A mumps epidemic has taken hold in the UK -- primarily affecting people in their early 20s who did not routinely receive the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which was introduced in 1988, but also striking under-vaccinated children.
Number of Cases Recorded Soars 35-Fold in Two Years
Britain is in the grip of a mumps epidemic, public health experts announced yesterday.
Doctors have reported more than 2,300 cases of the illness in Scotland alone since the beginning of the year.
That is nearly 36 times the number of cases recorded in the first four months of 2003, before the latest outbreak began, and three times higher than the same period last year.
Researchers have warned that no opportunity should be missed to offer the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) jab to those at the highest risk of mumps, such as any patients starting school or university.
Writing in the British Medical Journal, the team reported:
"Most patients are aged between 19 and 23 and there is now the threat of outbreaks among under-immunized children."
Young adults born before 1988, when the MMR jab was introduced, would not have been routinely scheduled to receive the vaccine and have fallen prey to the virus. a d v e r t i s e m e n t
The researchers said the highest rate was seen in those born between 1983 and 1986, who were too old to be offered the MMR jab routinely, although some may have received one dose of MMR as part of a catch-up program when they entered school.
A study team from Guy's and St Thomas's NHS Foundation Trust reported in the BMJ that cases in younger children may occur due to the more recent fall in uptake of MMR.
Research published in 1998 caused widespread panic among parents when it suggested a link between MMR and autism -- a claim rejected by the majority of experts.
The researchers said the World Health Organization recommended immunization coverage of 90 percent to prevent outbreaks of mumps.
"But uptake of the MMR vaccine among two-year-olds in the UK fell from around 92 percent in early 1995 to around 80 percent in 2003/04.
"In some areas of London, as few as 60 percent of two-year-olds have received a first dose of MMR. This would account for our recent experience with mumps in younger children, " they said.
The team added that the initial success of the MMR program in controlling mumps had been compromised in recent years by sporadic outbreaks.
They revealed: "Since 2004 the number of reported and confirmed cases of mumps has increased, culminating in the current epidemic.
"This epidemic underlines the importance of ensuring that all children and young adults have received two doses of MMR."
Dr. Mac Armstrong, chief medical officer for Scotland, wrote to GPs last August, urging them to offer the injection to patients aged between 13 and 20 when they visited surgeries for other medical reasons.
However, earlier this year doctors branded the attempt to curb the outbreak as a shambles because national funding was not provided for the vaccination program, and instead GPs had to hold separate negotiations about the bill for the project with each health board.
Spread of the illness has accelerated this year. There have been 2,323 cases of the illness recorded by GPs in Scotland, compared with 727 for the same period in 2004 and 3592 for the whole of last year.
Dr. Claire Cameron, an epidemiologist for Health Protection Scotland, said: "At the beginning of the outbreak it was very much something that we were seeing in the west of the country, Greater Glasgow, Argyll and Clyde and Lanarkshire. Now other areas are involved. More recently there has been an increase in Tayside and Lothian and Grampian."
Dr. Cameron said she believed it would be extremely difficult to vaccinate enough people in the worst affected age group to prevent the virus from spreading.
She added: "Certainly mumps can be unpleasant for people, but it is a relatively mild disease."
The doctor added that, although there were fears that mumps could cause male sterility, such cases were rare.
They are just collecting more bio-weapon samples.
Ugh! I had the mumps. Painful as he**!
She added: "Certainly mumps can be unpleasant for people, but it is a relatively mild disease.
Sure beats autism. What is needed is not a white wash, but how to stop the cases of autism from shots. Then people will have confidence. The typical qualification of vaccines is to follow kids around for five days. No other drug gets off with that little testing.

Anyone you know a statistic?
IIRC, the mumps has a bad effect on your reproductive abilites if contracted after puberty.
Ya know... if England had socialized medicine, this never would have happened...
... oh, nevermind.
Not personally but a friend of mind knows someone who has just had a baby and has mumps and they put her in an insolation room for the delivery and then packed her off home virtually straight after the baby was born.
Yikes! No rest for the weary and the wicked don't need none!
That's tough! New baby and oh, by the way, please leave so you don't infect anyone. Never mind that her body is worn out from giving birth, caring for baby, and sick all at once. Ouch!
P.S. Is the baby okay?
The Mumps flourished for five years in the New York club scene in the late '70s. Their music drew comparisons to The Move, The Kinks and Sparks, and stylistic comparisons to the New York Dolls. They recorded a single in Brian Wilson's studio in Santa Monica, but they never quite hit their stride as recording artists. Although they recorded singles, they never recorded a full length LP, and narrowly missed the chance to have a record produced by John Cale of Velvet Underground fame. The band broke up in 1980.
MMR...people are forgetting that the last two in that, measles and rubella, are nasty diseases that deform fetuses, ruin heart valves, and otherwise make life unpleasant. They're coming back, too, as is polio and whooping cough. And there's still not enough conclusive evidence to show that it's the vaccine itself that's causing autism.
Reaping what you sow, I suppose. If you're not going to vaccinate, you better keep damn healthy.
That is correct. Orchitis (inflammation of the testes) occurs in probably 25% of all males who contract mumps to a certain degree. The risk of sterility is quite significant if the disease is contracted post-puberty.
Rubeola and rubella can cause very severe congenital abnormalities if a mother contracts the virus while pregnant and the virus crosses the placenta. In addition to heart defects, congenital infections can also cause deafness, mental retardation, and cataracts (in the case of rubella).
So you are correct that, if one is not going to vaccinate their children, they should try to ensure that their children do not risk exposure. However, the best thing is simply not to try and be "right" about it, because every additional parent that is convinced to forgo vaccinating their child will raise the risk for the child of the first parent.
One thing I wonder is that the upsurge in incidence of autism has been relatively recent. The use of the MMR vaccine has been instituted for years. I had a vaccination series, and I'm 25. How come it took so long after the institution of the use of the vaccine for the upsurge in autism to occur? I don't really expect to receive a sensible answer to the question, though.
Yes, it does. However, since there is no proven correlation between the 2, your point is moot.
The typical qualification of vaccines is to follow kids around for five days. No other drug gets off with that little testing.
You obviously have never been involved in a vaccine study. If you had been, you would realize how RIDICULOUS this statement is. A vaccine study has TONS of paperwork, requires METICULOUS documentation, and takes YEARS to fully complete (I've been involved in 2 Phase III vaccine studies on a professional basis).
There is tons of proof. You just need to look.
Google evidence of harm or read What your doctor may not tell you about children's vaccines.
You would think it is ridiculous but it is not.
Tell me about the DTP vaccine, Lyme Disease vaccine and the Rotavirus vaccine.
You may also want to download the Vaers database and check for hot lots like I have. You will be quit surprised.
The 175,000 entries in the vaers database only reports an estimated 10% of reactions.
No, what is riduculous is the whitewashing going on.
Finally, why is it that shot history is not part your med history. Many more reactions would be caught.
The reason why the vaccine rates have fallen in the UK is due to the work of Wakefield and o'leary ( who used the PCR DNA test to find the RNA component of the MMR vaccine of affected kids)
http://www.evidenceofharm.com/ppp/1-11.ppt
This is the direct link...
Slide 25 makes the point the best.
DTP was changed to an acellular pertussis due to some children having serious side effects from it (the current DTaP is widely used, and is safe); parents were told PRIOR to their child getting the vaccine that this could happen (informed consent). Rotavirus was yanked shortly after it was put on the market due to several deaths believed to be from the vaccine (I believe it was from intussusception; this didn't show up in the studies, which is why the FDA continues to monitor meds and vaccines after they are approved). Lyme vaccine is no longer manufactured (not sure why; probably from lack of interest).
The MMR has been given to millions of people, and is safe. The same with Varivax, Td, Hib, Hep B, Prevnar, and Menamune.
The reason vaccine rates have fallen in the UK IS due to the work of Wakefield, primarily because he has scared the parents into believing that the vaccines are dangerous. Admittedly, every chemical we put in our body is potentially dangerous (even water has the potential to be toxic); however, you have to consider risks vs. benefits.
I viewed the Powerpoint presentation. If "pink disease" was so prevalent, and mercury "poisoning" causes autism, why didn't autism rates skyrocket while mercury was used in teething powders? Also, cell phones may cause autism? Come on.....
DTP was pushed even after its problems were well known. That is the point.
There were so many lawsuits due to this vaccine, Reagan came up with comprise that set up the vaccine trust fund.
The clinton admin made it nearly impossible to get a claim from this fund.
If you check the Vaers database, you will find many cases of vaccine poisoning from lyme vaccine. There is a HUGE class action lawsuit, because the vaccine does not fit into the bogus trust fund.
Number of lawsuits does not necessarily equate to a bad vaccine. Anyone can file a lawsuit. I'll agree that there were a small percentage of children who had serious reactions to the vaccine (mainly several hours of inconsolable crying), and an even smaller portion who developed severe problems (mental retardation). However, the children who were spared DEATH from the diseases the vaccines were preventing is probably a much higher number than those harmed by the vaccine.
Around 15% or so of the Vars database is from Hep B vaccine.
Many people have been poisoned from it.
Classic syptoms are joint pain, arthritis, auto-immune reactions and raised ANA level.
A study in the UK found 2.6 times greater chance of getting auto immune diseases from the hep B vaccine over the NHS database.
Rota virus vaccine kills by blocking the intestines.....
Surely they did not just start giving the MMR in 1988. Good grief it was started here in the US around 1971. I remember because I was 12 years old and it was not given to children 12 and above. No reason because I had had rubella, measles and the mumps by that time. All who are aganist vaccinating their children I recommed a walk in a older cementary -------take a look at all the children that died before age 2. Won't see that now. If you live past your 1st year of life give thanks to vaccines because they have done more than all of modern medicine including the development of antibiotics to prolong the life span. The oral polio vaccine came out when I was a small child also. I was born in 1959 and my mother cried with relief. She had lost a sister to polio who was 13 years old. And people forget all the crippled and dead children. When there was a case reported in a town their was fear and panic and parents worried about their children tremendously.I still remember the whole community going to the school cafeteria and eating a sugar cube that the vaccine had been placed in. I still remember the tables stacked with sugar cubes. I was a fascinating sight for a child seeing everyone eating sugar cubes. Even the old men and women!!!!!!
The teething powders canard was debunked. forgot were I read that. It is not just the heavy metal load, it is also the number of pathogens that the kids are hit with at once.
Excuse me, I sneezed.
Not really true. Especially with overwhelming number of cases reported in the VAEERS database ( reports are dicouraged only 10% of reactions are reported, 2.5% in New York)
Informed consenet is bogus, since you cant get into school or day care without shots in most states east of the miss river.
Congressman Burton had TWO grand children hit with autism....
"The Risk-Reward Ratio For Childhood Vaccines Seems Small, But Politics And A Dearth Of Long-Term Research May Keep Us From Getting Clear Answers About Side Effects."
ABC NEWS Commentary On Vaccine Debate
Written by Nicholas Regush
The vaccine debate continues its breakthrough into the mainstream media. I hope the latest congressional hearing on childhood vaccines doesn't turn out to be yet another flash-in-the-pan noisemaker that fizzles into a lame, embarrassing (and to some communities, X-rated) genuflection to the status quo. These lawmaker health issue "hearings" typically end up pimping to the interests of high-flyer doctors and scientists and the pharmaceutical industry that adores and nurses them.
I'm sure the goal - exploring the vaccine safety issue - was well intentioned. Rep. Dan Burton, R-Indiana, the chairman of the House Government Reform Committee, became concerned after two of his grandchildren developed side effects and a child known to his family died following vaccination. Skeptical that the three events could simply be coincidence, Burton wondered how often this actually occurs.
Dig Deep, Dan. So along comes U.S. Surgeon General David Satcher to inform the committee about the benefits of mass childhood vaccination, in particular that vaccines have protected us from once rampaging diseases such as polio, measles, tetanus and meningitis. Sure, serious side effects can occur, Satcher said, but they're rare, and the benefits far outweigh any risks. In fact, vaccines are thought by the many to be safest, most effective medicines we have. Well, maybe so. I'm sure it would feel terrific to be as hopeful as Satcher about the risk-benefit ratio. But I trust Burton is not moved by knee-jerk propaganda any more than I am and is interested in real science. The problem, if he checks, is he'll probably end up asking, "What science?"
And that's when he should get some serious hearings in gear. I know, it's tough to brush up against motherhood and apple pie, but if he's truly interested in digging into vaccine safety, then I suggest he buy himself a very big, strong shovel. If Burton really wants to know how many vaccine side effects occur in this country, he will be hard-pressed to arrive at a satisfying answer. Studies to monitor reactions to new vaccines are very short-term, sometimes lasting only weeks after vaccination. And then it's up to doctors to report reactions to the FDA, which they do, of course, but this is voluntary and assumes physicians can actually make the connection between an illness and a vaccine.
Each year, the FDA handles about 12,000 vaccine-related reports, but readily admits that this represents only a fraction of actual side effects. Burton would also be strapped to find much research exploring how multiple vaccinations might affect the body's immune system, possibly leading to a variety of diseases, including diabetes and asthma. Where are the long-term clinical trials and laboratory research to probe this potentially hellish connection?
I presume Burton is aware that often when researchers suggest a link between vaccines and disease, they are attacked as less than scientific and portrayed as mavericks that are only frightening the public. Take the situation of Bart Classen, a Maryland physician who published data showing that diabetes rates rose significantly in New Zealand following a massive hepatitis B vaccine campaign in young children, and that diabetes rates also went up sharply in Finland after three new childhood vaccines were introduced. Classen took a poke from a vaccine advocacy group who put the word out to some of us at ABCNEWS that he was a lone wolf who had misinterpreted the data. Classen would be the first to recommend more research. But why bother promoting further research or debating the science when it's easier to protect your interests by smearing someone?
And then there were the British doctors who published data on 12 children showing a possible link between a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine and two illnesses, a new bowel disease and autism. They took nasty hits from both sides of the Atlantic from vaccine researchers who claimed they were needlessly frightening the public with information that was only preliminary. This happened despite the fact that the British researchers made it clear that they had not proven an association between the diseases and the vaccine, but that they felt it was important to raise a red flag and generate more research. I hope Burton also digs deeply enough with to find out how vaccine science and policy are orchestrated in this country - and by whom. It's not pretty.
In case you are interested in how vaccines cause arthitis here you go. Of course, we develop screening protocals IN ADVANCE to screen out those would have reactions, but that would cost money and not fit with all vaccines on the market are good mantra.
WEST CHESTER, Pa., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- A class action lawsuit filed
today in Pennsylvania claims the vaccine that prevents Lyme Disease causes an
incurable form of autoimmune arthritis and, for some, could produce symptoms
far worse than those brought on by the illness. "Mealey's Litigation Report:
Drug and Medical Devices" informed subscribers about the complaint today.
The complaint, filed in Chester County Court of Common Pleas, alleges
SmithKline Beecham (NYSE: SBH), manufacturers of the widely touted LYMErix
vaccine, failed to warn doctors and the general public that nearly 30 percent
of the population was pre-disposed to a degenerative autoimmune syndrome,
which the lawsuit says is triggered by contents of the inoculation.
"Once this autoimmune reaction is triggered, it cannot be cured and can
only be treated symptomatically for the remainder of the vaccine recipient's
life," the complaint says.
According to the class action, SmithKline (SBH) used high concentrations
of a surface protein called OspA as the foundation for its vaccine. When
bitten by a Lyme infected parasite, humans are not exposed to OspA protein.
The levels of OspA that enter the bloodstream at any phase of the three-dose
LYMErix vaccine, however, place patients classified by genetic type HLA-DR4+
at risk of developing a condition referred to as "treatment-resistant" Lyme
Arthritis, the lawsuit says.
Despite this "well documented relationship" between OspA and
treatment-resistant Lyme Arthritis, SmithKline neglected to include the
information in its widely disseminated promotional literature and insisted
LYMErix was safe and generally well tolerated, the class action says.
About one-third of the general population is HLA-DR4+ and risks
contracting the arthritic condition when exposed to the vaccine, according to
the complaint. The HLA-DR4+ trait is easily detected by a routine blood test;
however, SmithKline never recommended that doctors screen for the trait before
administering the vaccine, the lawsuit alleges.
The complaint further alleges that patients who are infected with Lyme
bacteria when they receive LYMErix -- whether asymptomatic or in the early
stages of infection -- could suffer syced
than if they had not received the vaccine.
SmithKline, the class action says, also neglected to inform doctors and
the general public that periodic booster shots beyond the series of three
vaccinations would be necessary to maintain immunity to the disease.
The class action includes counts of negligence, unfair trade practices and
a bid for medical monitoring of those who are placed at risk of developing
autoimmune arthritis but have not yet been diagnosed with the condition.
The class action complaint was filed by Stephen A. Sheller and Albert J.
Brooks Jr. of Sheller, Ludwig & Badey in Philadelphia.
Sheller said that in the wake of filing the class action, he expects to
file claims on behalf of individuals who received the LYMErix vaccine and are
now suffering from the autoimmune arthritis.
Thread please be asked to be prescreened for similiar markers if you get the Hep B vaccine.
It causes the same auto-immune condition. At a minimum you can see if your ANA is elevated after shot one, but before shots 2 and 3.

Thread:
Please be sure to be asked to be prescreened for similiar markers if you get the Hep B vaccine.
It causes the same auto-immune condition in some people. At a minimum you can see if your ANA is elevated after shot one, but before shots 2 and 3.
Here is a typical case on how to get LUPUS from the Hep B vaccine. Lupus destroys the kidneys in a high percentage of patients. Note that this and many other cases like it could have been avoided if the ANA were checked after the first shot or a better pre-screen for markers were developed....
Im looking for anyone who has come to have an auto immune disorder, AFTER having the Hepatitis B Vaccine. I began the vaccine in Nov. 2002. I am a Nurse in a Psychiatric Hospital, where we have a large number of patients with various forms of active Hepatitis. This vaccine was never ordered by a MD for me to take but suggested by the employee health Nurse, during my orientation. I read the information she provided to me ( I still have this) and NO WHERE on this information does it state, possible side effects could possibly lead to Systemic Lupus, chronic active Hepatitis or drug induced Systemic Lupus, which is possibly what I have. The ONLY thing listed for side effects are as follows "only 2 percent of those who have taken this vaccine have had an association with Guillain Barre Syndrome and some arthralgias".
I was perfectly healthy BEFORE this vaccine, never having taken any routine medication nor had any medical problems. This vaccine is the ONLY recent medication I have had. In the last 4 months (since having the 2nd vaccine in the series of 3), I have suffered from chronic fatigue syndrome; joint pain and swelling in ALL major joints (arthritis),shooting pain in my feet; pitting edema in feet; hypertension; headaches; dizziness; increased blurred vision; periods of confusion; tremors in extremities; numbness and tingling in hands and feet; restless leg syndrome; excessively dry skin and itching; increasing muscle weakness and problems with coordination, and insomnia.
I recently (about 8 weeks ago) began seeking medical attention for these complaints. the first MD, diagnosed me as having arthritis and gave me some medication without ANY diagnostic tests. The 2nd one, listened to me at least, and ordered some tests which revealed a Positive ANA; Homogenous type; Positive DNS-ds & ss as well as Histone Factor, 1:360 & CRP level of 7.2 which is HIGH. From the research I have done this is indicitive of having Systemic Lupus, chronic active Hepatitis OR drug induced Lupus. The 2nd MD sent me to a Rheumatologist that I saw today, and why it prompted me to seek help on the internet. The Rheumatologist does not believe I have any auto immune disease despite my history prior to this vaccine and despite my abnormal blood work, despite all the symptoms Ive listed above Ive had for the last 4 months. THIS Rheumatologist feels, if I "just loose some weight, most of these symptoms will disipate", since when does being overweight cause hair loss, tremors, numbness, blurred vision? ALL this blood work was re drawn TODAY ( he feels it is in error) and I HOPE he ordered additional testing. If he stills feels "nothing" is wrong with me after this, I will seek a MD until I find one who will listen to me.
In researching the symptoms of those who have been diagnosed with above illnesses, as well as MS,& Fibromyalgia. The "common link" to those who were perfectly healthy before to those who were diagnosed, were ALL after recieving the Hep. B Vaccine. The numbers are literally in the thousands, and Im sure even more as most of these cases were in 97, 98 & 99 with very few documented for 2000, 2001, 2002 that I can find online. In 95% of those cases, the MD refused to believe this Hep B vaccine "caused" these auto immune disorders too.
I would like to hear from others who have gone through this AFTER recieving this Hep. B Vaccine and having these similar symptoms, wheter you have been diagnosed with anything yet or not. If others have gone through the same thing, then maybe I wont feel as the medical community does... that THIS is just in my head....
NurseR.
PS Note that the statute of limitations run out after 3 years on vaccines for damages. All I can say these are dagereous vaccines AND PLEASE BE CAREFull with them. At a minumum, get your ANA checked after your first shot to minimize the damage. In most of these cases the real damage happens after the second and third courses which usually have higher titers.
You can download the VAERS database yourself as an access file.
http://www.medalerts.org/vaersdb/access.html
The government had to finally give in after many FOIA requests were filed.
You can check for 'hot lots'. You find that there is wide variation in cases reported by lot. Of course, we have to assume that the number of shots per lot were similiar even though DRUG companies refuse to give this information out, though they should.
You will also find that 28,000 of the 175,000 reported cases are from the HEP B vaccine from SmithKline Beecham.
You will also see thousands of reports from the SmithKline Beech LYME disease vaccine, which lends credibility to the lawsuit above.
And finally, I should clarify one thing. I would much rather have honest reporting and long term cause and effect studies to make these vaccines safe.
But we dont have that mindset, because we are told vaccines are ALWAYS good. Lawsuits are a very blunt instrument compared to good science, but until we get better studies, they are the only instrument available.
Here is why the MMR vacine is thought to cause Autism in the UK. This is why the credibility of the vaccine in the UK is so low. It is not by accident. Now, there would be no harm in using this new PCR test in the US on children who acquired autism after the MMR vaccine, would there? The mechanism is not totally understood yet, but I have read elsewhere that low nutrient absorbtion/heavy metal poisoning is suspected.
Source:
The measles virus has been found in the blood of autistic children, fuelling fears that their lifelong condition was caused by the controversial MMR vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella. One of the autistic children whose blood has tested positive for the measles virus is Angus Kyle, from Inverness, who is part of the legal case against the manufacturers of the MMR vaccine. Angus's blood was analysed using a new DNA test at the laboratory of Professor John O'Leary, at the Coombe Women's Hospital in Dublin. The blood test is called TaqMan PCR and can detect sections of the measles virus gene. Professor O'Leary, a molecular pathologist, published a paper earlier this year suggesting a link between the measles virus, autism and a related bowel disorder. He found fragments of the strain of measles from the MMR vaccine in the guts of 12 autistic children who had received the triple injection. The measles virus in Angus's blood has not yet been identified as the vaccine strain but as the 10-year-old has never suffered from the disease, it is suspected that it came from the MMR jab. In a letter to Angus's mother, Dr Andrew Wakefield -- the consultant who first raised fears of a link between the MMR vaccine, autism and bowel disease -- suggests the virus has moved from the gut into the bloodstream. He says Angus is suffering from a condition called 'persistent measles virus'. The letter states: 'This test was done to detect measles virus that may be being released into the blood from a site of infection somewhere in the body, such as lymph nodes in the gut. 'Immune cells that can harbour measles virus are continuously being exchanged between the intestine and the blood, so measles virus found in these blood cells would imply that it is being slowly replicated at the site of chronic infection, and released into the blood. 'In the peripheral blood sample taken from Angus, measles virus was found. The implications for Angus's health are uncertain.' Angus's parents, Sheila and Ian Kyle, paid & 230 for the test to be carried out privately. The couple are now campaigning for an estimated 20,000 autistic children in the UK to be given the same test on the NHS.

It's obvious this has become the Fooman Special anti-vaccine thread.
What was the topic again?
I don't think I've ever known anybody who came down with anything remotely tied to a "bad" vaccine.
And the funny part is my kids pretty much grew-up in the military life, which has vaccines to immunize you against other vaccines.
Not saying that what you posted isn't true, I just believe the anecdotal evidence is there that there is certainly more to be said for getting the vacccinations there is to not get them.
and why it prompted me to seek help on the internet.
Ooooo-kkkkkkay.
No, it wasn't just "cleaned up". They changed the pertussis portion from a whole cell pertussis, to an acellular pertussis. Totally different vaccine.
Well then why did you refer me to this PowerPoint presentation if it isn't true?
