JERUSALEM, Israel -- Jonathan Pollard, an American imprisoned in the United States for spying for Israel, is seeking to be declared a Prisoner of Zion — a status that would require Israel to do all it can to get him released, his lawyer said Sunday.
Israel, which has pressed the issue of releasing Pollard with the U.S. government, has so far refused to assign him that status, which was originally created for Jewish activists imprisoned in the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 80s.
Pollard's petition alleges he was kept naked for more than a year in solitary confinement in subzero temperatures. It claims his U.S. jailers also soaked him with ice water, forced him to sleep on a bare concrete slab, and lied to him that the Israeli government had arranged his release.
His lawyer, Nitzana Darshan-Leitner, said Pollard has complained about torture to the U.S. Embassy since the outset of his imprisonment nearly 19 years ago, but this is the first time the complaints have been included in a legal document.
The document asks Israel's Supreme Court to force the government to declare Pollard a Prisoner of Zion, she said.
Asked what took Pollard so long to go public with the alleged torture, Darshan-Leitner said he did so after despairing of persuading the Israeli government to declare him a Prisoner of Zion.
Pollard was a civilian intelligence analyst for the Navy when he copied and gave to his Israeli handlers classified documents. He was not paid when his spying began in 1984, but acknowledged that Israel later began paying him a few thousand dollars a month.
Pollard was caught in November 1985 and arrested after unsuccessfully seeking refuge at the Israeli Embassy. His case has strained U.S.-Israeli relations.

It doesn't matter if they call him a "Prisoner of Zion" or "Susan" (like his cellmate); the best way to refer to Pollard is "traitor."
It's amazing he's still alive after such alleged torture. Naked in solitary in subzero temperatures for more than a year? Soaked with ice water, sleeping on concrete, and he's still alive? I'm afraid Mr. Pollard is exaggerating a little in order to try and force Israel to demand his release. The only problem from the American point of view is that Pollard is an American traitor, regardless of which country he sold classified documents to.
Pollard knew better, and perhaps his sentence was more harsh than other traitors, but he continues as a gadfly in U.S. - Israeli relations.
He sure sounds like he already has changed his religion.

Pollard spied for Israel. He gave them classified information. That wasn't his choice to make. I wonder if an Israeli offered us information that was equally as vital, if we would turn it down.
Simply put, he gave them the information, he was caught, he was sentenced. What on G-d's green earth does the King David Hotel have to do with that?

Free Jonathan Pollard!
Jonathan Pollard is accused of having given Israel information about the Iraqi nuclear reactor and the Iraqi program for attacking Israel with nuclear weapons. Why the U.S. had not shared this info with Israsel is an important question for future historians and theologans to grapple with. It's clear that Jonathan will be exonerated by history. The shocking double cross by prosectors with whom he struck a plea bargan is a travesty of justice.
Israel used the information to preempt the Iraqi nuclear threat to Israel and the West. Perhaps the U.S. would have provided the same information to Israel soon after Jonathan did in any case; one would hope that would have been the case. While the ends do not necessarily justify the means, Jonathan's law breaking was far, far lesser than others', yet his sentence was the harshest - life in prison. He loves the U.S. In contrast, those who were in fact out to harm the U.S. and passed information to the enemies of the U.S. walk free.
Jonathan was accused on passing information to the very strongest ally the U.S. has anywhere in the world - that was true then and remains true.
Actual traitors - people who have tranferred information to the enemies of the U.S. receive a fraction of the sentence that Pollard has received. Jonathan has been singled out and a life sentence is vastly disproportionate and a travesty of justice.
There is no other conclusion to come to but that Pollard's extreme Kafkaesque situation derives from anti-Semitic bias, a pattern for which there are, sadly, precedents in history.
A Christian finding religion in prison is seen as a positive development. Not so for Jonathan Pollard's increased practice of Judaism.
There are other reported instances of prison officials refusing Pollard humane treatment, even small requests, such as not allowing anyone to get him a new pair of frames for his old glasses to replace the broken ones whose metal digs into his face.
Too bad his accusations aren't true. The traitor would be dead.
He and his then-wife also profited nicely from their treachery as they were paid tens of thousands of dollars for the information Pollard filched from his position of trust. So much for his supposed idealistic motives. I think he should be put in the same cell as Moussaui, birds of a feather flcok together.
