'Grandma' Mae Magouirk dies; 81-year-old was at center of post-Schiavo euthanasia controversy

Ora Mae Magouirk, the 81-year-old Georgia widow at the center of a contentious family fight over her medical treatment and right to live, (link broken in original) died of a stroke today at approximately 8 a.m. Eastern, at a nursing home in LaGrange, Ga., according to her nephew, Ken Mullinax of Birmingham, Ala.

Mullinax told WorldNetDaily that his aunt's condition had improved considerably since her ordeal last month, but took a turn for the worst Wednesday when her vital signs began to weaken. On Sunday an apparent stroke hit her, causing her to have difficulty with speaking, and her blood pressure dropped to 60/30.

She died surrounded by family, including her brother, A.B. McLeod, 65, of Anniston, Ala., who had spent eight hours with her Sunday, Mullinax said.

Didn't see this posted yet. Since Mae was apparently not told of Beth Gaddy's treachery (per full article), it would seem likely that Ms. Gaddy might keep the ill-gotten gains.

She was starved, denied water for 14 days. That's what did her in. Left her weakened, her granddaughter had her starved.

It couldn't have done an 81 year old person any good whatsoever to be starved and dehydrated for 2 weeks.

Imagine how that weakened her.

Since she obviously put the lie to the grandaughters claims by recovering and speaking, could she be charged with attempted murder?

"Since Mae was apparently not told of Beth Gaddy's treachery (per full article), it would seem likely that Ms. Gaddy might keep the ill-gotten gains."

Read closer.

""Although she was cognizant, speaking, sitting up, eating/drinking and communicating until her last day alive, her family had decided not to tell her of the terrible ordeal she had endured at Hospice LaGrange until she was discharged from the nursing home. She was spared this final pain by God," Mullinax said in a press statement.

Since she was died in the nursing home, I would think that would mean she was not discharged and thus not told. Did I misread it?

Rest in peace, Grandma. It's pretty hard for anyone to survive starvation, dehydration, and massive amounts of narcotics, nevermind a person in their 80's. I hope that the greedy granddaughter doesn't inherit a dime.

Death is hard enough to take when natural, but to have to survive a loved one's intentional death is horrific. I'm glad that the Lord took her instead of Beth Gaddy.

Rest in peace, Miss Mae. Our love is with you.

Is this what it's coming to? When someone who is old and sick declines water and food...we're supposed to force feed and hydrate them? I want an honest answer. Are we going to force old sick people who are obviously circling the drain to live to satisfy the sick wishes of total strangers?

LOL. You ignorance of this specific case is breathtaking. Please examine yourself for suicidal tendencies and death wishes. Many project these tendencies onto others and think others also don't value life and shouldn't value life.

Perhaps you should inform yourself. Mrs. Magouirk had a living will that said she WANTED food and hydration. Her granddaughter who had power-of-attorney (not to make health decisions) got the medical establishment to pull her feeding tube DESPITE what Mrs. Magouirk's living will said. That is an honest answer in regard to the circumstances in which this lady found herself. She was rescued before she died by her nephew and her sister (not exactly "total strangers".)

Are you in favor of snuffing disabled people despite their wishes if they are old and become ill to satisfy your "sick wishes?" I want an honest answer from you.

Her living will did not match the Georgia model, and was ambiguous as to what is being requested, but her condition did not merit removal of food and water under in her condition regardless.

How will YOU play God? Will you give food and water to the hungry and thirsty or will you deny food and water to the sick and feeble?
Providing water and food are acts of love. We give them to our babies and to our profoundly disabled. We deny them when we are ravaged with bitterness and malicious intent.
Thirst and hunger are increasingly painful and terrible. Regardless of our condition, our bodies demand nourishment.
Your vile intent to flush the feeble describes perfectly the condition of your soul.

Yes, you are correct. She needed a feeding tube and was denied one by her granddaughter. Once she was transferred from the hospice to the U. of Ala., she was rehydrated through an IV and was then subsequently able to eat again.

Can you tell me where you found this info? I can't locate anything that says her living will was not a legal document or that it was not specific, etc. The only articles with any info concerning her living will that I have read are WND 4/09/05, David Kupelian, Grandma airlifted to Medical Center; WND 4/7/05, Sarah Foster; News.Telegraph, 4/17/05, Jacqui Goddard in Miami. None of them say that there was anything legally wrong with her living will. Everything else is a blog or forum as I don't think this made it into the MSM. Thanks.

sc: Her "Living Will" did not match the Georgia model...
Her ordeal also serves to illustrate the practical
unworkability of so-called "Living Wills" Back in June
of 2004, Kathleen Kerr reported in Newsday that the living
will is a failure. (Newday June 21, 2004), with a list of
experts saying so, even bioethicists. And there's more
than enough reporting that indicates that hospital staff
do not inquire as to the provisions of a living will, but
regard it as a blanket "Do Not Treat" request. See
Gordon Watt's article http://hometown.aol.com/gww1210/
LivingWillsAndPVS.html

The search for the "right" document is not the approach to
take. We need to work for disallowing any dehydration/
starvation procedures -- be they "requested" or not.

And there she died from a stroke caused by the original problem ...aortic dissection. Her La Grange physician was correct in his diagnosis that Mae was terminal at the beginning of this fiasco.

Hi Fred. Yes, I got an email late Sunday that Mae had died, God rest her soul. I imagine that her ordeal was very hard on her and may have hastened her death. But still, she died under good care, with food & water in her belly and family at her side. At God's appointed hour. I sent a peace lily to the funeral home for her visitation earlier this evening.

I cannot believe some of the remarks by idiots and sadistic bastards in this thread! Hey you godless cretins... I've got a news flash for you: WE ARE ALL TERMINAL. Maybe later I'll go plug my neighbor full of lead. Then I'll just calmly explain, "Well, he was absolutely, positively, going to die some day. I just decided to pick today for him."

Thanks for the reply Sally, believe me, I understand your anger.I'm happy too, that Miss Mae passed away with her family around her in a hospital where she was being cared for and wasn't starved and dehydrated to death in a hospice, where she was refused even eye drops for glaucoma, which is very painful. Ken obviously didn't want to distress her by telling her what happened, proving once more what a decent human being he is.
We'll never know how much longer she might have lived if her granddaughter hadn't arranged for Miss Mae to 'go to Jesus' and she wasn't sedated with doses of morphine for the journey - a pox on Gaddy and the sadistic bastards on this thread.
Nice to know you sent a flower. I'll send a prayer.

"It's pretty hard for anyone to survive starvation, dehydration, and massive amounts of narcotics, nevermind a person in their 80's"

I'm not surprised that she passed away. That was too much stress for her body to handle. Of course the death freaks, who place no value on life, will say they should have just let her die of dehydration/starvation(sick), because she was going to die anyway.

I don't know what happened to people, that they have become so calloused and cold. They can't understand why it's wrong to starve and dehydrate a sick or disabled person to death? These are the same people who hold vigils, and shed tears, begging to spare the lives of vicious killers on death row. It makes no sense at all.

As for Mae's family- I hope they have made sure- since they are older themselves- that there is no way the "granddaughter" can ever end up as their guardian. They should make it clear that she has no rights and is cut off completely.

Rest in Peace with the Lord Grandma Mae. At least she died with her family at her side, and from natural causes.

That's another lie the death cultist's are trying to put over on people- that a person can be kept alive indefinitely- not true.

When someone's time is up- they shut down- the whole body shuts down- in spite of every medical intervention.

I don't have a reference handy, but one of the longer threads about Ms. Magouirk included links to a collection of documents including her living will (scanned) as well as a link to the Georgia statute which gives a model form for a living will. The line spacing and the wording of the second item in Ms. Magoirk's copy are changed so that a quick reading of her version would yield an interpretation opposite what one would get with the model form.

Link to the general vicinity below. There is substantive discussion relating to the language of the living will as early as 2319, and as late as 2399.

Mullinax played you gullible drama queens like a cheap fiddle. Mae was terminal at the beginning, was placed in hospice, received nourishment, was uprooted by a professional media busybody, flown to Alabama, died from the original illness. The granddaughter did nothing wrong but was thumped mercilessly by some so-called Christians here.

To: supercat; All

I tried to post some common sense when all of this began....some will probabley remember me. Anyway, I am not a family member, but a resident of LaGrange and an family friend. Ms. Gaddy and her familydid not jump to post like Mr. Mullinax did, but here is the proof Mr. Mullinax had his motives to save Mae...please read statement produced by Ms. Gaddy's Family.

I would just like to say that I am a member of Beth Gaddy's family. For those of you who have posted these articles about her on this website, it would have helped if you had the WHOLE stry and truth about this situation! For example, I noticed that Ken Mullinax FAILED to tell you all that his mother (Mae Magourik's sister) shared ownership in some rental properties with Mae and that he and his mother had not been sending Mae her share of the money made off these properties for a long time! Poor Mae and called and asked for her share of the money and they never would send it! It is many peoples' opinion that Ken and his mother wanted Mae kept alive for the very reason that they knew if she died, they would have to buy out her share of these properties, and they didn't want to have to shell out the money!!! I would also like to say that for someone who cared SO much about his Aunt, Ken did not come to the funeral today. Ken and his mother had been stealing money from Mae for a very long time and it is my opinion that ANYTHING he has to say about Beth Gaddy should be researched VERY well before it is posted, considering that he is a THIEF!!! Maybe you "reporters" should have done a lot more research before opening your big mouths. I think you should have gotten the WHOLE story! One more thing, I also noticed that it was not posted that when Mae was brought to the nursing home where she spent her final days, SHE pulled her feeding tube out herself and said that it was NOT to be put back in! So, what do you all have to say to that???

They felt no need to try to rally up alot of people when this should have been a family matter in the first place. I am not here to say you have to believe me or any of my previous post, but please try to see both sides of this story. Ms. Mae was terminally ill. She had requested not to be put in a nursing home and was put in hospice because it has the medical personel on hand and it is much nicer than a nursing home. Contrary to what Mr. Mullinax has posted, Ms. Mae had refused food. Ms. Gaddy could only get her to eat a little JELLO a little at a time. This situation was no where near comprable to Terri S. Beth Gaddy is a good hearted person who was turned into a monster by lemons of Mr. Mullinax. He and his family will be exposed for who they are and hopefully THEY WILL GET WHAT THEY DESERVE, TOTAL HUMILIATION. Ms. Gaddy had no further motive other than providing the best care possible. And BTW...Mr. Mullinax, I hope that since this has been brought to light, that this is taken to court and I hope that they can sue you for slander. If you are such a nice person you would have never put the family through such hell by posting all of their personal info, just for any nut case to get a hold of, I guess that just shows how bright of a person you are, not realizing the dangers of the world today.

FYI Mae's sister has had the same condition for a considerably longer time and she's still alive and living at home. Of course she wasn't starved, dehydrated and drugged for two weeks. Your "terminal" prognosis is nothing more than the flatus of rotten hyperbole.
