I don't know about the flag ... never thought about it! I'll check out some sources.
The Turks were horrid. Even worse under Ataturk than in the last years of the Ottomans, if possible. It could be that the individual Bey of Deraa wasn't as bad as presented, but on the whole, the presentation was consistent with everything I've read.
