"Senator Cedillo's proposed legislation would exempt illegal immigrants, and only illegal immigrants, from having their cars impounded, and would lower the fines levied against them for failing to purchase car insurance."

Near insanity, isn't it?

For whatever it's worth, local talk radio has abounded recently with callers complaining that when they or someone they know were in a wreck, the carload of presumably illegal aliens "didn't have a license, didn't have insurance, didn't speak English, and just walked away..."

How they get away with this, I can't explain- never been wrecked, but if I did that, I'd likely be hauled before a judge.

Here's the skinny as I understand it, based on freep-talk:

The illegals make up 30% of the prison space, right? But those are the guys the police bother to arrest and the judges bother to prosecute. Often, they are simply deported, because each local government doesn't want to be out the cost of locking them up. If the Federal Government took up the prison cost of illegals, then I bet you that the 30% would double to 60%. But maybe not.

Then factor in that there's no paper trail with illegals. They often hit-and-run in an accident or collision. If they get away, how do you find them? They switch plates and vanish. Fingerprints and DNA are normally worthless. These guys are harder to catch. That also helps double the actualy crime rate, from 30% to 60%.

Then factor in that foreign convicts can come here and be invisible, getting a fresh start with no past. That increases the odds of illegals being the criminals.

I think it's fair to say that it's quite likely, most felonies are committed by illegal aliens, and they are much more likely to get away with them.

Appreciate the info.

I'm still trying to puzzle out how I'd pull off the "just vanish from the accident" trick-- in our state, you have 30 days to get a license plate. Most people just write "tag applied for" with the purchase date, on paper, some dealers give you a temporary paper tag- but far as I recall, none of that has any legal meaning. If the police stop you for no tag, they comfirm that you are within the grace period, and let you go. Assuming you have a valid DL, and insurance... but again, in this state your insurance on the old car has a period of grace to cover a new vehicle for a while until you get a new policy...but...

In theory, you could buy a cheap car for cash, drive it for up to a month, then abandon it, without leaving an easily tracable paper trail.
