My guess is that they stored the guns in a standard sort of "self storage" place (someone got cheap). Which is *really* stupid, since there are any number of truly secure storage warehouses and such in the DFW area.

Such facilities are a bit more expensive than a good self-storage unit, but they have much higher security restrictions, good insurance, and armed guards on patrol. Guess Cabelas didn't see the point and tried "security through obscurity" with predictable results.

Entirely so.

There's a Beretta store in the Park Cities area of Dallas that had a $30,000 shotgun on display until relatively recently. Someone bought it.

A "Storage Site"? I think it's time to investigate the storage site. Obviously it wasn't much on security.

yeah. It would be insane for Cabela's to store them anywhere else.

The new Cabela's store.....IS RIGHT BY THE ALLIANCE AIRPORT AREAS.

THERE ARE ALL SORTS OR SECURED WAREHOUSE FACILITIES IN THAT AREA. Quite a few logistics companies. Its just up the road for the Nestle dist. center.

It is also just a couple of minutes from Texas Motor Speedway....and very close to some
standard cheap storage places.

Just up down the road from Roanoke.

The local buff gun shop here in NYC recentl had a pair of stainless .45 semi-auto pistols mounted in a case. I believe they were used in a movie. Perhaps "The Phantom"? Cost: $50,000

"unregistered weapons!"

They don't register guns in Texas. Sorry to nitpick, but it was fairly bad choice of words.

A security camera was pointed to the ground, not at the storage sheds.

HELLO!

No, it's time to investigate the idiot who thought it was a good idea to store 76 firearms in a place that is only locked by a padlock.

My guess is that they were stored in a place like this:

Uh...hey Cabela's, your store has pretty much the same facilities as the kick a-- Bass Pro Shops just up the street in Grapevine. Including the mountan (theirs has a huge bass tank at the base). And Bass Pro Shops is pretty much a skip away from DFW Airport. And really good prices. So good luck with that.

Company officials have said they expect the new store to attract more than 4 million visitors a year, making it the No. 1 tourist attraction in Texas.

The Fort Worth store will include a boat showroom, a trophy deer museum, gun library and a 40-foot mountain.

You're right; in addition to all the bonded customs warehouses and high security facilities for international commerce, there's all sorts of secured warehouse/logistics companies in the area that serve Lockheed Martin (and their subcontractors') offsite storage needs. I've a client that stores material with a company up there. A 5x5 locker in that facility costs $1000 a month, but I don't think you can get in there with anything short of an engineering platoon with a mech infantry platoon in support, and even then it'd take a while.

Someone at Cabelas got cheap.

Those are probably from the Alec Baldwin movie, "The Shadow". Wasn't a bad movie, but unless you liked the old radio show you'd never get it.

Yup, sounds like the kind of place I posted the picture of. Not unusual for such a place, but c'mon - the question should be why the heck Cabelas cheaped out and did something this stupid.

I'm guessing somebody played inside job on the heist.

I guess if we see a story on NBC 5 next week about a storage unit manager or a Cabela's employee not being heard of............the inside job thing will play out.

Can you imagine the reply from the ATF agent who got the call on this one.

"...you're missing what?! 76?! uh....please hold"

There are a couple of theft rings in the area that pick the locks on storage units, make off with the contents, and put the locks back on so that managers making the rounds won't notice anything. Either it was an inside job or one of these rings just hit the jackpot.
