Ted pushes 3-year visas for illegals
Boston Herald ^ | May 10, 2005 | Andrew Miga

WASHINGTON - Some of the millions of illegal immigrants living in the United States would be able to apply for renewable three-year visas under a plan being pushed by U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Kennedy is teaming up with GOP maverick Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to launch the massive immigration reform bill this week. Conservative critics are expected to consider such a plan tantamount to amnesty for illegal aliens - setting the stage for acrimonious debate on Capitol Hill over immigration.

``These reforms will make our immigration policies more realistic and enforceable,'' said Kennedy (D-Mass.)

The Kennedy-McCain plan is expected to include a provision to permit some of the estimated 11 million undocumented workers in America to apply for the renewable visas.

Illegal immigrants who have been in the United States for several years and who have paid taxes would be favored.

Some of those workers would even be able to apply for permanent legal residency after paying some type of financial penalty, according to a Senate source familiar with the bill still being finalized.

The far-reaching bill, which is an alternative to President Bush's immigration proposals and aims to bring together several other reform ideas already percolating in Congress - would also crack down on employers who hire illegal foreign workers and tighten border security. McCain has shared some details of the plan in recent media interviews.

Kennedy has long been an advocate of immigration rights, but he put aside a large-scale reform package in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

That is why I support the KYL/Cornyn Senate bill.

As a result, Kyl said, "We've got to come up with a structure that would permit us to take advantage of their (undocumented workers') desire to work here but to do so in a legal construct and not to reward them with any kind of amnesty."

Hey Ted, how do you get them to leave when their three years are up? Your just shoving the problem under the rug for three more years.

I support the building of huge apartment buildings for illegal aliens right next to the homes of Kennedy and McCain!

This sounds a lot like Bush's proposal from a little more than a year ago.

The first step in any meaningful immigration reform must be gaining control of the border.

Without that all we're seeing is political pandering to special interest groups rather than working to protect and strengthen the United States.

The border needs to be secured. We need to have the means to detect and deport illegal aliens. Without those tools, immigration reform is pointless.

Any program that would give preference to someone illegally in this country is unquestionably designed to benefit known felons.

I'm not anti-immigrant. I'm not anit-Mexican. However, our government has the responsibility to limit immigration to desirable applicants who fill a need within our Country.

That's not what they are doing.

McCain should pick Teddy as his running mate, as their views are so much alike. Remember that McCrazy wants to be our "Republican President", and since he wants to move the party towards socialism, I think they make a perfect ticket for all those moderates. When conservatives voice their opinions in the next election cycle, we will let the moderates know what we think of McCrazy. He's toast at the polls.

So we are going to pass a NEW law that “SAYS” we are going to ENFORCE the OLD LAWS!!!

I support it too. Make companies, both private and public (and the government departments too) liable to the tune of $50K for each incident on hiring an illegal. The foreigners here legally and hiring illegals, make them responsible too. Then deport legal foreign workers for hiring illegals after the fine is paid and do not let them back in this country ever! Hi-Res low-cost scanners are available to copy documents documents that are suppose to be official (visas and green cards), not to mention, the Social Security administration and State Department are available to cross reference all documentation at the time of application. There are only numbers and names to be checked with with those departments to include photos with the State Department. If our government makes it so no company will want to hire the illegals, then they will not come by no where the numbers walking in today. The laws are already on the books....enforce them.

If I could do it within government, I use a combination of taking the money from entitlement programs across the board like social security, Medicare, etc. on US citizens, and levy a 'illegal alien' tax on all companies operating within our borders to pay for the expenses now to include apprehension, trial, deportation and border security. Think that would quickly change the scenario?

Isn't that the Clinton way, when you get caught doing something illegal say I didn't do it, but I won't do it again, and there should be a law against it"?

You are right, there are laws already that need to be enforced with vigor and no new laws need be passed until the border is sealed and those that are now hiring illegals are brought to justice.

We have to burn up the phone lines to ALL Senate members to let them know their jobs are at stake if they support this legislation. For anyone who needs a review of Kennedy's first FAILED immigration legislation, read this! It's another disaster in the making.

The sad thing is that Kennedy and McLame even think there is a chance to pass this trash but thanks to people like Tancredo, it does have a chance. It can probably pass the Senate and all they need are a few liberal Republicans in the House to join with the Democrats and slip this bill through. Tancredo and his ilk are keeping anything meaningful from being passed so the only thing that has a chance is a left of center bill like Kennedy/McLame.

That is probably tancredo's objective, akin to jesse jackson and sharpton, keep the issue alive.

Exactly. Tancredo (and his worshipers) would rather nothing happen so he can keep grandstanding the issue, get attention from people like Lou Dobbs, and of course receive those all important donations to his master's (Pat Buchanan) PAC.

If people really want something done about illegal immigration, they would tell people like Tancredo to take a hike and work with reasonable members of Congress who aren't concerned only with themselves. I guess they could always try to get Hillary on their side. After all, she has a plan to control immigration.

What??? And they cannot spam FR with doom and gloom immigration threads and calling people who point out the fallcay, FROBL's, FOQNA's etc.

Sheesh dude, that's kinda of like asking chuckie schumer to give up the grandstanding in front of a TV camera, and you would get the same reaction if you asked chuckie schumer to abscond from the TV camera, a rat cornered.

Explain to me how any plan that granted illegals legal status could not be an amnesty. You can argue one plan or another is the best course of action or that deporting millions may be logistically too difficult but you cant change the meaning of "amnesty".

If the administration offered to compromise with or concede ANYTHING on this issue to those 100 members of his own party something could be passed tomorrow.
