LOS ANGELES May 18, 2005 Bob Denver, star of the 1960s television show "Gilligan's Island," is recuperating from quadruple heart bypass surgery, his agent said Wednesday.
Denver, 70, had the surgery recently after a checkup revealed problems, said his Los Angeles-based agent, Mike Eisenstadt. He is recuperating at his West Virginia home.
Denver portrayed the title character in the sitcom about a group of castaways stranded on a desert isle.

"Gilligan is 70? Wow, do I feel old."I'm almost 50, but I'm too young to remember the Dobbie Gillis show.
I remember Gilligan, though.

The real news in that story is that Frank Gorshin died. I hope Krebs recovers, but he lacks somethng Gorshin had in spades: talent.

Mary Ann constitutes a major kink in my psycho-sexual development.Me too. I saw a program yesterday on TV land where they picked the 10 hottest female actresses. I was shocked at how bad their choices were but the worst of all was choosing Ginger instead of Mary Ann.
I have seen several times where just about any group would choose Mary Ann by a margin of something like 3 to 1 over Ginger. Not that Ginger was ugly.

Gilligan is 70. Mick Jagger is in his 60s. Half of the Beatles are dead. Joe Namath is getting a senior citizen discount on his pantyhose. The kids on The Brady Bunch and Partridge Family are having grandchildren.
Hell yes I feel old!
But Keith Richards gives me hope.

And is the symbolism of the shot that Gilligan did them both?

I've been in many of those "Mary Ann vs. Ginger" office polls. Mary Ann always wins easily, I think because of the maintenance factor and because she seemed more real. And Veronica always beats Betty, too. Maybe we really are all alike.

Natalie Schaeffer, the actress who played Lovey Howell, was always very sensitive about her age. Turns out she was actually almost 20 years older than Jim Backus (Thurston). Probably if we had a picture of her from about 1920, she could have competed with Ginger and Mary Ann on a more even basis.

A few years ago I got into flame war with a high brow twit on FR.
He wanted to discuss the effects that the movie Lord of the Flies had on the world populace in a social, geopolitical, and an economic sense.
I told him that one could discuss Gilligan's Island with as much intellectual curiosity and it wouldn't be as boring.
My last post to him was something about Zsa Zsa Gabor and he flipped out.
lol!

I'm not surprised. All the teenaged boys dug her -- Ginger was too Hollywood -- Mary Ann seemed like she could have lived next door. I met both her and Russell Johnson (The Professor.) She seemed rather aloof. Johnson was a wonderfully warm and outgoing guy who was happy to talk at length about the show.
