Researchers: Gay Men React to Scent Like Women

By E.F. Winslow Posted 5-10-2005

It’s Official. They really are “Girlie Men”. Scientists in Sweden have found that a compound taken from male sweat stimulates the sexual area of the brains of gay men and straight women, but not heterosexual men. In the study, which has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, scientists monitored brain topography while administering varied scents to a group of 12 heterosexual men, 12 homosexual men, and 12 heterosexual women. They reported a correlation between the reactions of the women’s brains with that of the gay men’s brains in the presence of a chemical derived from male testosterone.

Could it be that homos are conditioned to get excited from the smell of male sex organs ? Naw, it can't be that, it makes too much sense ..

So this squashes the claim that gay men wouldn't be attracted to heterosexual men in, say, military barracks.

The left is going to use this as an argument that homosexuality is not a choice but something you are since birth.

Here's my point. How many people like beer the first time they taste it? But, how many salivate from the thought of a tall cold draft beer now? Some things are acquired likings.

Does this study really say anything about whether sexuality is genetically based, or learned? Although virtually no papers are reporting it, the team leader and neuroscientist of the study, Dr. Ivanka Savic, made a point to explain that the study does nothing of the kind.

"I want to be extremely cautious - this study does not tell us anything about whether sexual orientation is hardwired in the brain. It doesn't say anything about that," Savic said.

"Scientists in Sweden have found that a compound taken from male sweat stimulates the sexual area of the brains of gay men..."

Have the chemical compounds of Gerbil sweat yet been analyzed?

Sweden is soooo ahead of the curve.

I suspect that it's a combination of nature and nuture. For most of us, including myself, the idea of homosexual acts are right up there with Barry Manilow records and Socialist politics in terms of inspiring sheer, utter disgust. I suspect some have inclinations, and then have these inclinations reinforced by their environment.

This is probably why one can't switch on the television these days without someone claiming to be a flaming whoopsie and demanding that we applaud him. Her. It. Whatever. Society is reinforcing inclinations. And don't take it as gospel that it's a good thing. Alcoholism is an inclination too.

Regards, Ivan

I wonder if they would find the same results if they studied the effects of certain smells on the brains of lesbians vs hetero women.

I get excited by the smell of White Shoulders perfume. I don't know how I would react if a man wore it. I may take a tester bottle with me to the Jiffy Lube next week and do my own experiment.

Pavlov's Dog

In this game, you will find out if you can train a dog to drool on command! Ivan Pavlov's description on how animals (and humans) can be trained to respond in a certain way to a particular stimulus, has drawn a tremendous amount of interest ever since he first presented his findings. His work paved the way for a new and objective method of studying animal and human behavior.

I heard he died of a drug overdose. I seem to recall he got a hold of some bad crack.

Johnlenin...the article specifically mentions Pavlov's dog to demonstrate the silliness of the argument that the stimulus-response in this case in any demonstrates a genetic cause. You are right on the money.

It took about ten minutes for me to acquire the desire for beer! :)
