D run away.
(Plus the sock in her puss will help her weight 'problem'.)

I'll give the ex credit for this: whenever she'd get a new outfit, she took the scissors to those damned shoulder pads!

It goes without saying that good relationships and great civilizations cannot be built on lies and running away from one's commitments. I don't disagree with the notion that Ms. Wilbanks' conduct has been shameful, a fact which I suspect she knows well, since she walks through airports with a towel over her head.

However, I have thought all week about the fact that Jesus forgave the woman who was caught in the act of adultery, after he chased off the self-righteous people who wanted to stone her. I could go on and on here about the woman at the well, Zaccheus, the prodigal son, the thief on the cross, etc. It seems to me that Jesus didn't have much time for people who think they have their act together, because he was busy searching for the lost sheep on the hillside. Perhaps a real Jesus would rather spend an hour today with Jennifer Wilbanks than with most of us, because most of us are self-righteous. At least she is in a position to know she's a mess.

OH i see, i think you took my wording out of context then. I take it you don't believe in executing people that have commited crimes?
Just curious.

"Wilbanks has not said publicly whether she still plans to marry Mason..."

Oddily oddily oddily (shaking my head).

Does the writer have any reason to doubt that the couple still intends to marry?

You know what, C.J.? This situation is still volatile. It must be, given the characters and the situation.
