Invoking the name “Martin Luther King” and screaming “Black Power!” a gang of up to 30 black teens attacked four white girls in Marine Park in what police are saying is not a bias crime.
The March 30 attack was a hot topic at state Senator Marty Golden’s recent public safety forum.
According to witnesses and parents of the victims, four young girls from St. Edmund’s had the day off from school due to Easter recess. They were playing basketball during dismissal from nearby Marine Park Junior High School, when several Marine Park students demanded to use the court.
After adults intervened and asked them to wait their turn, the teens left - but returned in a pack of up to 30, both boys and girls, and stormed into the park.
Witnesses say the attackers were all black and called their victims “white crackers” during the bloody melee, which raged for almost 20 minutes.
“This is not being looked at as a bias crime,” NYPD Deputy Inspector Kevin McGinn said at the meeting.
“When I pulled my car up to the park, I witnessed a pandemonium I’ve never seen in my life,” said Debbie, a mother of one victim who asked to remain anonymous for safety reasons.
Her daughter ran to the car, screaming, “They’re going to kill us,” Debbie recalled. My daughter was so scared and kids were running around like crazy.
Pursued by dozens of teens, some of the girls were “literally running into traffic to save their lives,” she said.
One girl made it as far as a nearby house, but was dragged by her hair back into the playground by a “wolf pack of children,” Debbie said.
The St. Edmund girls were bleeding and beaten to the point where they had cuts, scrapes, footprints and dirt all over them - and the attackers surrounded her car and started pounding on the windows as Debbie tried to herd the terrified children into her vehicle.
Two girls were hospitalized - one with a broken nose and one with a head injury, according to Edith, the mother of another girl.
According to Lt. Mark Molinari, from the 63rd Precinct, five of the assailants, who attend Marine Park Junior High School, were arrested and charged with misdemeanor assault. But since the attackers are all under the age of 16, they are facing charges in Family Court, and were arraigned last Friday.
“I always felt safe in the area and after hearing about such an incident, you start thinking what else could happen. These situations should not be happening, not in Marine Park, or anywhere else, and the safety of our kids should be of most importance,” said Denise Williams, a parent from Gerritsen Beach.
“It’s getting progressively worse in the community - these types of gangs are not only taking away our parks, they‚re ruining our neighborhoods,” said parent Cathy Miller.
“Nobody expects their child to go to a park and get beaten, with footprints on her head and arm, everyone just wants their child to be safe,” said Edith. “Everyone should have the right to be safe from teens, to small kids, to seniors, to mothers with strollers, no one should fear of being beaten while enjoying a day in the park.”
The 3 victims should take firearms training.

Why isn't this considered a bias/hate crime? We're the races reversed, can you imagine the attention it would receive? Makes me wonder how many black cops beat up white people? These thugs may be only juveniles but eventually they'll be 18 and I'm pretty sure the majority will be in prison soon after.

If I recall correctly, MLK's claim to fame was the advocacy of non-violent protest. Invoking his name while attacking someone is a measure of the ignorance of the attackers, especially of their own cultural heritage.

Well based on that I have to agree. However, you can be Howard Stern or Rosie O'Doughnuts and have a permit in no time. It's an NYPD thing or maybe a nutty DA thing.
This doesn't sound like bias or prejudice, but pure unadulterated racial hatred. Bias is a preference for one over another. It is inherently subtle. Prejudice is deciding on too little evidence, as in assuming a Black person would make a poor worker, merely by virtue of his race.
Can you imagine if the roles had been reversed,and the victims had been black?The msm would be beating their collective chests bemoaning the rise in racism!This would be front page news across the nation.Race pimps like Jesse and Al would issue statements on the sad state of race relations......

Why not? And, why does he use the term "bias crime" instead of what we constantly hear: "hate crime"?
The only conclusion white people can come to is that whites are being treated as second class citizens in New York because of liberal ideology which protects one class over another.
Still, if liberal white New Yorkers allow this type of law to continue without protest who can say that they haven't brought it on to themselves?

I remember this same thing happening to me in Rochdale. Thankfully we moved out right after and I didn't have to tell my parents either!
I can remember after a bunch of a-shole white kids in Howard Beach chased a black kid into traffic. For the next month, there were several VERY violent assaults of blacks on whites, including one that occurred to the older brother of a classmate. Of course, NONE OF THIS was reported in the press.
It was in the press a while back. Jesse Lee Peterson talked about it before on his show.

Racial violence is typically at its worst when a neighborhood "changes." Although I believe that Marine Park remains a largely white area, it borders the Flatlands which have become increasingly middle class and black. My guess is that these kids were likely bussed in from Brownsville, which is a scary place for ANYONE regardless of race.
good observation... when we left Rochdale it was 1980 and I drove through a few years back. It's so tragic. Crack epidemics and liberal democrats don't mix.
BTW, did you catch the New York Magazine article about white people moving into Brownsville and similar neighborhoods? There's a big problem amongst the homespun about yuppie flowerboxes and commuters gentrifying the area (as if that's a bad thing).

The West Hempstead line of the LIRR, which stops but a few steps from the house where I grew up, goes through Rochdale Village after leaving Jamaica.
I know, (sigh) I just like to hold out hope that even the greatest racist of our time can see the light and learn the error of his ways.

Really? I didn't know that. I took the train home last night and around the train station the creatures comes out but I was surprised. Not as much drug dealing as in previous years.
I remember one of my coworkers who grew up in Bed-Stuy told me that when a white girl (from FRANCE!) moved into their building about four years ago, her mother grabbed her (my coworker) and the rest of her family to look at her out the window, as whites living in Bed-Stuy were inconceivable to many. Now, there are many, particularly even as Fort Green has gotten pricey in terms of rents.
Bed Stuy has some of the most gorgeous brownstones in the city, better, IMHO, than those you see in Park Slope. Brownsville, on the other hand, is mostly projects and a few tenements.
BTW: I live in Yuppie Hell right now, but have reconciled myself to the fact that the only neighborhoods you have left in urban areas are either latte-lands or ghettos. Archie Bunker/Tony Manero neighborhoods are basically gone.
White people from other countries don't have the preconcieved notions than white people here do about those places. The areas are better off for it as much as some people hate it. Harlem is really diverse and very trendy and the most affordable place to live in. Lots of Australians and Kiwis moving there too.

Harlem has changed ALOT over the past 20 years. First the Dominicans moved down into West Harlem from Washington Heights, than the Buppies and now the white yuppies. There is a good reason why Rangel may be the last black congressman from that district.

Canarsie and the Flatlands have REALLY CHANGED since you were a kid I bet. They've even changed since I was a kid (and I'm 29!). It is amazing, however, how Midwood maintains a large Jewish population, although nowhere near as large as when you were a youth I can imagine.
The orthodox now pay $1mm+ for the old wood-frame victorians I looked out on from my apartment on Ocean Ave.
The apartments on Ocean Avenue are now a mixture of Russians, Pakistanis and Haitians, at least as of six months ago. That mixture has held stable over the past 10 years.

Don't you know? Only white, heterosexual, men (and women to a lesser extent) can be guilty of a hate crime.
This is very real, and was a frequent occurrance during the 70s and 80s (racial violence was less frequent in NYC during the 1990s). When it first occurred, Freeper Yehuda was nice enough to post the story. Few Freepers took notice, as they were busy obsessing over Schaivo or illegal aliens at the time.
