Latino leaders seeing immigration downside
The Minuteman Project may not have succeeded in closing the U.S.-Mexican border, but it did seem to help close what has been an ideological gap between Latinos and those who claim to represent them.
The truth is that the vast majority of U.S-born Latinos oppose illegal immigration and support calls for increased border enforcement. But you would never know it from listening to professional advocacy groups such as the League of United Latin American Citizens, the oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization. Or from the public comments and legislative priorities of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, made up of the 21 members of Congress who are of Hispanic descent. In fact, much of what they have had to say on the issue comes close to advocating an open border.
That's troubling. One, the idea of an open border isn't wise or workable, especially after Sept. 11, 2001. And two, what good are these groups if they don't represent the people they claim?
But now, that may be changing, and it's possible that the credit for that goes to none other than those lawn-chair-sitting, binocular-carrying sentries: The Minutemen. Now that this volunteer patrol has accomplished its mission along the Arizona-Mexico border, it's planning to head to California.
The volunteers won't get a warm welcome from Assemblywoman Lori Salda×a, D-San Diego, who recently helped organize a rally downtown of nearly 100 people condemning Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for praising the Minutemen. No fan of private patrols, Salda×a called for more funding for the U.S. Border Patrol and even launched a petition asking the governor to support "trained, professional law enforcement officers" as "the best way to provide a safe and secure border for everyone."
That stance put Salda×a at odds with Latino activists who have criticized the Border Patrol and who don't seem to be willing to support anything other than an open border. The activists are wrong, and Salda×a is right. What's more, she's not alone.
Just a few hours after the rally, National Council of La Raza President Janet Murguia delivered the keynote address at a luncheon downtown honoring the Chicano Federation of San Diego County, a nonprofit community-based organization. Murguia said her group wants to ensure that immigrants in this country including illegal immigrants are treated with dignity but that it had no quarrel with the right of the United States to "decide who enters the country, and who doesn't" through both border and workplace enforcement efforts.
That is good to hear. And we can't help but think that one reason we're hearing it is because Latino leaders have glimpsed the alternative lawn chairs and all and they don't like what they see.
The minuteman project also proved the Mexican army is more than capable of policing its side of the border. :)
YES! Bush needs to act!
California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas need to deploy their National Guard along the Mexican border. We also need the US Army down there.
And the first three replies indicate we're moving the discussion away from illegal immigrants and toward Constitutionality, limited government, States' Rights, the Rule of Law...
And all because of some good ol' Conservative Grass Roots Activism in the guise of the MMP.
Thanks for the ping, HiJinx, and BTTT!
Thanks for the ping.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus seems like its just acting for votes, rather than for the welfare of the country (can you believe a politician would do that?). You are right on about the "open border" stance. If the borders were open, Latinos/Hispanics would have an easy majority in the southern border states and eventually the whole country. Congressional Police Power has taken a back seat to being re-elected.
No they don't. Wishful thinking.
To the extent that competition with Los Mojados causes them grief in the job market, they may oppose illegal immigration from Mexico or other "hispanic" countries. But if you drop that from the equation, it's a tiny minority. Like all nations, the Mexican nation and to a lesser degree the Latin American ethnicity has affinity for and emotional attachment to people they perceive as "them". They will not make technical distinctions based on whether someone came here legally or illegally. That is a perfectly understandable, and natural, reaction.
The sooner the Anglo-European soon-to-be-not-a-majority understands that, and does not engage in wishful self-deception, the sooner the problem will have the political will to be solved.
If not, it never will be.
"No they don't. Wishful thinking."
Virtually every one I know does.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!

Minutemen Patriots ~ Bump!
Well Bush isn't going to act and neither will the clowns Austin. In Texas our representatives are more worried about cheer leaders than the future of the state and the tax payers. They have no problem with encouraging illegals to come to the state, hey the average working stiff can pay for the illegals education, medical (which most of us can't afford)and when they are bad pay for their prison time. I have given up on the republicans doing the right thing.
Another difference that we haven't seen yet. The illegal crimnal Mexican aliens that we have so far do leech on society and cost the society billions while making individual employers a little cash but, on balance, they work and work hard. In that regard, they are like our parents and grandparents, they work and will blend in and their children will be contributors. But, how about if the next 10 million wetbacks are not? How about if the are lazy, dump, passive criminals who figure the gringo dole is better that no dole at all?
Think of your Village Green with the gazebo and the 4th of July picnic there. What would happen if over one weekend 1,753 illegal aliens camped on the Green and began digging and demanding food, drink and entertainment? What if we've already skimmed the best Mexicans? What if the next Mexicans, lazy, shiftless and dumb could only bring discredit on the ones who are already here?
Again, thanks for the ping!
What do you mean "if"? In every area of southern California this has already happened. Long ago.
I have to agree with you.
Reasoning amongst both both men, women and their kids.
With the women, terrorism protection and crime.
With the Vets, sovereignty and respect for our law.
With the Voters, I am an American and they have no business voting and deciding who should be elected in my country.
With the Students, they are taking my seat in college and my teachers time away from me.
With the drivers, They don't obey the laws and run anytime they have caused an accident.
With the Homeowners, I am fed up with paying for everything they want or think they need with increased taxes.
With the younger -13- to 20, I am fed up with their damn gangs and drugs. All the cops look at us as if we were illegal too.
One of the kids, a 16 yr old girl, actually went over to a cop who was watching her at the Mall and said, "I an an American just the same as you are so take your dirty looks and go somewhere else with them! If you want to know who is illegal why don't you yell, Border Patrol and see who runs?"
She is quite pretty, so I am not sure why the cop was keeping a close eye on her.
With all of them, the illegals don't care about America. All they want is what they can get from us and if we won't give it, they take it.
That is the attitude I have been able to gather up amongst Mexican Americans. It is quite close to mine.
Mainline Republicans who advise "tone down the anti-ILLEGAL immigrant stuff" insult Americans of Hispanic origin by suggesting that we must tolerate law breaking and defer to the corrupt government of Mexico, etc. lest we lose the Hispanic vote. Go figure.
Or, as Savage keeps saying ...
BORDERS LANGUAGE CULTURE
It starts with Borders.
One effect that I would like to see is:

Elected Officials Put on Notice
Were Coming for YOU!
By Rick Biesada
Last week, as we wound down phase one of The Minuteman Project (www.minutemanproject.com) on the Arizona, Mexico border, honorably, with our co- founders Chris Simcox, and Jim Gilchrist, being celebrated in Washington D.C. by Representative Tancredo, and his Immigration Reform Caucas, not much fan fare had appeared in the media, just as the 30th Anniversary of the Ending of The Viet Nam War was also being played down in the press.
Maybe the media doesn't want anybody to know about these events, their line of thinking is, if they omit the news, maybe it will go away. Well... maybe it will... but we're not going to let that happen.
I can't speak for Jim Gilchrist, but I'm sure he'd agree with me, a brother Marine, Viet Nam Veteran, and Minuteman... that we're not going to stand for getting screwed over twice in our life time.
The Minuteman Project has moved to the states, and I am the co- organizer of The Chicago Area Minuteman Project, along with Chicagolady. We are putting our public officials on notice, to enforce our immigration laws.
Phase number two and three of the Minuteman Project are now in effect.
I urge every Viet Nam Veteran to get involved, and to join the project as retribution for being sold out by the same subversive body who is now selling out our sovereignty by not enforcing our immigration laws.
The celebration for ending the Viet Nam War won't come until the treacherous leeches in public office are driven out.
These tyrannical parasites have been violating the public trust with reckless disregard for decades, so The Minutemen will be going on a mission to uproot them, just as Saint Patrick did, when he rid Ireland of all the snakes.
No more Mr. Nice Guy, when our families safety and security are jeopardized by partisan games in the interest of globalists.
With Congressional zeal to usurp our laws, they have forgotten the basic principle of our founders belief that this is a country of the people, by the people, for the people, the American people... and no other form of government will do... short of revolution.
Some of us American Citizens haven't forgotten the tenets of the foundation of our government, so we are putting all of our public servants on notice, to enforce the law.
If they violate the public trust, or engage in an act of treason, such as undermining the country in which they had sworn allegiance to... then we are coming for them, to bring them to justice.
With the ending of phase one of the Minuteman Project, The Minutemen volunteers are now returning home to their respective states with the intentions of enacting phase two and three of the Project under Minuteman rules. We will continue doing the job that our elected officials refuse to do against their sworn duty, and we will continue our civic duty until we get this illegal invasion resolved.
In Chicago, my co- organizer and I are recruiting volunteers to continue on with the Minuteman Project, and the good news is, it won't cost you any money to fly down to the border. We are going to stop the exploitation and encouragement of illegal immigration right here in our home state as we go after the criminal employers who hire illegal aliens against federal law, and to expose the treasonous public servants who have allowed these crimes to flourish as they violate the law, and violate the public trust.
Hey Rauschenberger - quit blowin'!
Minuteman volunteers who would like to participate in our operation contact us at: ChicagoMinutemanProject@hotmail.com.
Last Monday evening we launched our first operation. A protest against a pandering state senator who has intentions of running for governor. We demonstrated at a tavern which was being used as the meeting place for the Cook County 44th Ward, Regular Republican Organization, headed by Committeeman, Fuchs, believe it or not.
Well, we don't have a beef with these folks, but we will not tolerate politicians who violate the public trust, such as Senator Steve Rauschenberger, their guest of honor. It seems that Senator Rauschenberger cowered, and bugged out of the event when a press release was issued beforehand, about The Minuteman Volunteers protesting his vote to affirm the acceptance of the Mexican Matricula Consular I.D. Card, which is in violation of Federal Law. Our elected officials are violating the law with impunity and not being held accountable... until now.
Most of the meeting patrons weren't too happy to see us out there demonstrating with our signs in the presence of Tele Mundo, as they scurried into the doorway like sad sacks, with their heads hung down, looking at the ground, like little boys dressed in the first holy communion suits, as Rosanna had observed.
Losers, scampering fast, softly calling us names behind our backs, yet supporting untrustwothry candidates, not fit to hold public office. I guess that the last laugh will be on them, because we have just started our project and every kinky voting legislator and their supporters can expect regular visits from us, because we are going to hold them accountable, and we have the rule of law to either back us up, or declare anarchy. If our rule of law is not observed than we no longer have a constitutional republic, rendering all of our public servants null and void - useless.
In the Chicagoland area, we are going to continue to carry out The Minuteman Project by targeting criminal employers who are violating Federal Law. We are going to sue them under the RICO Act and turn them in to The Internal Revenue Service, who will gleefully prosecute them where income tax dollars are concerned.
These People Are Put On Notice!
We are going after the criminal mayors who have established sanctuary cities as safe havens for criminals against Federal Law; acting as conspirators for the crime wave that illegal aliens have perpetuated on our society.
We are going after every public servant who is in violation of his oath of office - to uphold and to preserve the law.
We are going to hold them accountable for their repugnant, and unconstitutional actions.
You are either for the American citizens.... or you are a domestic terrorist... and we're coming for YOU! May 8, 2005

The beat goes on!! This Latina is now the co-organizer of the Chicago Minuteman Project. Please tell your family and friends in Illinois to e-mail us!!
We are joining forces with
Latinas for Immigration Reduction, out of California.
We've only just begun!!
I would assume that other than the enclave in Detroit, the people you know are a significant minority where they live, and have assimilated, under heavy pressure. Used to be that way in the Southwest too.
And you live where the real feelings come out and speak the language and here the undercurrents.
It's not surprising. Why is ethnic nationalism difficult to understand? A lot of people delude themselves thinking that something that powerful of an emotion could be easily extinguished.
Not any longer. That was when the Pochos were a distinct minority relative to us gringos. They had to be that way.
But you won't find that dichotomy of belief in the bowels of Los Angeles, or even Redwood City. If so, why would approximately half the radio stations here now be Spanish? Why would Hwy 101 from Palo Alto to Millbrae have three huge billboards in Spanish with giant Mexican flag backgrounds? Wouldn't the assimilated "Mexican-Americans" (didn't know you could be both) be up in arms? If it is that they are outnumbered, then their opinions are irrelevant even if they are what you say they are.
I heard the same things you said 30 years ago from people in Tucson. There may still be quite a few like them in Arizona specifically because Arizona is turning out to be a special case. But....they'll be swamped soon too, and then we will see what their true feelings are when it is no longer a serious cultural or political liability to say "Who cares about the illegals? They're just like us".
Most of the hispanic people I know came here during WWII (their families) to build bombers at the big Willow run plant. They came here when America was very patriotic and immigrants at that time were loyal to their new country.
Pretty weak if in a city the size of San Diego an Assembywoman can only get a crowd of nearly (cute way of saying somewhere between 51 people and 99 people).
You are exactly right! My congressional district is an example of that. The district was intentionally drawn, so only a Hispanic could be elected. My congressman is a member of the hispanic caucus,(lower case intentional) three times I have walked up to him to talk to him, three times he has turned and walked away.
I am happy to hear that there is a group of loyal Americans that are willing to stand tall. How many folks have joined your efforts? I hope that there are at least a thousand patriotic heros in Chicago. Please keep us posted as to what you are doing and the results of your efforts. Hooaah!
It's capable, but is not allowed to do so. They turn a blind eye to such lawlessness, and Vicente Fox wouldn't have it any other way.
It's weak for a city that size and it's also weak considering the hugh population of Latino immigrants that live in the region.
>>If so, why would approximately half the radio stations here now be Spanish?<<
>> Why would Hwy 101 from Palo Alto to Millbrae have three huge billboards in Spanish with giant Mexican flag backgrounds?<<
>>Wouldn't the assimilated "Mexican-Americans" (didn't know you could be both) be up in arms?<<
up in arms? Literally? What are you asking?
>>then their opinions are irrelevant even if they are what you say they are.<<
The blacks will be the 1st to be outnumbered. Will their opinions become irrelevant also?
>>liability to say "Who cares about the illegals? They're just like us".<<
That just not true. I've lived and worked in the San Diego region for nearly three decades, and I'm exposed to and around people of Mexican descent every day. Those who work and pay taxes are vehemently opposed to ILLEGAL immigration as it depresses wages and overburdens the social services on which many of them depend. Those who want open borders are either politicos, have a vested interest in the ILLEGALS being here, or are ILLEGAL him or herself.
The southwest is not pro-ILLEGAL alien.
2. Yeah. The opinions of Blacks in California and the Southwest will become irrelevant, as they have begun to in places like Los Angeles, Oakland and San Francisco. In Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and West Texas, they never counted for much in the first place. Because in those places there just weren't that many of them.
And....how many Mexican flags did you used to see in neighborhoods and along freeways in 1970?
I don't recall any. And my family owned Avocado orchards in Escondido, where I spent part of my summers. So I was around for all the fun too.
But now I see it all the time. And Escondido looks like Mexicali.
I never said there wasn't more Mexicans in the southwest; ther is, thus the flags and such. I said they're not all pro-ILLEGAL immigrant, because they're not. Those who have jobs that would be threatened certainly aren't. Nor are those who see the drain on social services as being a threat to what they receive, which is many.
This just up on DRUDGE. I didn't want to post a separate thread without a link to story:
PAPER: Border Patrol told to stand down in Arizona... Border Patrol agents have been ordered not to arrest illegal aliens along the section of the Arizona border where protesters patrolled last month because an increase in apprehensions there would prove the effectiveness of Minuteman volunteers, WASHINGTON TIMES has learned.... Developing...
are a significant minority where they live, and have assimilated, under heavy pressure. Used to be that way in the Southwest too. Not anymore.
And you said No, that's not true, Southwest hispanics are by and large against illegal immigration, implying a large degree of assimilation.
How do you square that with admitting that more and more Mexicans means more and more of their national flags being displayed on our soil? It's a first order sign that assimilation has not taken place, and that they still retain nationalist feelings for the old country.
So I reassert my original post to all here. The vast numbers of hispanics -- mostly Mexicans -- are already mostly indifferent to illegal immigration from Latin American countries, and will eventually side with the "migrants", if they haven't already. It's a natural thing. Like planting the flag of your people on conquered soil.
Which is what the Southwest basically is, if the ethnic content of the elementary school I drove by in the high priced Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose this afternoon is any indication.
Duh-oh...I guess it was Freudian...or something...
