Part of a retaining wall has collapsed over the NYC Parkway, the 'Henry Hudson Highway'?

Could be a nasty commute home. No evidence of terrorism.

Lots of underground Springs under Washington Heights.

Did the Co-Op next to it have something to do with the landslide?

Time will tell.

Robert Moses designed the Henry Hudson Parkway.

I hope no kids were walking home from school along that path. I doubt it, though, as that would be dangerous on a good day.

Latent effect from 9/11 attacks. Looks like Wall Street to me.

That's what I was wondering about...people don't consider that a retaining wall is actually a dam, the hydrostatic pressure behind the wall can build up quite a bit, especially if the drainage behind the wall is old and it has become plugged up...

It's right after the George Washington Br. heading north, at the beginning of a stretch where there are these massive old stone retaining walls. And I mean massive... I always thought they look like ancient Roman ruins, with aches and aqueducts, etc.

NYC has had a very rainy spring. This, plus the age of the structure, would add to the danger of collapse.

It's all over the local news now and a traffic horror. It's just north of 181st St. and Riverside Drive/Henry Hudson Parkway.

Use alternate routes around Washington Heights and Northern Manhattan.

FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list.

Robert Moses was a genius. While growing up in NYC, I took for granted all the great engineering and architectural structures of that city. And the wonderful beaches and parks...so much of it the result of the cooperative genius of Moses and Olmstead.

I still miss NYC, even after being away for 50 years.

City engineers office is going to be a blizzard of memos and finger pointing for a few weeks.

That is huge. They'll have to redesign and rebuild for miles. A lot of real estate is going to disappear.

Is this the same place where a water main rupture or some such occurred in October 2003? I remember that flood because we had driven through there not long (a few hours IIRC) before the incident. It happened near the George Washington Bridge.

I used Microsoft Streets & Trips and plotted a straight line...came out to roughly 7 3/4 miles...

...but in NYC driving time, that's quite a good way away.

Do you remember when the bridge collapsed on the West Side Highway, I believe in the 1960s?

1. I sure hope no one is under all that!
2. There is a good mile of such retaining walls over there in Washinton Heights. Thhat's going to be a pain.
3. Anyone trying to go to or from Riverdale is screwed.

Well I did like Jones Beach and the Shore-Belt Pathway/Bike Trail in Brooklyn. Can't say I really cared for the Gowanus Expressway and what it did to the neighborhood, however.

Amazing how it took one arrogant pr-ck with delusions of grandeur (Nelson Rockefeller) to take out another arrogant pr-ck (Robert Moses) with similar delusions. Well, at least Moses never built anything as atrocious as Empire State Plaza in Albany, aka Brasilia on the Hudson.
