Chould Newsweek's source should be arrested?

Shouting "Koran Desecration" in a crowded Theater

Dear FoxNews Watch:

Newsweek's "apology" says that its information about flushing a Quran down a toilet came from "a knowledgeable U.S. government source." This is no different thatn shouting "fire" in a crowded theater resulting 16 dead and hundreds wounded. A government employee unnamed source, (knowingly or otherwise) spread anti-american proganda that resulted directly in numerous deaths and hospitalizations.

We should investigate to see if any laws were broken, and, at the very least, his/her identity should be revealed so neither the media nor the American troops ever trust this person again.

Quote:

Two weeks ago, in our issue dated May 9, Michael Isikoff and John Barry reported in a brief item in our Periscope section that U.S. military investigators had found evidence that American guards at the detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had committed infractions in trying to get terror suspects to talk, including in one case flushing a Qur'an down a toilet. Their information came from a knowledgeable U.S. government source . . .

I'm doubting they even HAD a "source." I think they made that part up as well.

CBS made up the memos, why couldn't Newsweek create a "source?"

I agree with you and others on this thread.

Newsweek is culpable, and should be prosecuted. Now.

As I said, I do not defend Newsweek. They are despicable. However, I do not give the crazy devil-worshipping muslims a pass on this one.

Yes, they are. We've been at war with these people since 2001 and Newsweek knows how volitile they are. The fact that they published this, knowing the outcome, means they committed MURDER.

Highly doubtful. Unless you can show that Newsweek knew that this story was false and also knew that such falsehood would lead to deaths.

Poor factchecking? Probably. But that's not a crime.

I remember Mike Wallace telling the Ayatollah Khomeini that Anwar Sadat said that Khomeini was not the true leader of Islam. Khomeini issued the fatwah on the air and soon after, Sadat was assassinated. Wallace was an idiot. This was intentional.

I still like to know how you flush a book down a toilet. It would either have to be a very tiny book or very big toilet.

Exactly. I'm glad to see SOMEONE state the obvious.

Any mother of a toddler knows exactly what will, and what won't, go down a flush toilet. Matchbox cars, apple cores, Fisher-Price people, pencils and sippy cups, will NOT fit down the toilet. I can substantiate my claims by a quick perusal of my plumber's bills from years past.

AND they should be prosecuted for negligent homicide! Isn't it manslaughter if your carelessness kills somebody? This is not just a civil matter, this is a crime.

The Jenny Jones program was eventually found not liable when some guy shot another over an expose on that tabloid program.

Otherwise, all some whackjob has to do in the future is blame his actions on something he read. Like your words maybe.

You're on target--not only should the families of those killed sue Newsweek, but the federal government should also get in line with a lawsuit. This was not merely a simple mistake--Newsweek failed to practice a simple rule of responsible journalism: Double check your facts before going to print.

Because Newsweek was so hot to go to press with a story given by a "credible source", we now have a bunch of extremists who have the excuse they were looking for to declare Jihad against the US.

In case the boneheads at Newsweek (and all the other magazines of that ilk) haven't heard, terrorists are not a group to be toyed with. A paltry apology for not getting their facts straight means NOTHING to those that harbor ill will against the US.

Tear out a page, wad it up, flush. Repeat until done.

You have accused the Muslims of having a hair trigger. You should know that this accusation is apt to set them off on a violent rampage. You have commited the same offense you accuse Newsweek of.

Aljazeera repeated the Newsweek claim. They have to know that it will incite the hair trigger Muslims too.

I think what Newsweek did was despicable against the American guards, but I hold the rioters responsible for the consequences of their illegal actions.

Actually, I just heard on Fox News that a detainee had been flushing pages of the Koran down the toilet 'in protest' of whatever.

Then, how, pray tell, did Newsweek manage to turn this ""story"" around to read that it was a US soldier/guard that did the flushing? Answer: they LIED.

Time for Newsweek to GO the way of the dinosaur.

Bub-bye NewsWEAK!

Exactly. The people we're dealing with don't NEED an excuse to behead Americans. But now, they've got another one to use against Americans everywhere.

Thanks, NewsWEAK!

Should news organizations be forced to reveal their sources?

Yes!

If the sources don't want to be revealed, then don't use their stuff.

Seems simple to me.

Reporters are not priests or doctors and their vocationis anything but holy.

Then rely on the US government's weak kneed liberals to come to your defense...

Never accept the consensus of the Washington intelligentsia, which looks backward to past failures, not forward to future successes.

Seriously: I think that there might be a simple solution. Anyone who prints a hardcopy report on newspaper or broadcasts via radio or TV, should swear under oath to the veracity of their report. If they lie, prosecute them for perjury.

Wait. No. That wouldn't have worked in this case or in RatherGate.

Hmmm. I have no solution, other than my proposed Ministry of Truth.

Elect me Dictator, and I'll show you what-for.
