Here is how the game is played:

We have to do everything we can to hold him otherwise other spies in our country will be encouraged.

Israel has to appear to do everything it can to get him out, otherwise their spies will become discouraged.

Until there is some strategic importance for releasing him he will stay where he is.

Bush and the GOP would be committing political suicide if Pollard was released on their watch.

They should put a sturdy rope in his cell, and make sure the light fixture is strong enough to hold him.

Pollard is the only one who can open the safe in Jerusalem where about half the secrets he stole are hidden. The safe is rigged with destruction devices should it be "tinkered" with, so Pollard is necessary. The Israelis already have buyers for most of what Pollard stole but need him to finish the package and seal the deal.

You also have the problem that all the other Israeli spies who are looting military secrets from the US that can be sold on the open market are getting nervous. Sure, the pay is OK and the pension and retirement benefits are pretty good, but none of the Israeli spies in the US want to do life in a federal prison.

Pollard's release is necessary to keep the other Israeli spies in the US happy and stealing. This is a major subject every year at the Israeli spy temwork building meeting held, of course, in a secret place in Virginia. The other spies all kvetch about what is being done to release Pollard so he can enjoy the fruits of his crimes.

One thing I can admire about the Israelis. They take care of the people trying to take care of them.

Dear Israel,

If it's really important, we'll tell you. Now stop biting the hand that feeds you.

Signed, America.

(1) There is absolutely nothing in it for the US in terms of its international position if we release Pollard.

(2) There are definite negative domestic consequences for the Republican party if a Republican President releases this traitor.

(3) Sharon knows this. He knows that there is nothing he can offer the Bush adminsitration that will make freeing Pollard worth it.

(4) Sharon will continue to make the attempt because it is good domestic politics for him in Israel.
