Hollywood Slump: Box Office Down for 11th Straight Weekend

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The lucrative summer movie season suffered its worst start in years Sunday, as the costly Crusades epic "Kingdom of Heaven" crawled into the No. 1 slot at the North American weekend box office with meager ticket sales of just $20 million.

The film, which cost nearly $150 million to produce, stars Orlando Bloom -- "Hollywood's No. 1 pretty boy," according to Rolling Stone magazine -- as a humble French blacksmith who takes on the Arabs during the 12th century.

It was directed by British filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott, who had better luck with such films as "Gladiator" and "Hannibal," and released by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp.

Industry hopes that "Kingdom" would pull the business out of a lengthy slump were dashed: the box office has now endured 11 "down" weekends when compared with the year-ago periods. According to tracking firm Exhibitor Relations, this ties the longest losing streak, which ran from July to October in 2000.

GOOD!!!

Maybe they shgould market their pro-Islamic version of the Crusades in Mecca or Medina. Itr might sell better there.

"The film, which cost nearly $150 million to produce"

""Twenty (million) is very, very good," said Bruce Snyder, Fox's president of domestic theatrical distribution."

--> You still got 130million to go to break even buddy! Do the math.

I'm waiting for a version of "Bambi" from the perspective of the hunter who shot his mother. Did he turn her into venison stew, roast venison, or what?

In any event, he's a cinematic hero who has long gone unrecognised. Furthermore, they ought to take some artistic liberties and have him turn Thumper into rabbit stew as well.

Regards, Ivan

Keep raising up the bad and raunchy instead of the good and this will continue to happen IMO.

Even with Star Wars, I don't think it will do as well as they would hope for.

I do think the remake of War of the Worlds and the Fantastic Four might do real well.

People don't want to see liberal Hollywood's PC distorted version of history, they want to see the truth. The crusades were a huge success in that they halted the invasion of Europe by the barbaric Islamic armies. Europe stood together and said NO to tyranny. The prosperity of freedom in Europe and the United States can be directly attributed to the sacrifices of the crusaders.

I believe the split with the theaters is 50% so the production company still has $140 million to go, but there are a lot of soft costs that are padding that number.

I was surprised that the article did not once blame hollywood's problems on people making copies of movies. It must be because nobody is bothering to copy new movies.

They say you know business is bad when even those who aren't paying won't come in the store...

yes, and last year would have been down too if Passion of The Christ were not released.

Funny, they refused to honor the best selling movie in a long time, yet they dont tell that last year they would have had a decline in ticket grosses...

Further more, ticket sales have declined annually since the 40s, and price increases have made up the differences in "total grosses"

It may have more to do with people spending twice the amount for gas that they have previously. An extra 20-50 bucks a week used to buy that extra grocery or theatre trip.

They have to do a lot better than that if that is the cost to simply put it on celluloid. Advertising budgets often double the costs. Think 300 million before red ink turns to black. Granted worldwide takes and all the anciliary income from videos, cable sales, etc. usually allow films to at least break even eventually.

YEah sure. I can see it now...

War of the Worlds: A peaceful alien offers the entire world a utopia of peace, sex, drugs, and Kumbayah before the Evil Oil Cartel, Big Business, and Military Industrial Complex assassinate him.

The Fantastic Four: Four Superhomos fight Gay bashers and the Christian Taliban. Features a cameo by Pope Benedict 16.

Wake me up when Commieweird dies a horrific, painful death and Hollywood returns from the grave triumphantly and returns American values and conservatism to the media.

How do you know Monica Lewinsky leaves a bad taste? ;^)

I can tell the analysts why movie going is down - there aren't any good movies to see since The Incredibles. The Kingdom of Heaven is going down the tubes just like The Alamo and both for the same reason: Political Correctness. We don't have to pay to get PC from our tv news, but hell if I'm going to pay to have PC pablum fed to me.

The pertinent question is why more conservatives don't got to film school. There's certainly a market for a conservative vision. And I can't imagine 'War of the World' working with a friendly alien! Ever read the novel? The aliens were unthinkingly evil.

ROFL! WAR OF THE WORLD!? Oh man, I was thinking of some other movie, where the alien came to earth but the military shot him by mistake! Oops. He he he. :D

But I'ms sure they coyuld still f up. I've got it now. The Earth is a lush green paradise, lead by a benevolent world government that gives out free helathcare and drugs. Suddenly, evil industrialist aliens who exhausted all their resources for cold hard cash...

Well, you get the idea.

More conservatives should definitely go to film school and create Hollywood right in the heart of TEXAS!

Not really, they will have to do about $300 Million to break even. The Box office is a gross total, it includes the slice that goes to the movie theatres. That slice goes up every week (ie: 20% to the local theater the first week, 30% the second and so on).

This dog wont hunt...or pay.

Well, first let me give you some movie going tips that save money.
If you are a AAA auto-club member or member to some other things, many now offer pre-bought anytime tickets for only $5.
You know how prices are like $12 prime time...
So saving $7 could almost buy you a small coke at the theater.

I also have more reasons to stay home than most. I have one of those HD projectors that you would use in an auditorium that is 3500 lumens. I have also an HD-tuner/upscaling DVD player called a lst-3510a.

So, all that means I at home have an 8' high by 12' wide HD movie picture that is clearer than at the movies today. So going out is less fun than watching at home in my case.

I'm going to look though at the upcoming shows and will respond to which look interesting.

OK, I just did a quick review of what's coming through the summer on yahoo.

Based on what I see, this will be the worst summer ever for films. They are almost all total cr@p.

Outside of the two I mentioned, there's nothing good coming.

I'm not a real movie buff anyway. I watch movies on computer or th tube. Why drag my butt to a theater when I could watch it for free. Besides, only a few movies are worth buying and keeping.

Yeah, as long as CW stickes to their mantra, they'll never see another red cent from a conservative patriot.

Kingdom of Heaven might make up for it in Muslim countries and Eurabia. Just because it bombs here in the U.S. doesn't mean it won't at least break even.

The thing that's stupid about Kingdom of Heaven, is that no one really wants to see it. Redstaters don't want another Christian bashing film, Bluestaters are scared it won't bash Christians enough (and take pride in only watching 'arthouse' films).

I'm actually a bit surprised it isn't doing better. I figured that enough fellow Christians might have been duped into seeing it the first weekend, just by the (admittedly impressive) trailers. I guess the bad word of mouth spread quickly enough on the internet to deter ticket sales. That's cool.

Two comments: Humble French Blacksmith Orlando previously played a humble british blacksmith in Pirates of the Carribean, and a member of a humble race of Elven blacksmiths in Lord of the Rings..... Second, kingdom of heaven messed up, because they waited too long and didn't stir up the christian right enough. They needed a good boycott to stir up interest. Or maybe the christian right is getting some PR savvy..... When is Hollywood going to figure out that after 30 years of liberals messing with our public school education, replacing real classes with indoctrination, that the new generation doesn't know enough to even know what the crusades were, or Troy, or Rome. So they better stop wasting their money on fake re-enactments of real history unless it took place in this country or in the past 80 years.
