Afghans riot over abuse of Koran
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | 5/11/05

Kabul: Three people were killed and at least 60 injured when police clashed with more than 5000 Afghans infuriated by reports that US soldiers had desecrated the Koran at Guantanamo Bay prison camp.

"We have two dead in our hospital and 47 wounded. Three of the people injured are in a serious condition," said Mohammed Ayob, deputy director of the public health hospital in the eastern city of Jalalabad.

"The medical university hospital, the second hospital of the city, has registered one dead and 12 wounded are in hospital. Some other people with light injuries were cared for and have been discharged."

Witnesses said police opened fire as the crowd rampaged through the city yesterday.

Jalalabad police chief Abdul Rehman said: "Initially the demonstrators were peaceful but then a group joined them and the mob turned violent."

Western security sources said the governor's office and those of several aid agencies including UNICEF, the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, were set on fire.

The US State Department said on Tuesday that the Pentagon was looking into a report in Newsweek magazine that interrogators at the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, kept copies of the Koran in toilets to annoy prisoners.

The protesters, which one police source in Jalalabad said numbered "maybe 10,000", also denounced US-backed President Hamid Karzai, shouting: "Death to America's allies" and "Death to Karzai" as well as "Death to Bush". US troops stationed in the city stayed in their base, witnesses said.

The reports have also infuriated close US ally Pakistan.

The mostly Muslim country's foreign ministry demanded an explanation while parliament and cricket hero-turned politician Imran Khan urged Washington to apologise.

Mr Karzai is due to visit the US this month where he said he will seek special long-term ties with Washington.

¡ The US and other countries have secretly sent scores of Islamist prisoners to Egypt since the mid-1990s, where they have likely been tortured, a human rights group said on Tuesday.

Human Rights Watch issued a 53-page report criticising Egypt as the world's main recipient of prisoners, including suspected Islamist militants believed to offer useful intelligence for the US war on terrorism.

The report, titled Black Hole: The Fate of Islamists Rendered to Egypt, identifies 61 people who have been transferred into Egyptian custody since 1994.

I hear all the Muslims in gitmo have been converted to Christians. Uh-oh! /sarasm

It's strange that they would kill each other in protest of where the koran is placed.

"Having a cult of personality is not akin to worship."

It's open for debate. The Germans loved this guy enough to institue the final solution. And most Germans, although not fully aware of what was going on, turned a blind eye to something they knew was evil. However, my point was that worship of Hitler approached a religion, while not attaining that status.

And islam is a cult.

Cult of death, cult of personality. Equivalence.

Moral relativism, equating Islam with Christianity and Judaism. You can think it if you want to because you live in a free country. That position would get you killed in Iran.

Mad Mohammad and his murderous minions are going to have a real fit if I'm able to complete project pigskin koran.

It's a copy of the whorely koran lovingly hand bound in authentic American Yorkshire pig skin harvested from a farm raised hog destined for the table of infidels.

The skin itself will be hand tanned using the brains of the pig in a process that leading mohammadan theologians call a miracle.

Bound within will be the fairytale of allah, blood thirsty demon and master of the insane pedophile mohammad and all of the fevered hallucinations that compose the most whorely book of the mohammadans.

Look for it in late winter of 2005 or early spring of 2006 (got to be cold to slaughter hogs) or whenever we get around to butchering Mohammad the Pig (yes, that is his name).

Everyone should go back and re-read ClearBlueSky's Post No. 40 because he understands this war better than anyone in the media or in government.

"I wonder if those on this thread making light of this would have similar feelings of joy if the bible or torah was used in the same way."

We wouldn't organize our churches to go out and kill innocent people...BIG DIFFERENCE!

The bible is treated much worse in the same countries which are demanding this high level of respect. The bible is often placed in hotel room where whores and john get together- American church don't go out in the community killing people in protest.

This is further supporting data that "mainstream Islam" is more than slightly unhinged.

Why don't we convert these people to Christianity? Doesn't it stand to reason that since Islam was spread by the sword and forced upon millions of Christians and Jews it should be "unspread" by the sword?

Mein Kampf was/is not a religious text. Big difference.

Mein Kampf was the combined ramblings of a pagan world view bent on destruction and evil. The Koran is no different.

Try reading the Koran. It's a manual for murder, rape, bigotry, and plunder. Calling it a religious text demeans the term "religous". Don't be fooled - the Koran is far more a political document like the Communist Manifesto than a religous one.

I'm a she- which makes your compliment even sweeter. Thank you. ;-)
It's a no-brainer, isn't it? The enemy is TELLING us what this is about and we go around with fingers in our ears saying ' no, no, it's not about religion.'
Would we have told Hitler that it wasn't about taking over Europe, or eliminating Jews?
The aggressor- the enemy- defines the reason for war. Ours has. Pretending it's about something 'safer' to imagine doesn't change the facts.

Why are some of us so intent on creating an enemy where totally unnsecessary? Look, I have the same skepticism and distrust of the Quran as you guys do. I know all about the passages and Muhammed. But it's a ton easier to accomodate the Muslims as long as they are not a threat to us. The majority of Muslims don't give two bits about America. They don't really care. We leave them alone and concentrate on anyone who takes up arms against us, and everything will be fine. Let me reiterate: leave them alone. The moment they attack us, respond in kind. this isn't a "Kumbaya" message. It is a message of acceptance and vigilance.
